I like the fact that these are the wheels meant for this car and all I did was change the color and paint the calipers.

Its funny how I use my 996 as the guinea pig before I do work on my daily driver lol

I sanded them really well with 400 and used an etching primer for some strength, three coats of black gloss 3 coats of shimmer effect clear gloss and finished of with 5 coats of clear.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was going to clean my wheel well but decided it was a waste of time. These are clean enough for me. I really like the way they came out. Took me 10 hours to do two wheels and paint calipers. Gloss black base with an “effect paint” which makes them shimmer in the sun. I sanded them really well with 400 and used an etching primer for some strength, three coats of black gloss 3 coats of shimmer effect clear gloss and finished of with 5 coats of clear. Yesterday was an excellent day for this. Low humidity and plenty of sunshine. I’m hoping to have a free day soon.
everyone like pictures. I wish I took more but I was focused.
That looks good. What brand of paint did you use?
Also - you mention those are 17s. I don't have my chart handy - what style are those? Turbo twist, maybe?
Did you paint with your center cap in place? How u going to remove without wrecking the paint? Because u need to position crest correctly. 😊 That's a lot of layers of paint.....
Did you paint your on calipers too? Looks like you missed a spot around the nozzles. Why did you pop off the crests and then glue them back on? Going for the blacked embossed out look?
Black rims have been so played out. Every lazy car owner seems to have one. They all blast them with Plastidip or some other crap.
Look like you've missed a few spots with the masking tape.
Wait hold up. Did you paint the calipers as well? The first pic is a black caliper with Porsche logo and then the rest of the photos are spray painted (
I assume,
) red with no logo.
I thought we were rid of the kunts in this area when Joey stopped posting. Guess I was wrong.
I must be lazy and desperate, too.
For what it's worth, I'll very likely paint my crappy silver wheels a dark color when I find some time.
Either that, or Orange!
If people like Black wheels that their prerogative, If they don't, no sense being rude in comments.
Looks like those need a little clean up/touch up and good as new.
Be bold, only once.
Mike
And here I thought silver had been played out...I too plan on painting my PO curb rash silver rims, maybe a dark gun metal grey. But I must say, I do like a blacked out 996, they look so "stealthy"!
Or, gold to match my Carrera badge
I actually think I am going to do mine gold, a similar color to the crest. I have ocean metallic blue like the one above, I think it will look really good against that color.
I'm planning on plasti-dipping my wheels gunmetal when I have some time but I wasnt going to sand them down. Degrease them nice so the paint has a clean surface to adhere to and start shooting.
I agree the center caps may cause a problem down the road when its time to remove them but live and learn.
I want to have my calipers painted and rebuilt but i'm too chicken-**** to do it myself as i've never done it... may be time to search my shop manual (youtube) for a tutorial though LOL Still doubt i'd paint the calipers myself
Props to the OP for doing the job on their own. God knows how my attempt will turn out
Plasti-Dip shouldn't need to sand down or anything besides clean and spray. Although it can be difficult to remove if you don't do it right. I removed some for a detailing client of mine last year, the dip disolver they sell and a pressure washer made quick work of it. I am just going to have mine powder coated. Also, I was thinking of doing the brakes myself, I believe this video is of a boxster but it really doesn't seem that bad. Although every time I say that everything is frozen on and won't come off.
You Tube
Powder coating is the only way to go once you've committed to a color.
Doing the calipers right the first time is best as they look like crap when just rattle canning them on the car.
Agree, my barrels are beyond saving. I basically tried to sand them down with steel wool and the staining still wont come out, just time to get them refinished. I would love to just do the calipers again in black and get them refreshed. Might try to take them off at the end of the season and see how it goes.
Hey Man, you don't have to take a backhoe to your Porsche just because it has black wheels!!! That's going too far.
PS
: I don't get the black wheel contempt either. Dictates on style are pointless in my opinion. I've never been a fan of black wheels, but I wouldn't dream of imposing that as an absolute on anyone else. Whether or not black works is highly dependent on the individual car, sometimes I like it. I actually like the color of the OP's wheels -- which seems to be more like metallic anthracite than black.
Painting with the center caps on seems problematic though. I feel bad if that is the case because the wheel paint looks well done otherwise. I'm confused why the calipers aren't done to the same standard as the wheels, because the finish on the wheels is really very nice.
.
Don't get me wrong, with proper prep and masking you can get excellent results with a rattle can paint job. I've done it on various things in the past, but I see a lot of people just painting everything in sight and it looks tacky...
Ive seen that guys videos. Hes pretty good and inspiring at the same time.
Might have a go on the 996. Been wanting to upgrade the pistons in the calipers of my Mini also.
Its funny how I use my 996 as the guinea pig before I do work on my daily driver lol
I bet if you spray citrus soap on your barrels they will come out very clean! Not sure how much the steel wool damaged them though.
My friend showed me how awesome P21S citrus auto wash is. I used it on my 1989 240SX. You can imagine how bad they were. I dont think anyone ever cleaned them. In fact, I would bet money no one ever did!
It took several applications but they came out looking great! I think I have a pic of them. It was impressive!
in the past I would pull out my credit card and buy new wheels and tires, new spoiler you name it. Spend another $7500 on dressing up my car so I could feel like the man with my bad *** Porsche.
So with this being my 5th 911 I decided I am going to do what I can do myself. Not to be flashy and try to impress people. You dont know me! You dont what makes me happy. So why do you care if I paint my wheels if all you want to do is make light of them.
Seems we have some internet bullies. Its on thing to say in a proper or kind way its not for me but Im glad you like them. I used to be this kind of jerk until I learned and learned and learned. Today I have learned to keep walking if I dont like something. I also try to be kind to people whenever possible.
As I said my wife, kids and friends think they look great. They also know when I am done these wheels will be done perfect. I have yet to go over them. No touch ups or buffing done yet. So at least I got a couple of compliments here. I am content thus far.
I hope all you credit card superstars enjoy. Your cars as much as I don
I agree. RL could use more moderation. It doesn't seem like there is any. If someone doesn't like a topic, just don't post in that thread. If you wouldn't say something to somebody face-to-face in real life, don't post it.
There are constructive comments in this thread also -- benefit from those and ignore the rest.
I think the moderators here are non existent. I also think there should be a place for people who pay to join and a free lounge or something.
This has the makings of a great website with go subject matter but the keyboard cowboys just come here to slam.
Give them a free “lounge” and let the real enthusiast pay a few bucks a month.
Then we might see a change.
That and if the moderators participated more or maybe find someone who would.
I agree, this place rocks!!!
I'm sorry but if the OP can't handle people calling him out on a botched job, then don't post pics of your "progress". I'm sure my build thread isn't everyone's cup of tea and there's plenty I've done wrong in my process of learning but I'm open to criticism in any form.
I'm a member of a little forum called "Corner-Carvers" and God help you if you post over there with spelling or grammar errors, much less with something like "how do I get my Mustang to handle like an E36 M3".... You'd get crucified and if you turned around and got your panties in a bunch, you'd get banned. And it's a free forum lol
There's a lot of great people here. There's some that bring no tech and just want to show their cars off. Everyone is welcome, along with their points of view from what I gather.
I dunno, I think 'the real enthusiast' (whatever that is) is more likely to offer an opinion than a non-enthusiast.
Before I criticize someone, I walk a mile in their shoes. That way, if they get angry, they are a mile away and barefoot.
Im living the process. These wheels looks badass in my opinion. I suppose I could have just dropped $2000 on a set of rims stuck them in my car and think I am the man. This is my work and I am happy with it. Not to mention proud of it. Its been soo much fun.
Same goes for people who drop the engine from there car and rebuild it.
Hey man Im just painting my wheels because thats what I can afford. Dont get me wrong I have a couple credit cards in the wallet that would by me some nice new wheels. I wont do it though.
When this project is done I will have red calipers, new Michelin tires and painted to my liking wheels all for under $900.00.
Guess what?
Its all paid for too! No debt.
I didn’t find it difficult at all.
I used 400 to wet sand
Self etching primer
Rustoleum black
Duplicolor shimmer effect paint. You have to see it in person it’s very cool
Duplicolor clear coat 5 coats
I did the bolts the same way.
Looks like a different car Sure you see plenty of black wheels, matte black, gloss black but not many with this multi color metal flack. Just finishing up now. 3 coats of clear and I am done. 10 minutes between coats.
Its so easy some of the polo shirt guys on the forum could do it. Just beware you will get dirt under your fingernail. Lol
This has been a good time doing this job.
What
exactly
needs moderating in this thread? You really want moderators to start removing / forbidding opposing opinions? Turn Rennlist into a "safe space" were no feelings get ruffled?
The moderating team of Rennlist are all
unpaid
volunteers, this is far from a full time role and it's impossible for us to read every post or thread. Rennlist is a community forum, it is what you all make it to be. If anyone feels a post, thread, or member is out of line you need to report it (report post button in every post).
As far as a "paid members only" forum, there is one:

So many innuendos in your posts.
My comment was in regards to painting your center caps in place under 5 coats of clear. As long as you don't start a thread about tire shop (***) your paint job by removing center caps, I will refrain commenting to your posts.
Kudos for not painting your rotors.😁
Based on you painting over the wheel center caps, porsche lettering on calipers, your shock tower all while painting the wheels with tires still on... I can deduce that when you do the wallpaper work, you just apply it over light switches and sockets? Because perfectionism.
I don't even think the criticism has been bad but why post on a PUBLIC forum and not expect some detractors? Plus constructive criticism can lead to better results. I think the color is cool, another coat of paint and some taping would make the calipers a little better. Not everyone is going to like what you do and to expect not to receive both positive and negative criticisms on the internet of all places is a miscalculation. Other communities aren't so kind.
I’m pretty much done with this project. I just need to get some stencils or locate the ones I bought four months ago. I really do hope I have inspired some do it yourselfers to go for it. You don’t have to spend thousands to make your car look cool. Everyone has there one interpretation of cool. To me this is it. I like the fact that these are the wheels meant for this car and all I did was change the color and paint the calipers. I cannot have it all. I make the most of what I have. I used to think those little plastic demons would allow me to have it all but I learned that lesson.
So here her is the mighty Thor-
5 coats of clear the the wheels are still only semi gloss? You need to wet send it because the spray can ain't working. The left front rim is shinier than the left rear. If one can see this in a picture, I can only imagine what it looks like in person. That unicorn metal flake paint isn't my cup of tea.
If it makes you happy, then awesome. It's always nice to be able to do that in an affordable way, and have the satisfaction of doing a job yourself.
If you stopped posting pictures of your mods, you'll probably find it less stressful. Everybody has an opinion, and no matter what, there are going to be people here (and everywhere) that don't love your personal style. You give them a platform when you post your project and ask for feedback. You get exactly what you requested (feedback), even if you don't like the feedback (you feel it is critical). Save yourself some aggravation and either stop posting your mods or find a way to take the feedback constructively.
Fair enough I think thats good advice.
I learned one thing about this forum. It is not a friendly place.
Better to just move on.
Im sure this has happened a lot.
It's actually a very friendly place. There are a few grumpy and cranky old men here - once you figure out who they are, it's easy to tune them out. YMMV.
OH YOU HAVE NO IDEA what it was like a few years ago...If you think this is bad, the "rat pack" would have you crying in the corner!
The one thing I'll say is, do what makes you happy and forget about what anyone else thinks. If you can't take the good (criticism) with the bad, just don't post.
Now I have to ask, what the heck is framing your rear license plate?
