Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was surprised at how badly mine was damaged after I got it off, there was no repairing the original, I had to Frankenstein parts together.

So this has been progressively getting worse, and it's finally time to figure out how to replace/repair it.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So this has been progressively getting worse, and it's finally time to figure out how to replace/repair it. Does anyone know what the part across the back is, and/or where I go to find it? I'm not even sure what it's called to look for repair videos.
In addition to the loose fabric, the plastic shell below it is broken.
Yikes!

Isn't this largely cosmetic? Before dropping that kind of change I would think about duct tape or glue underneath and call it a day. It's not as if I ever plan to sell the car.
Here's one for a little less $$
1999-2012 Porsche 911 996 997 Convertible Roll Bar Cover 99655508304 OEM | eBay
not the right color but you could dye it or leave it as is
I did see that one, but in the 5th image down it shows the serial number, but it's a different number; 996 555
385 03
, which seems to be for the 2002 996.
Would that still replace the 996 555
083 04
?
The 996-555-385-03 may be for the rollover bar flap - it doesn’t appear in the PET diagram and doesn’t return a result in the dealer part searches. So the whole unit is still 996-555-083-0x.

he has lots of parts that he doesn't list he may have one
I went through this. I got a less than perfect cover from ebay. They are composed of several distinct parts riveted together. I took the usable parts from my old one and fitted them to the new cover after drilling out the rivets. Fairly easy job and am very happy with the results. It looked like the roll over had activated and someone tried to glue the cover back together.
This might be an approach. It's really just the fabric coming loose and the plastic piece that runs the length that broke from wind lift. I'm just not sure where/how to start on removing any of this component.
Start by putting the top in service position, not all the way closed, and pop out the plastic fasteners to remove the cover. There are a couple of screws under the two roll protection covers. Take care to save the little round access pieces as they are amazingly expensive for being just little round plastic pieces. I was surprised at how badly mine was damaged after I got it off, there was no repairing the original, I had to Frankenstein parts together. I replaced it with a black one anyway. Hopefully yours will be salvagable and can be recovered.
I am in the same situation but the plastic on mine is cracked pretty bad. Almost as if someone sat on it. Its easy to remove, i've been back there a few times trying to track down a creak. Pretty brittle. Would love some advise on where to buy one. ChatGTP is not much help.
