Suggestion

The facelifted car and the improvements that go with it are nice but a lot of guys set their standard too high and end up with a M3 b/c they can't swing the 911 they want.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking to get into a 996 Cab - been focusing on 2001 C2/C4 cab [Yellow, White, Black, Red] around the mid 40's. A friend of mine said that I'd be a lot better going with a 2002 with the new engine/looks and said they're about mid to upper 50's for a Cab. What would you recommend? And what should I be looking out for whilst searching?

POST 2Original post

I would definately buy a 2002. Bigger motor and other nice enhancements. I did this myself in Jan 05.

POST 4Original post

No, get the '01. You don't want the better looking headlights, less susceptible to RMS leaks, or improved oil pickup. And what would you do with the 20 extra HP anyway? And a glovebox? Geez.

POST 6Original post

I have an 02 C4 Cab and already put in a few mods (B&M SSK, MO30 Suspension, rockers and installing Fabspeed exhaust this week). I have not had the chance to drive an 01, but definitely hear there is a big difference, especially with the engine. Also, on an 02 you may have a little factory warranty left which may be a benefit.

POST 7Original post

No doubut - 02 if you can stretch to the extra $$$. don't forget it also has a the glass window, which won't get scratched. The performance of the '02 is also noticeably better. I think it will hold it's value much better too.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The more I think about it, the more inclined I am to get the 02 996. Time to search a good valued C4 Cab! I'll be driving it through snow (with good winter tires) in NYC, so I'd prefer it. Found seal grey one down in Magnolia, NJ - 2002 C4 Cab - ~35K miles at around 56-57K that I'll take a look at hopefully this week. If you see anything out there, let me know - especially Yellow!!! Thanks guys - this is a great list!

POST 9Original post

Just buy the newest car you can afford. The facelifted car and the improvements that go with it are nice but a lot of guys set their standard too high and end up with a M3 b/c they can't swing the 911 they want. I have a 2001 and love it. BTW all 911 are susceptible to RMS. P.S. If you are going to put more money into this, put it in a warranty. It maybe better to get a pre '02 car with a 100000 mile warranty than a 2002 without. Either way, it's a great car and you'll be sorry you didn't do it sooner.

POST 10Original post

Also keep in mind that buying a preowned 996 is a crap shoot. You might get lucky and buy one that was used by a guy who never tracked his car and never abused it on the street. Or you may buy one that was used primarily as a track car. I remember a few months ago, looking at a used 2004 996 with around 900 miles on the odometer. The car had virtually no options and the dealer was asking $67K. The story the salesman gave me was the car was initially bought by a guy for his wife, and she didn't like the manual tranny. Well, the guy's wife must have spent a lot of time at the track because the tires, especially the rears, had substantial wear. Although the car was detailed and the tires were very shinny, they were obviously pushed hard on many occassions. So, bottom line is that I look for a car which I think has the best chance of giving me some trouble free driving. A car which was used as a PDE car or a car that was obviously abused would not be my first choice regardless of an attractive price.

POST 11Original post

Why not consider mine.....it is in the Rennlist Classifieds and the PCA Mart...since you are not a member, you probably can't view either ad It is also on Ebay....Just listed last evening..... It is Guards Red with full Natural Brown Leather...fully optioned with hardtop, Porsche Stability Mgmt. etc.....only 21,000 miles and three years of factory warranty remaining.....the Buy Now is $59950 and the reserve is a bit less...original MSRP around $95,000 With 17" wheels and winter tires it would do fine in snow with rear eng. weight bias and PSM....The car was just serviced and detailed and is not being driven.....It is MINT Send Me a PM if you have an interest....I am near Richmond Va.

POST 12Original post

My 2 cents - 3.6ls are just as susceptible to RMS leaks as 3.4ls. I know of more 3.6ls that have qualified for engine replacements then 3.4ls. Performance is the same - the 3.6l feels faster because there's more torque. MY02s and MY03s surge around 3500 rpms when the variocam plus kicks in (this has been worked out in the MY04s). The 3.4l is much more linear. The headlights are subjective, many including myself prefer the earlier style on a narrowbody. If your going for a cab, the glass window is a big plus on the 3.6l, as is the stiffer chassis.
