Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car I just picked up does not have the Bose system. I've heard even the Bose system isn't great. I've been spoiled by recent new cars having phenomenal sound systems from the factory. Is there a solution to improving the quality of the stock 996 stereo system? I actually like my cars to be OEM, so I'd be fine with the stock head unit but a better amp and speakers, I guess? I just put the car in storage for the Winter, so I'm scheming what to do in the Spring. So far, my list includes: - OEM red belts (bought) - Improve stereo - Swap headlights for Litronic units (with no spray nozzle)

POST 2Original post

Depend what year car you have, the 03 and 04 have the fiber optic systems and the older models are easier to mod.

POST 3Original post

There is limited space for a subwoofer unless you follow the Bose idea and use some passenger leg room or take away use of a rear seat and put it there. I was unwilling to give up passenger space, went with a double DIN modern unit with Apple Car Play, Nav, Bluetooth etc. And went with great door speakers that act as subs, but in reality only give slightly better bass than regular speakers. Sounds great but definitely missing some bass, but the sound of the engine makes up for that

POST 4Original post

Look up the threads on door subs. They are inexpensive from parts direct and sound reasonably good. Also, it's easy to replace the dash and rear speakers. If yours are original, the cones are probably about done anyway. An amp would finish it off.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, guys. I have an '02. Are there any favoured combos of head unit, amp & speakers for this car? For my e36, JL made stealth subs that replaced the rear deck speakers. Although there was obviously more room, being front engine.

POST 6Original post

You'll get better sound if you do replace the stock head unit along with newer speakers. I'm in the same boat. The 99 I just bought has a cassette player, LOL. I had a JL subwoofer and JL amp in my mini cooper, that went well with the Harman Kardon system that the car came with. The sub is thin enough to put behind the passenger seat of the 911. But even though I'll keep the stock radio for my car safe in a box inside the house, the newer head units have too many important options that allow for listening to music, such as Spotify/Pandora, Bluetooth, etc. that would make the old head unit cumbersome. I would replace the head unit and speakers if you can. You might not need a subwoofer in such a small car, but then again, I put a 13" sub in my Mini, so I shouldn't preach to the choir (I'm a basshead).

POST 7Original post

Here are some links to what I used. I have a cab, which limited my options. I didn't want to break the bank, but I'm pleased with the results. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130SPDA...4.html?tp=5684 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_136C240...0X.html?tp=105 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113XR90....html?tp=35808 http://www.parts-express.com/tang-ba...m_campaign=pla A link on how to install the subs: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...-speakers.html

POST 8Original post

Not sure of the specs yet, but the car I just bought is coming with a custom sub box that goes in the back seats. I am not planning on keeping it, so if interested I will post it up when it gets here.

POST 9Original post

I upgraded mine with a Kenwood head unit, Focal speakers, and a Focal amp. It made a huge difference.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Teekster, is that plug & play or do you can to splice wires to install an amp? edit: I checked the 6speed link and saw you had to alter the speaker housing.

POST 11Original post

My suggestion is to call Rod Birch at Car Audio Innovations. He is a great guy that knows Porsche audio very well and is a 996 driver. He has also done several home install kits with head units, amplifiers, speaker mounting, and wiring harnesses to make a plug and play installation. If you search the 996 forum on Rennlist, there are many threads where he has helped 996 folks upgrade their cars. https://cai-store.com/pages/about-us

POST 12Original post

Adding the amp probably means you have to do some splicing. Mine already had a poorly installed aftermarket radio, so I couldnt take advantage of any plug and play adapters. The double DIN adds a little bit of complexity, but none of it was too bad. You would need a double DIN adapter as well as anything necessary to redo the center column. I relocated the HVAC and added a cubby above it. This also required a new bezel for the HVAC. There are threads explaining all of this.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^ Since my car won't be a daily driver, I don't need all the fancy apps/etc that come with double din. I'll just stick with a single so that I don't have to play with the dash too much. Just want better sound.
