Instead of doing Pikes Peak next, we had to change our plans and headed up to Dinosaur CO, in rain and dark skies.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Right now in Los Angeles.
Drove from Chicago to experience the legendary Southern California roads.
1) Got 27 to 29 MPG. Zipping along at 75 to 80. At times MUCH faster.
2) The car is a conversation starter at nearly every fuel or meal stop.
Have any of you also taken ludicrously long road trips?
Does 1891 miles count From Cape Cod to N TX?
In a broke-azz 1985 5 speed 928 with no right rear window, no shifter ball cup, and a screaming wheel bearing?
Indeed. Did this trip last Oct:
I, too, was amazed at the efficiency of the 996 on the open highway.
And, outside of California, everyone was curious and enthusiastic about the car. Around here it's pretty much invisible.
I wouldn't say ludicrously long, but I bought my car in Illinois (Libertyville) and drove it home to Long Island (about 900 - 1000 mi.) two days later. It was a great way to "learn" the car and get accustomed to it's handling characteristics at "highway speeds"...
My lady and I are currently on our road trip across the country. Picked the car up a week ago down in TN, drove up to NYC to pick the lady up, then Maine, VT and NH into the Adirondacks (some fantastic roads up there, wow).
We continued down through Ohio (State Route 26 through Wayne Ntl Forest is a dream) into St. Louis. This is where we are today, one week later.
We'll be off to KC and OKC today, then NM into Colorado, Utah through Nevada to Southern Cali. We've got another 2 weeks of fantastic driving ahead of us.
Aside from a rattle here and there and some thirsty oil consumption the car is a dream. Silver '99 C2 with red leather, sport suspension and a few things.
We'll get to about 4.5k miles in all, once we arrive.
Tons of them in college, but here are some notables:
NYC - Nashville - Dallas - Albuquerque - Vegas - LA (STi)
Philly - ATL - Tampa - Miami - Key West (STi)
San Diego - Vegas - Denver - Kansas City - Indianapolis - DC (STi)
MI - Lincoln - SLC (WS6)
SLC - Billings - Fargo - Mid Ohio - Atlantic City (WS6)
Atlantic City - MI: straight shot & beat my dad who flew (WS6)
Miami - northern MI: straight shot (STi)
Dallas - St. Louis - Chicago - MI (Viper ACR)
MI - San Antonio - MI: over a weekend (H1)
MI to Vegas - San Diego: hit a blizzrd in CO (Viper ACR)
MI - Pittsburgh - NYC (Murcielago)
NYC to northern MI: straight shot (Murcielago)
Porsche Parade, 2005 Hershey PA. from northern WA state, 2800 mi in 4 days, then return trip. My 2003 C4S never skipped a beat and was a joy to drive, even when we lost an hour every day due to time change.
Just drove 3500 miles last week with my 1999 C2 coupe. Went from Phoenix to Detroit passing through Austin Texas for fun. Car never skipped a beat and it was such a joy to open it up on the empty highways!
^That's^ EPIC!

^That^ too !!!~
It is epic. And what a joy to drive every day. Even our necks are getting used now to the serious workout.
Btw. the website scenicbyways.info is a treasure of information about great driving roads. We found tons of little hilly twisties along the path. America is more than just straight highways! Even in the flat midwest.
We drove another fantastic one last evening in the Ozarks, through Mark Twain forest.
I highly recommend that site. My co-driver (wife) is doing a fantastic job finding the best ones every day.
These cars are perfect for road trips. I love taking mine over to Naples or Ft Myers for lunch - it's not a crazy long trip, but it gets the cobwebs off my brain.
I found the 996 C4S that I wanted in San Bernardino, CA. I flew out to CA and bought it, then drove it to my home, which was in Fort Wayne, IN at the time. That was a trip of about 2,150 miles. It was a great way to get to know the car!
Bought my 996 in Atlanta and drove it home to the Chicago area.
Taking off tomorrow for a trip starting just west of Chicago and up though Galena and Dubuque and on into Iowa. It's a business trip but I'll be driving all over eastern Iowa.
I love road tripping with a Porsche...
This post thread makes me smile... How many import exotics that have the years on them that our cars have really handle the distance of some of the trips you guys have taken? I know everyone talks about about the weak points of the M96 but let's be real its a darn good engine even when compared to the other 911 series (specifically the air cooled)... keep up on maintenance and rack up as many miles as possible enjoying every moment. My GF and I live in LA and are planning a trip up north to Redwood National Park and I can't wait.
You "Nailed It" Nailedit.
Eloquently described the essence of what great cars these are. Thank goodness 175,000 996's were made between 1999 and 2004.
Will never be "collectible". But will always be around?
Kind of like '65 Mustangs and '57 Chevy's we all encounter with amazing regularity?
Haha! we will always have parts available that is one bonus for sure. I believe they will be a classic especially once we start seeing what the longevity is going to look like with all of the new computer electronics in the 991's. I love the mechanics of the 996's... Simple sports car but enough amenities to be comfortable.
I cannot do the epic Euro tour yet that we plan for, so cannot match the mileage covered by you guys and girls but we have had some nice road tours of Southern UK, we recently went to the South coast from Home. This is about 100 miles for us. We chose back roads keeping away from the motorways and main A roads that jam up, especially around the big towns and attractions like Stonehenge. So we had good weather for May and hit the 70's (F) about 21 - 23c with bright Spring sunshine. The roads were clear and twisty. We stayed around Dorset and visited Corfe and other local beaches on the Jurassic coast. The car was great a real pleasure. and we look forward to further journeys in future. O_Sr
Yes well spotted - its not the wife if that's what your thinking!
- & that's why we brought a 996 over a Boxster S for the extra seats (about 6K More for a 911 996 over a 986 ($8.6k) ) and the mut is the reason we cannot do the long tours. She's getting old and its difficult to travel Europe with a dog these days (you need pet passports and some stops don't cater for muts etc etc. So we are happy to wait and take the dog with us on shorter trips and breaks in the UK. She loves the 996, the back is covered and protected so no hairs and no damaged leather seats ..

I'm not sure we did, since my co-driver/wife did all the navigating (and darn, did she do a fantastic job of finding empty twisty backroads). We did take the Karamagus (?) road, not the smoothest, but great driving up and down the hills.
Anyways, we're now in NM, taking a few days of rest (hot springs and all) before heading into Colorado and Utah. Over 4000 miles so far, and the beast held up A+. It does drink some oil...
To whom it may concern:
So, after a few days of rest in Santa Fe, NM, our road trip continued (not before MIL did 102mph in her first Porsche outing).
We drove up on 84 to Mesa Verde, then continued to Telluride CO. That night it snowed - yikes! summer tires - and a big storm was announced. We hailed it out of there, into a big hail storm (second one to hit the car on our trip) and I was sure the body was shot. No dents for some magical reason, but tons of rock chips on the windshield.
Instead of doing Pikes Peak next, we had to change our plans and headed up to Dinosaur CO, in rain and dark skies. From there we went down to Moab UT, Arches Natl Park, which is just magical. Headed up to Salt Lake for a quick stop over at Dave Strong's Porsche to check the steering (the front tires were almost shot, nothing else wrong with it), who's service was top notch. They have a 918 Spyder on the showroom floor, wow..
Over to the Bonneville Salt Flats (it was ankle deep in water, no high speed tests sadly), then down to Route 12 through Bryce Canyon and Mt. Zion the next day. Another magical place.
Then via Vegas to Beatty NV, into death valley the next morning (some more off-roading, paying homage to the 911's rallying past), through Mojave Desert towards Palm Springs.
Yesterday afternoon we arrived in Los Angeles.
We did about 6'700 trouble free miles total in 21 days. The car drank some oil (about a quart and a half), but held up perfectly. Now I hope to give it a well deserved wash and detail soon, as well as new shoes. Bridgestone Potenzas?
So far, the best car I've ever driven. The fastest I've ever driven (125mph), the most direct, honest driving experience. Plus, we were able to store quite a lot of luggage in it, during the whole drive, including a iron cast pan (?!).
Well, this car is it. All of it. Just perfect.
Nice work. Last year I drove from Milwaukee to Olympic National Park (stopping in Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Park on the way there), all the way down the pacific coast to LA (timed to be in Monterey for car week). Then back to Milwaukee stopping in Vegas, Moab, and Zion Nat'l Park on the way home. Covered 6,500 mi in 3 weeks, camped almost every night. I will try and post a couple pics when I get home.
I was on the road for 3 weeks. That included 3 nights in a hotel, 1 night on a boat, and the rest in a tent. It was tight fitting everything in, but if you have a C2, they have a little bit bigger frunk. Also, coupes might have a little room behind the rear seat?
