Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I just replaced water pump in 2001 996 manual. When getting smog done, tech noticed a leak while car was up on a rack. Looked like coolant. Got home and put car up, but the leak feels more like oil than coolant. I used yellow coolant which is why I'm confused...other than the fact I'm a backyard mechanic! Here is a pic of the bellows looking hose that seems to be leaking. This is under the car on drivers side facing the rear. Hose seems like it is above the variocam labeled cover on the engine. Anyone know what it is?

POST 2Original post

Its the bellows item 10, goes between the AOS and the crankcase. Item 1 is the AOS, everything in the pic is crankcase ventilation. Most likely the fluid is oil.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the reply. Is oil from there an indication of something else wrong? or can I just replace the bellows and not worry? Bill

POST 4Original post

First I would verify that it’s only oil and not a mix of coolant and oil, so-called “intermix. If you have intermix, then it’s a whole other can of worms. Even if it’s purely oil, that part may not be easy to replace. Not sure it’s possible with the engine in the car, but others on this forum have more experience on this topic. I replaced mine while the engine was out. good luck!

POST 6Original post

The Indy who serviced my car found a coolant leak at the oil heat exchanger. It was the o-rings. Not sure about your situation.
