For these reasons a Porsche 996 sounded like it might fit the bill quite nicely to replace the NA Miata as a new fun car.

Inquired into a C4S at a dealer in Quebec at a reasonable price but on the advice of members on the RL Canada sub-forum, turned around and ran from it as fast as I could.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I seem to get away with a lot of warnings, still not exactly sure how that plays out every time but I'll just keep playing it the same way every time I get pulled over for a chit-chat.
Ive finally reached the (very positive) end of what has to be the most frustrating car search Ive ever experienced. Let me start by saying thanks to the mmebers on this forum, anything Im into, I seek out the user forums, theyre without fail a gold mine of useful information. This forum has been no exception.
TLDR version: I was looking for a Porsche 996, changed my mind from mk1 to mk2, couldnt find a car in Vancouver, bought one on the other side of the country.
Long Version:
It all started with reading about the unloved and now bargain basement priced Porsche 996, being Scottish in heritage and pragmatic by nature, spending a lot of money on toys is anathema to me. For these reasons a Porsche 996 sounded like it might fit the bill quite nicely to replace the NA Miata as a new fun car. So the search began in November 2015, initially I was thinking of the bargain basement cheapest option car. The only non-negotiables were that it be a manual coupe, tip/cabs just dont float my boat. There was 1 car that was on Vancouver CL and looked OK (black/tan/BBS wheels w. IMS/RMS done, reasonable km, and asking $20,800) but it was early in the search and I wasnt fully committed yet. It sold but no problem hey, another car will come along..so I waited..and lookedand waited .and lookednothing. Expand search a bit, a few cars out there but theyre in Ontario or Quebec.
In 4 months precisely 1 other Pcar hit Vancouver CL in the low end bracket (a 99 stripper base model that needed about $5K in work immediately).
Expand the search some more, look in the US but the exchange rate right now makes it pretty much a non-starter to pull a car out of the US, too bad, theres way more selection down there (I was kinda eye-balling the C4S in Medford that Groovezilla bought).
In the ensuing period, I spent a lot of time lurking on here and reading and researching. That led me to the conclusion that I wanted to get something a little better, I cant stand cheap interiors and a base 99 is going to bring that (if interior quality wasnt an issue, I might be posting up in the Corvette forums right now about my new $27,000 C6). I decided to look at a C4S, I like the AWD option (I live in snow country and may just DD this thing). Inquired into a C4S at a dealer in Quebec at a reasonable price but on the advice of members on the RL Canada sub-forum, turned around and ran from it as fast as I could. Pinged owners all over the country but could never get close enough in price/condition to take the plunge. Looked at another C4S that has been on Vancouver CL for ages, not bad price, had the right work done to it (but no receipts?!?) got it PPIed, needed $4K in work right away. At the same time I was looking at one at a Porsche dealer in Toronto. It was spendy but had a bunch of pretty rare options and all of the mods that I would have ended up spending money on to get done on any car I bought. It had a brand new motor and transmission within 70K, all work done at dealer, brand new Michelin rubber on all 4 corners, nothing mechanical needing attention. Its Speed Yellow, I would have preferred something a little more stealthy in its Porsche-ness (an Arctic Silver or Seal Grey) but this car is the right car in every other way. The fun side of me prevailed over the pragmatic side, and I've made the plunge.
Sooooomy new car goes on a truck this Saturday on its way out here. Will take some "in the flesh" pics when it arrives next week.
In the long run, you will be glad you didn't get black/silver/gray. The speed yellow is striking, and rare, and of course - it goes faster than the others.
Good choice, although I don't agree with your assessment of the mk1 interiors. They can be quite nice if optioned right. Or - they can be pedestrian. I don't think there's anything offered on the C4S that can't be had on the C2 cars, but if there is, it's going to be minor. However, it's quite possible that mk1 C2 buyers don't buy into the cosmetic option list like the turbo or C4S cars generally get loaded down with.
This has to be the single best looking 996 I've seen. Favourite colour, favourite body shape, and that wing (!)
I remember when it came up for sale, it was a bit too much hassle for me (transit, importing from Canada, passing emissions in CA) but goddamn I loved it.
Congrats! Another speed yellow owner.
The previous owner of this car is on rennlist as well. Very well taken care of. I bought some parts off him couple months ago
My favourite 996 is the one in my own garage, but I'm realistic about my aesthetic preferences
It's not cheating if I admire from afar, right?
Speed Yellow is just so loud, so great. I have a pair of shoes that colour, they're awesome.
I've been riding litre sportbikes around my neck of the woods for 8 years now. I average about 1 roadside performance review a year and yet have a spotless driving record (....touches wood while typing that). I seem to get away with a lot of warnings, still not exactly sure how that plays out every time but I'll just keep playing it the same way every time I get pulled over for a chit-chat. That was kind of why I was looking for something a little more stealthy then the yellow....
That is exactly my kind of thing! Living in Pemberton, the Duffy Lake Road is my go to for a spirited ride or drive. It's quite something, the sheer number of performance cars in Vancouver yet one rarely sees them on the Duffy loop.
Maybe it's for the best that some of them aren't on the Duffy, there'd probably be more cars wadded up in the ditch resulting in a lot more law enforcement presence on the road....
Let me know when and where you post up drive dates/plans
Matt
Congrats, what a great car! I looked at it and what almost had me is that it's a sunroof delete vehicle. Did they include the OEM deck lid with it as well?
The previous owner (really good guy, great enthusiast owner) has it, I've been in touch with him to get it.
Yeah, the sunroof delete was something I really liked about this one. Any car I've owned that had a sunroof I've hardly ever used it. I'd rather not have it and the weight and potential mechanical headaches and leaks. I think that opinion of them might be in the minority though.
no PM in my inbox and I couldn't send you one. I posted a detailed response on your profile messages. The owner of the car seems like a straight up guy, we just couldn't arrive at a mutually agreeable price.
Well it finally arrived at my folks house on Friday night at midnight. Pics taken with a potato cam...
Spent Saturday effing around getting the out of province inspection done and getting it registered in BC. Then a nice drive up the Sea to Sky highway home with my son. Windows down so we could listen to the sounds from the PSE, awesome!
Got a few things that need to be sorted out on it (squeak in the steering wheel, think it's rubbing on the horn ring, wheel off and a little vaseline on it should do the trick), clunk in the rear going over speed bumps (swaybar loose? End links/bushings? will go in an check it out) and it's probably due for motor mounts (the exhaust tips are a little lower than they should be but nowhere near where I've seen some sagging. All pretty basic stuff I'm happy to pick away at over the next couple of weeks.
*if the steering wheel squeaks when it is turned far left or far to the right, it is most likely related to the replacement of the turn signal and 3 other "stalks" which come as one part - there is some sort of bushing that needs to be present and sometimes it is not replaced.
look thru your service records and see if the 4 stalk part was replaced.
It happens when the wheel is turned even a small amount in either direction. It sounds like it's coming from right behind the wheel itself. I did a search here on RL and from descriptions from other threads it sounds like it's the wheel rubbing horn ring.
Glad you're getting the motor mounts done. I mentioned this to Pfaff when I was looking at the car as I could see the passengers side exhaust about 1/2" lower than drivers. They told me it looked normal and didn't think there was anything wrong. Regardless, it looks like you've got yourself an amazing car and I hope you enjoy it!
Congratulations on a Beautiful car. Too bad you got the second fastest color just under Arena Red
I keed of course. Again Beautiful car and congrats on finding it.
