The 996 is an absolute quality class act and the materials used cannot be found on any other car Ive ever worked on.

Suspected cause
Ultimately - the fisters are probably the best bang for the buck - but if the deletes are for a short time - go with it.

Other than changing the oil I havent spent much time under the car.

I believe that makes a 3db change a doubling of sound pressure.

I have a set I have been keeping for my son when he buys a 911....I can ask him if we can sell it....I bet he would let the air go for something like $120 pair....

A friend has a straight pipe set up that he uses for track, though he will put stock exhaust on the street, as he feels it I s too LOUD with the straight pipe.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I want to send my mufflers in to Fister, but I dont want to wait for the turn around. I know I could get a pair and send in my old ones, but mine are pristine. I picked up a pair of Fabspeed deletes on Ebay for the interim.
Anyways, I searched through some of the old threads and nobody really quantified the volume of sound and its impossible to tell from YouTube. That being said, Ill use a measure or two thats known to everyone here due too it ubiquitous moranity.
Are deletes louder than a straight piped Harley?
If not, are they louder than a long tubed Foxbody Mustang with dumps?
thanks.

Fister will send you a modded set and you send in yours once you swap them out, so no waiting. He inspects and cleans up the ones he mods, so I wouldn't worry about getting something that's not on a par with what you send. He's been doing this for a long time and is highly respected.
Another way to do it if you are still worried about the ones you have is to purchase a used set and send those to Fister to be modified. That's what I did before he had an exchange program. If you buy from someone out of your area, have them shipped directly to Fister. That will cut down on the shipping. I didn't think of it at the time and had them shipped to me and then I shipped them to Fister. I could have saved myself some money.
Fister is a great option however, my only issue with that is I think its good to reduce weight hanging off the rear particularly if you track. One of the reasons for my custom exhaust was definitely sound but also weight reduction.
Loudness should be defined as decibels per meter.
Double the loudness (decibels) is 10 more dbA
Ive read Gundo/Fister mod can be a loud as 103dbA from 2 meters behind the car at high revs. Thats quite loud. If you take the mufflers off completely, Im sure its much louder, probably at least 50% louder or even twice as loud.
I difference of 10db is ten fold increase. I believe that makes a 3db change a doubling of sound pressure. So if the Fister mod is 103dbA, and no mufflers was twice as loud, it would make it 106dbA.
I had previously spoken with Darrin and he suggested I send mine in due to the condition. They are absolutely flawless. Im not a persnickety person, I was fortunate enough to find this car in this condition and I guess its my turn to try and keep it that way. That being said, I could buy another set and send those in, but for what I paid for the Fabspeed pipes I guess I get two options for sound. I was just wondering how loud they are, and Ill find that out tonight. 😉
A friend has a straight pipe set up that he uses for track, though he will put stock exhaust on the street, as he feels it I s too LOUD with the straight pipe. Compared to Mine with 200-cell cats and PSE, which I've heard is similar to Fister mod exhaust, it sounds more like cup cars.
How loud? Loud. Cup car-esque.
Ultimately it's subjective but the Muffler Bypass is a very aggressive option that I'll always give full disclosure on. Personally, I think they sound glorious under load but definitely more of a weekend warrior/track ready set-up.
Short answer - no. Not as loud as a straight piped HD - not by a long shot.
I DD'd my 997 with deletes for more than a year. Loud? Yes. (Keep in mind it was a cab as well - so even louder). Talk on the phone? Yes - but not the easiest. Listen to the radio? Yes - but it could never be louder than the car. Drone? Yup - but really at lower revs on the highway. To me - it sounded AWESOME. I went from stock to Fister to deletes and eventually back to Fisters to sell the car.
Ultimately - the fisters are probably the best bang for the buck - but if the deletes are for a short time - go with it. Have some fun. It's not crazy.
Right now I run catless X-pipe with Fabspeed headers and Maxflo's in my track car... I just like the sound of it - even if its a bit quiet.
I put to a set of Fisters on my car and it sounds good, I put a set of Fabspeed on the boy car and they are extremely loud, finally got the 3 baffles in the bypass pipe and now you can have a conversation. Loud as a Harley hmmm I have a 152 h.p. Bagger with 2 into 1 and the straight bypass was louder.
I was talking about double the perceived loudness, which is 10db. You are talking about energetic intensity. I assume you care most about perceived loudness, not how much energy the sound waves can carry.
My 99 Cab has Fabspeed headers, Xpipe 200 cell, and by-pass pipes that were too loud to drive even gingerly without drawing attention. I installed the Car Chemistry 3 disc inserts (baffles) into the by-pass pipes that they say will knock off about 10db and it is driveable now.
Well folks, I got my answer. Its definately not as loud as a straight piped Harley nor is it as loud as a Foxbody Mustang with long tubes and dumps. For me, the jury is still out on whether Im going to keep them or go with Fisters, but Ill make a few initial observations.
Idle definately sounds great. Cold start up is impressive and sounds good. Warm idle is a bit more subdued but is still great. I did set off a car alarm backing out of a parking space, so the volume of sound is a bit much. I was able to have a conversation on the phone using a Bluetooth earpiece with the windows open. I will say that I wish the volume of sound with the windows closed would be what it was with them open, if that makes sense. I noticed pronounced burble decelerating with the car in gear, which is awesome. I was only able to get on it a few times and the jury is still out on the sound. I will say that accelerating at low revs kinda had a cheap sound to it, kinda like a beater that lost its muffler, a little disappointed in that. It absolutely was a bit shocking, so I will reserve final judgement until after a nice long drive.
Lastly, for now, I want to make a comment on the stock exhaust configuration. Im blown away that the whole process of removing the stock mufflers and installing the Fabspeed deletes took, at most, 30 minutes. Other than changing the oil I havent spent much time under the car. While I do have a low mile example that might have made this job ideal, the quality of the design and parts in the stock exhaust is unlike ANYTHING Ive ever worked on. Anybody that complains as to the build quality of these cars has never worked on an American or even Japanese car, or just doesnt have a clue what they are talking about. Not once did I have to utter an expletive or break a sweat. Try that on an 18 year old Corvette. The 996 is an absolute quality class act and the materials used cannot be found on any other car Ive ever worked on. These are truly great cars.
Yea I agree they do not help make power, but I could not tell any loss by seat of the pants.
I would do the math like this, removing the restrictive mufflers and installing by-pass pipes adds 10hp
Installing the baffles in the by-pass pipes looses 13hp
The 40lb weight difference is equivalent to adding 4hp
Net gain 1hp...lol
No I don't have any dyno test to back any of that up, just my opinion..
I bought a set of Ebay by-pass pipes for $140 last year, the sound is incredible, I have a soft top and above 3k you really can't hear yourself think. Under that, and around town its manageable but theres still quite a lot of noise that gets into the cabin. that being said, I've had it a year and wouldn't go back to stock
the cracks, bubbles, and pops are music to my ears with the top down.
