So, I have removed and discarded it all and am starting with a fresh (used) set of carpets and interior.

I also used spray lysol solution and/or 409 to clean the metal and wires, and pulled all the drain plugs and rinsed down the interior.

At first I thought it was just wiring that had been chewed, but once I started digging into it to replace the harness, I realized that the carpets, backing and sound absorbing padding in the car were badly damaged.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can you share any good tips for removing remnants of rodent waste and smells from a car?
I picked up a car that had much worse rodent damage than originally suspected.
At first I thought it was just wiring that had been chewed, but once I started digging into it to replace the harness, I realized that the carpets, backing and sound absorbing padding in the car were badly damaged. So, I have removed and discarded it all and am starting with a fresh (used) set of carpets and interior.
At the moment, I have the interior stripped to the painted metal and hope to soon begin the process of replacing all of the carpets/trim.
Despite removing the interior, there is still some residue from the nests, and a fairly strong smell of rodent waste.
What I need now are tips for cleaning the remaining residue and eliminating the smell (hopefully be removing the source) before installing my new to me carpets.
Any tips from your hard won experience?
In the absence of any better ideas, my thoughts were to start with a bleach/water solution, some rags and small bristle brushes to go after the worst messes (bottoms of the B pillar area, for example) and give the entire inside of the shell a wipe down with that same bleach solution.
Would this be enough to clean it and get rid of the smell?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can share.
I would get every part that has any stain out of the car permanently. Make sure you wash and wipe every part of the metal surfaces with some cleaners.
I would go to a janitor supply store and get some odor chemicals, and I think there is some ionization chemicals and even machines that are used
I have a persistent problem with mice in my truck which sits outdoors all the time. I clean with Simple Green or Fantastik, both of which have a pretty noticeable odor of their own. I don't think the mice like that odor much either because I have had fewer problems since using these to scrub down the infested areas.
Quick follow up - I think I've got this sorted.
The shell is down to paineted metal inside, so I am not dealing with carpets.
The CDC recommends a dilute bleach solution, in a 10:1 ratio. Perhaps overdoing it I made up a mixture of 5:1 water to 10.25% bleach (the stronger pool chlorine, not the store stuff). I figured a little more bleach wouldn't hurt.
Working in small sections, with nitrile gloves on, I made sure any loose solids were removed, then I used a spray bottle, stiff bristle brushes and rags (old t-shirts) to clean the surface. Once it looked clean, I did one more pass with the bleach solution and a clean rag. I did half the car at a shot (driver side, then passenger side).
At this point, the interior carpets and paddings are discarded, the mess on the bare painted metal is gone, the discoloration caused by the rodent mess is gone, and the nasty rodent mess smell is gone (or at last overwhelmed by the smell of bleach).
I'm going to let it air out a bit and then check it out 24 hours. If all signs are still gone, I'm going to call it a day. If not, I'll move to plan B (simple green, etc.)
So far, so good.
Pet stores carry enzymatic cleaners to help digest the proteins left behind in animal urine. Otherwise, it just continues to stink forever. Alternate treatments of this stuff with bleach for a couple of days and you should nuke the last of the funk out of that car.
I picked up a 58K 996 (ims bearing already done, new clutch and RMS) at a very low price, but it had a mouse nest by the rear speaker. There wasn't an odor, but decided to strip the interior to make sure the mice weren't in other areas of the car. I also used spray lysol solution and/or 409 to clean the metal and wires, and pulled all the drain plugs and rinsed down the interior. I spray painted all areas where the mice were, and re-wrapped the wiring harness with Tesa harness tape. The most difficult job was taking all the old tape off the wires. While I was at it I took the HVAC box out and took it apart and cleaned it, although there was no mouse sign in it. I removed the felt from the cowl, and replaced it with 1/2 inch dynaliner. I also took off the fender liners and belly pans to make sure the mice weren't their too (they weren't). It was a triple black car, but since I'm replacing the carpet, I'm thinking of switching to gray carpets and put in some gray Corbeau seats. Good luck.
Just to close the loop, I cleaned with the bleach and watersolution, let it dry, then used Nature's Miracle on the areas that saw the worst mess. It is odor free now.
