This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Another noob question : my 996 has a rear / roof antenna. From what I understand, the radio antenna is *in* the roof and the windshield (middle trace) on the 996, and its former / stock equipment was just a decker tape + CD changer, no PSM no GPS. I found additional equipment wiring under the passenger seat and I'm almost 100% positive the first owner got his own GSM added to the car later and got this antenna added. does it look like a GSM addon antenna ? my second question is : keep or remove ? I was considering covering or replacing with a "fin" or "shark" antenna like what you find on BMW (I'm not sure how you call them in english). thoughts ? rear antenna

996 MK1 (1998). But you possibly meant "up to you" or "you do you" (not a native speaker here) ?

POST 4Original post

Yes it's up to you to do what suits your eye...I don't care for the "shark fin" look myself.

POST 5Original post

If you aren't using it and it's easy to remove, then I think it's a "no brainer" to remove it. If it's not easy to remove because a hole was drilled, and you want aesthetic opinions on what you have versus shark fin, then you should post more photos from different angles because it's pretty difficult to form any opinion from the angle you posted.

thanks a lot, I haven't tried to remove it yet, I think I can unscrew the antenna itself but the base has been probably drilled as it was added later and it's not a stock thing. If I can remove the small whip, I might just machine a PVC cap and keep it as low profile as possible, I don't think a paint job is worth it to hide the hole though some paint shops do magic. I'll post more pics after I've tried to remove the whip, I'm just back from holidays. Thanks !

I have used these before for such things: https://www.amazon.com/Piece-Flush-Mount-Black-Assortment/dp/B00PP7XU1E https://www.amazon.com/Piece-Flush-Mount-Black-Assortment/dp/B00PP7XU1E Depends on the color of the car, but a black dot should not be too disgusting....and the price certainly is right!

POST 8Original post

You can buy plastic plugs from any auto parts store, then paint to match

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks a lot for the input guys, just what I was looking for. I need to find those plugs in France. For now I've removed the whip and left the rubber (seal) base. I might just end 3D printing a resin cap on my formlabs 2 and paint it with the body color

POST 10Original post

Keep, they didn't continue it on other years. Its unique, first one I saw I thought it was aftermarket but then I watched the 98' promo video and there it was. IMO don't put anything newer on it.

Very interesting (and surprising)

POST 12Original post

It doesn’t look too bad. I’ve seen much worse looking antennas. Take a look at this YouTube video. You Tube He had a similar one removed from his 997 and shows what it took to have it done near the end of the video.

I too was surprised, I like little things like that though. It makes the car so unique and if you change it, I bet the next owner will be cursing you one day!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

surprised too about the stock antenna ! Mine really seems aftermarket, as it ends under the passenger seat, along with another antenna that might go in the front bumper (possible GPS antenna). As the custom wire harness was also connected to the horn or alarm siren, I think he had a GPS tracker added to it but I'm not sure. @Tex Squirrel, could you post the youtube link please, I don't see it in your post. [watched the promo video and saw indeed an antenna on a red 996, amazing]
