The biggest problem with every replica wheel set I have ever owned is the fact that some need spacers to allow for front caliper clearance, which can lead to shimmy at highway speeds...

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm new to Rennlist, but have been a Porsche fanatic for the last 15 years. Just picked up my first 996 and am looking at changing the wheels. It's a 99 with 40,000 miles with the factory 17inch twists. I found a great looking set of 19inch wheels made by a company called Modular Wheels. Has anyone ever heard of, or done business with them? I've googled them and have found some good info. Their Ebay feedback is pretty good as well. Any and all insight appreciated.

POST 2Original post

ebay also known as highline, I think............. They are cheap knockoffs imo.

POST 3Original post

I just posted about these wheels in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...65#post3917965 Yes, they are knockoffs, and yes, they are cheap....Incredibly cheap at 1/4 the cost of originals. The offsets are great, the wheels are great, and no your car doesn't blow up from replica rims... Does everyone think that factory rims on all cars these days cost $800 a piece? So when you pay $200 for knockoffs, that doesn't mean they are bad wheels. I wouldn't go racing at LeMans with knockoffs, but otherwise they are great.

POST 4Original post

They are heavy and you get what you pay for. The wheels look good from a distance but there is a clear difference. Don't kid yourself into thinking you can have BBS for $200/wheel. Fake rolex watches suck too.

POST 5Original post

Don't be a hater. These things are not that heavy and they look great. I know it sucks when you pay big bucks and in the end got less value for the money...

POST 6Original post

They are heavy, and they are FAKE multipiece wheels...they are 3 piece "look" one piece wheels...at least the ones I was looking at. So you get what you pay for....wheels are one of the most important elements of the car, as you feel them every second you are driving....so MOST people dont go woth the knock offs, as there is usually a reason they are so cheap....I would rather do what I did, find a set of facory "take-offs" at LESS than the price of knock offs, and get lighter weight, higher quality and better performance....but you have to look around....

POST 8Original post

I also purchased a set of wheels from EUROWHEELS on ebay and my friend bought from MODULAR WHEELS almost the same shape, will put some pictures when my car and rims arrives here in a couple of weeks.

POST 9Original post

Let me first say that I am just a consumer of these wheels and have nothing to do with making or selling them. So, how many pieces do you think my factory turbo twist wheels are? 3? 2? Nope -- 1! Porsche better send out a recall notice since 1 piece wheels are crap according to you! And while I fully understand the aspects of sprung and unsprung weight -- I am actually an engineer by the way, not a forum troll pretending to be one -- if unsprung weight was so critical to daily driving needs, we would not be driving on 18" rims from the factory. We would all be on 15's. As the rims get bigger they get heavier. And many people are putting on REAL expensive 19" rims that weigh as a total with tires more than their factory wheels. Are they dying? Don't think so. And, I am not just someone that "looked" at these rims. I have 2 sets of replicas from different manufactures and I haven't had any issues with balancing, fit, looks, or warping. They are TUV approved. I do get a lot of compliments on my wheels, though. And I do know people that go to the track with them. And by the way, absolutely no noticeable difference when driving between factory and these rims. That's after 2 years of hands on experience. So please don't go scaring people off of a good, inexpensive way to make a huge improvement on the looks of their car with your alarmist, unsubstantiated arguments. And now some eye candy (and yes they do fit the factory caps):

POST 10Original post

First off, I NEVER said 1 piece wheels are crap...I said FAKE 1 piece wheels are crap, no matter how good they "LOOK"....Some people are not posers who just want some bling, some want functionality to their sports car. If thats the case then these are not the wheels for them..People use them at the track because they are cheap and they dont want to ruin their nore expensive wheels. That doesnt make them BETTER than stock...and if you are comparing them to stock twists, thats the HEAVIEST wheel Porsche makes...Why spend all the money and get NO performance increase? Also why buy fake 3 piece wheels? Why buy fake anything? It amazes me when you buy a $70,000 car and put the cheapest wheels you can find on them. I posted the FACTS about the wheels, they look nice, but so does a fake Carrera GT kit on a Boxster frame until you look closely....just like someone said, why buy a real Rolex when a fake one will keep time just as good, because the quality, workmanship, etc.....Rant off.....here is some FACTORY eye candy, 19's that weigh LESS than your 18's and I spent half what you did.....

POST 11Original post

Sorry to be the one that breaks the news to you, but there are plenty of people that put form over function. Uh, do you have a fake turbo look going there, buddy? That's definitely not the front bumper lip of C4S, and how much performance did you get out of the clear markers and black paint on your wheels? Chump.

POST 12Original post

I don't even think that's a C4s! You, my friend are the ultimate poser! LMAO!!!

POST 13Original post

Actually if you look its a C4, not a C4S, I like that bumper better, but if you must know there is more function, it has the opening for the center radiatior, so cooler temps, also its lower, reducing lift, making the car more stable at high speeds....clear markers and black paint are for the aestehtics of the car, but again all factory and REAL. Nothing compared to FAKE wheels...poser....and what function do your fake wheel bolts have? oh yeah NONE. They are there to make people who dont know THINK you spent alot of money on them, when you really didnt...like fake gold chains, cubic zirconias and fake watches....you buy your wife fake gucci or prada purses? She probably would NEVER stand for it...take a hint. Idiot....

POST 14Original post

While I'd love to sit and watch the fireworks , I think the first and most important question is where's the pics of the new ride!!

POST 15Original post

Not to take sides, but as I have mention to newport, he has one of the best looking 996 IMO. Could he have achived that with Fiber Glass body kit and replica wheels...hell yes. Will the quality last and provide a better ride...definitely NO. At the end of the day, it is all about how you feel and the peace of mind you get between the real stuff and the fake. Using the analogy of the Rolex watch, the really good quality imitations are almost undetectable by the naked eyes. But everytime you wash your hands, go for a swim or jump in the hot tub(hopefully not a lone), your mind wonders if it is really waterproof. Some people just don't fancy the doubt.

POST 16Original post

Only reason I chimed in is because my rear bumper, now a True TT bumper modified to fit a narrow body was originally a fiberglass TT "Look" rear....it looked exactly the same, unless you had a real one next to it....it went on easy, was painted, and before long, it developved cracks in the paint. (????) like spiderwebs in the corners, as if the fiberglass was moving, and the paint wasnt...odd...then it began to ripple...you could begin to see the ripples in the bumper. what originally looked great, within a year looked 'fake' like a body kit on a Honda Civic....I HATED it. Then by luck I was rear ended and had the other guys insurance company replace it with a genuine TT bumper, had it modified to fit a narrow body and its an MUCH better fit, quality is better. Oh and the fiberglass bumper cracked right down the center from not a hard hit. A factory bumper would have MAYBE needed new paint. So there is a huge difference sometimes in function, but not in looks...you decide what works for you. I have found that bargain priced stuff usually is priced that way for a reason, and now I wont touch it. If I can't afford the real stuff, I'll wait. That being said there is ALOT in between the wheels mentioned here and the most expensive wheels, you can find LOTS of wheels that are a good value...you do not have to spend 5k for rims. My point was that there are tradeoffs....almost always, be aware of them and if it works for you, then go for it...its your car. Do with it what you will.....Oh and thanks for the compliments Jake...I wanted to do something unique yet very factory looking...So all factory body pieces, PSS9 suspension, and a ton of audio mods....but it all has a factory look to it. Some people may want a more custom look and would choose differnt body kits and rims, thats cool too....Thats the coolest thing about Porsche's is you can mod them in SOOOOOO many ways and each one is unique.

POST 17Original post

Not to beat a severly beaten horse here, but I had a set of 19" AMG knock-offs from "Modular Wheels" (they also go by the name Highline Wheels) on my C230 Mercedes and never had any issues. Additionally, I had a blowout and the rim stayed in perfect condition after driving one mile on the dead tire. The biggest problem with every replica wheel set I have ever owned is the fact that some need spacers to allow for front caliper clearance, which can lead to shimmy at highway speeds... somewhat annoying. They are not REAL 3-piece wheels, they just look as such. A note to the condescending - Some of us can barely afford the Porsches we have (such as myself) and love, and some don't have the coin to shell out $6000 for new rims. Of course, I'm still rolling on my 18" twists as I can't even afford knock-offs, but maybe I'm a poser too! Just my 2 pesos

POST 18Original post

You and me both, just picked up an 02 996 C2 about a month ago. The price was right due to the winter season in Toronto and I still have my Saab Viggen Conv. that I'm driving for the winter. 2 car payments is killing me, a couple of months to go and the Saab goes to my GF. Then I may have some $ to spend on upgrades. I do agree with newport...if I can;t afford the real stuff, I'll wait for deals or save up. I spent over 8g on my Saab in the past 4 years and no regrets. Check my post on " Don't want a 993 anymore" talk about us lucky ones driving a P car.

POST 19Original post

For some cars its not going to make that much of a difference....for some cars it will make more of a difference...Porsche's are very sensitive to wheels, tires (they have their own N-Spec certification), suspension, etc....if you get it wrong, its wrong...bolt pattern and offset is just the beginning....alot of replicas, not saying these are or not, are just matching bolt patterns...thats why some have totally WRONG offsets. They may fit the car, but they were no designed for it...this can do lots of things like put stress on suspensions compnents or just make it handle bad, or wear tires funny, or cause shimmy in the wheel....lots of things....people are not just saying its bad for the sake of doing it....I may have the $$$ for $6K rims, but my wife would kill me, so I looked at cheaper alternatives...used or less expensive rims. I got a set of takeoffs for VERY cheap....worked for me...again, if you like them, then do it, just know the pros and cons so you know what you may be getting youserlf into.

POST 20Original post

Wait wait wait, so the wheels on your car (beautiful by the way) are takeoffs?! Now I'm confused. Wheel Dynamics?

POST 21Original post

Takeoffs...NOT knockoffs....They TOOK them off a Porsche 997...and sold them to me. They are Porsche factory 997 19" Sport Design wheels, custom painted. Yes Wheel Dynamics sells knock offs...those look pretty good, but they do weigh more than mine...Mine are lighter than my 18" twists they replaced.

POST 22Original post

Just based on those two pics....I like the knock offs better than the flat black factory wheel.

POST 23Original post

Can you say CAST? Can you say FORGED? That is the difference. One is made by the lowest bidder in Tawain.................. I wonder which one, hmmmm. All I'm saying is it's not BBS, it's not OEM, or champion quality. There is a difference whether you want to realize it or not. Nobody gets a free ride. Stop being DOLTS>

POST 24Original post

Can you say cast is better for road than forged? Forged breaks, cast bends and can be fixed. Most street wheels are cast.

POST 25Original post

Yea...Dolts. Whatever that is? Bought a set of Cup II replicas from the Tire Rack once. Could not keep them from getting bent on pot holes. Everytime I got new tires I had to have them straightened. That is the big draw back. As for a poser, I really don't care one way or the other as long as you like it it is fine with me.

POST 26Original post

No question Forged wheels are better than cast. My Champion RG5's weigh less than 20#'s each (even the 18" x 11" rears). Additionally, forged wheels are stronger than a cast wheel of similar design. FWIW, both cast or forged wheels can bend or break. However, the stronger forged wheels will take more abuse. The only problem is price, as with most things that are better, forged cost $$$.

POST 27Original post

Be sure and talk about something you know something about. Forged is the best and why race wheels are built forged. Most street wheels are cast because people will not pay the money for forged. Porsche use to charge in 80's dollars $1,200 for a 928 forged wheel. Dare you to break a well made forged wheel. Your suspension and car will need repair also.

POST 28Original post

forged is better.......... that's why it's more expensive.......

POST 29Original post

yeah based on those pics, i like his clean wheels better than my dirty ones...they are gloss black not flat....maybe this is a better pic....

POST 30Original post

Forged versus cast and strength? Here is a nice thread to look at... 996 Cast Pistons In addition...true...forged is stronger...but then again so is a TT engine, so why didn't we all go an buy a TT? We all know the answer to that. Typically people buy forged for their lighter weight, but nowadays, that doesn't always hold true. You need to do your research on the wheel and not assume forged==light. Also, you can get many light cast wheels cheap...example at 21 lbs... Enkei NT03-M If you like the style of course. Then you decide whether an extra 2 lbs off a wheel is worth an extra $500/wheel...or is it better using that $2K towards a supercharger...or better yet...a TT . The point is that... A good cast wheel is a decent option...whether it is a knockoff or not. "You get what you pay for" only works downwards, and understand, there is always someone upwards that will give YOU the same rational. thanks, Amir

POST 31Original post

I jumped a curb in my Supra...bent up all my wheels....no suspension damage...no body damage. I had a set of 17" Racing Hart C2 3-piece forged wheels. However, I do agree that with cheap wheels, you have to be more careful. I had a friend where one of his wheels ended up with a crack around one of the lugs. thanks, Amir

POST 32Original post

i say you have a much higher prob. of having the knock-off getting knocked off ....... but you get what you pay for......
