Full disclosure: checking items before the trip saw that fluid in the coolant tank was slightly below the min line, so didn't take Hwy 120 route and Old Priest Grade.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Awesome car for a backpacking trip in Yosemite! My daughter and I sneaked in a reservation on a great trail (I guess someone cancelled!) and 1wk later piled the backpacks in the car for the short drive from San Jose to Yosemite. Beautiful drive up Hwy 140 along the Merced River, parked at Half Dome Village (a.k.a Curry Village). All of the kids in the open air valley trolley tour waved at us and oogled. Have to admit, after blasting off up the trail I had some stress that I accidentally left some food in the car and would come back to see the trunk peeled back with bear claw marks but thank goodness no. Overall great trip with no issues, even with 85k on the clock (and all std items done by now). Full disclosure: checking items before the trip saw that fluid in the coolant tank was slightly below the min line, so didn't take Hwy 120 route and Old Priest Grade. Got home and saw the line down a little bit more. Now, to hunt of the leak before the next trip... Cheers, -Dennis

Yes!! Awesome trip in a fun car. We joked about how we were driving a Sports Utility Car and how that acronym never made it past marketing. i was never of the mind to want a convertible but since we got a bugeye sprite and have driven it through the mountains and up and down the coast I have realized what an experience it can bring. I would LOVE to feel that in Yosemite. Maybe someday I can see a cabrio in the future...

POST 5Original post

Check your reservoir cap and all the hose clamps first... Sounds like a great trip!

POST 6Original post

Awesome! these cars can be reliable, mine had 108k on the clock when I took it on my norcal to vancouver roadtrip, just a couple of check engine lights everything else went smooth, my post here: https://rennlist.com/forums/west-us-...ggestions.html

POST 7Original post

I owned my bugeye for 28 years and sold it to buy a '79 911SC. My wife and sons have never forgiven me. It was a 1960 Sprite.

Reservoir cap is right and no leakage visible around it. So tight in fact I can’t even loosen the dang thing. Maybe I’m weak after the 30miles of hiking?

Had a recent coolant spill after hot weather spirited drive; found crack in coolant tank, replaced it and good to go!

Glad you got your’s fixed! I’m in coolant monitor mode now. It’s right at the middle of the part number marking and if it moves at all, I’ll dive in. Cheers, -Dennis

Great thread! My daughter laughed at me setting up the car for various pictures and Im glad Im in similar company here. Nice job pulling us into the moment. Cheers, -Dennis

So I guess you get the whole thing why Id like to take the sprite to Yosemite! But I AM jealous of your trade-up. Id love to own an older Porsche but a) I cant afford it, and b) I only have 2 spots in the garage, which would mean giving up the sprite. The 996 and the sprite are totally different and unique experiences. Mines a 1959 with the 948 engine with 43 horsepower. Who knew going slow could be so much fun. I love it! Then I get into the 996 the next day and its like Im in a slot-car on huge track. Satisfying and fun in a totally different way. Cheers, -Dennis
