Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I personally know a couple cars that were wired and just ran Motec itself.

Suggestion
the 996 turbos have pnp standalone....proefi syvecs and a couple other solution which run 5k+ tuned...no pnp standalone or NA 996 that I know of...you'll need custom wiring etc....i bet you won't gain that much more HPwise over a ecu tune/flash though
Leading evidence: 'Run motec itself' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run 5k+ tuned...no pnp standalone or na 996' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. The Singer Porsches also uses the Motec standalone units as well.

is anyone using a standalone ECU for a stock 3.4 carrera (cable throttle)

I haven't come across anyone using a standalone ECU or piggyback tuner with the Porsche motor in a 996 yet...just the reflash tunes that Vivid and others sell with and/or without mechanical upgrades...
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hey there
maybe an irrelevant question but still (google isn't too helpful at this)
is anyone using a standalone ECU for a stock 3.4 carrera (cable throttle)
I was wondering is it possible to gain some extra power out of this engine, without harming it
or maybe optimising the power/torque curve, using (VEMS, Motec, Apex, AEM, Megasquirt and what other options are out there)
VEMS sort of would be more accessible also with people who can tune it proffesionally
(of course I know about the turbo and gt3 buying options, but these are out of reach for a while
)
any experiences? somehow I also don't want to boost it with superchargers or turbo kits, don't want to stress the m96 too much
300 is stock, 330-350 would be reachable?
I haven't come across anyone using a standalone ECU or piggyback tuner with the Porsche motor in a 996 yet...just the reflash tunes that Vivid and others sell with and/or without mechanical upgrades...
APR has a flash/chip combo that claims 321HP from the 3.4 on 93 octane - 25HP is a decent bump, but I don't know anything about APR.
Motec will be $5k-$6k on this side of the pond for ecu and custom tuning, not including any sensors and you do the wiring.
Bisi can tune an AEM standalone like no ones business and have used it on his turbo m96 project before.
Best and most economical route is to go through one of the existing tunes from your oem ecu.
you can do all the boltons.....ecu tune/full exhaust/ipd/TB/pulley/weight reduction etc etc.....you'll gain 30-35? hp.....i'd say that'll run you 5k-8k
no turbo kit that i know of for cable car...well if you install a kit TK will tune it for you
you can vf supercharge...similar price as full bolt ons but then again you'd want to add full exhaust...you'd gain 75-90? hp
the 996 turbos have pnp standalone....proefi syvecs and a couple other solution which run 5k+ tuned...no pnp standalone or NA 996 that I know of...you'll need custom wiring etc....i bet you won't gain that much more HPwise over a ecu tune/flash though
Motec isn't stand alone.
Honestly, stand alone will get you power. But for the cost, you're not going to gain much power. You would be better off putting that money towards a 996TT.
In the non-Porsche world, the easiest way to make cheap power is the bottle - but I've never even seen pictures of spray on a 996, and given what replacement motors cost, that doesn't really surprise me.
Motec has standalone units. Just look on their site. I personally know a couple cars that were wired and just ran Motec itself. The Singer Porsches also uses the Motec standalone units as well.
Hi, old thread but if you still considering it you can try to contact Raceboy, who is doing PnP VEMS standalone setups for many Porsche models. Maybe he can do it also for 996. The full kit for 951 (with full options + all sensors necessary for 951 was around 1200 EUR including shipping to Latvia. I plan to make around 290 - 300 whp on almost stock engine (only lot of reliability related mods are made + exhaust) on my 951.
I have seen kits for 964 and 944 S2 engines that are both na and he was seeing good power gains (the same or ever grater power gains that you want to achieve he got from 3l 4 cil 944 S2 engine), but those engines have 10 - 15 years older oem ecus, thus the gains for 996 might not be so good.
APR is very reputable in the VW and Audi world like Alpine003 mentioned...their track GTi's are beastly and they even work with some dealerships so you can get your car chipped without voiding any warranties which is a pretty big deal ...at least for those brands I dont know of their Porscha abilities
