Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

When I did a 3.8 in my 99 Boxster, I used the 3.4 RoW tune, pushed to the ECU using a PIWIS I.
Leading evidence: 'Use 3.4 row tune, pushed' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend fitting new maf, primary o2, and all sensors' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

We always recommend fitting new MAF, primary o2, and all sensors that can affect tune and operation.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well today I said good bye to my beloved C4S in its stock form and begins the journey to an elective rebuild into a 3.8 Track Performer engine. She is my daily driver and my track car, so she will be missed. FSI will be doing the work.
I opted to go this route when my LN IMS was ending its service life. I decided I was going to install The Solution and then I got thinking what I really wanted, an engine with both more power and reliability and the Track Performer engine was the perfect recipe I was looking for.
I will keep this thread updated as I get updates from the good people at FSI.
I have a Stage II Track Performer, 3.8. You will love the results! Gobs of power and indistructable. Torque all the way up the RPM range.
Congratulations!
One of the best ways to enjoy a 996!
Add more power, take care of much of the expensive maintenance items all at once, and bumps your car up to the upper tier of the more desirable 996s.as far as resale value is concerned!
Congrats!
Also, sent you a PM!
My '99 C2 will likely cross paths with your C4S in August - I'm doing the exact same thing! 3.8L Track Performer (elective build).
Love the graphite wheels on the Speed Yellow!!
I hope I never "have to" but I do hope to one day bump up the power! I really do plan on keeping my 996 forever and maybe another down the road...My wife would love to have one of her own now
You are so right as my completion date is toward the end of September. Nice to see so many Elective rebuilds. For me, it just made sense as I plan on keeping the car for some time.
I made this move four years ago, following an IMS "incident".
I encourage you to really drill down on the QC involved in matching pistons to rings to sleeves. For example, try to discover if your supplier offers "regular" rings versus "custom fit" rings and, if so, ask yourself why that would be the case...
Waiting for mine to be shipped back as I write this post...It's been quite a journey - FSI Jake/Jud have been awesome! I'll do a post once I get it back and drive it some...
If FSI is doing the work, you can skip the worry.
They will use the correct parts.
I've been thinking about talking to FSI about an elective build.
But I'm a few years away before I'll be ready.
I want to do it before I retire, and that's ~4 years away.
You will be so happy with the bump to 3.8 liters!
The car has the perfect amount of power now and very linear delivery. Lots of torque at lower rpm's.
Zero fear of IMS, bore scoring, D chunking etc.....
Looking forward to your eventual review of your new ride when you get it back.
You are less than one week behind my C4S. Which went in for still running bore scoring. Mine was fast enough for me, but the extra torque will be fun besides all of the internal corrective actions taken by F6I. I can't wait for the end of Sept!
I'm jealous! Good luck with the project. Can't wait to hear your impressions once the work has been finished.
Question: Which BBS wheels are you running?
And...to those of you with a '99 3.8 conversion...what's involved? I thought the 3.4 could only be bumped to 3.6?
Mike
3.4 to 3.8 is (and I stand to be corrected by the experts actually DOING the work) the standard for the Track Performer (Stage II). The 3.6 is for the Performer (Stage I). I asked about a 4.0 upgrade and the case is too small for those bores and the other difference between the '99 and others is the cable throttle - no 'plug and play' ECU tunes with the available computer.
There is no ECU tune available from FSI for the 1999 C2 that I am aware of. The increase in power and torque comes strictly from the engine modifications. The 1999 C4 has the electronic throttle body so there may be an ECU tune available.
When I did a 3.8 in my 99 Boxster, I used the 3.4 RoW tune, pushed to the ECU using a PIWIS I. Never had an issue with it adapting. We always recommend fitting new MAF, primary o2, and all sensors that can affect tune and operation.
Any reason not to go 4.0?
I'm doing this but man, been waiting for the Nickies for almost 2 months now. I don't think i'll be getting my car done by end of July :-((
When I was discussing this with Jake last fall, he asked what I was looking for and we also discussed my budget. We both agreed the 3.8 Track Performer was the recipe for success, in my case.
