Suggestion

I think a wiser move would be to spend the money on a good pair of coil overs and lower the car 10-20mm and youll magically find the car looks how you wanted it AND you got new suspension components out of the deal to replace the 100k components on the car now.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just picked up a 1999 996. It has just over 100k on it but is amazingly clean and well cared for. I have some changes Im going to make but have some tech questions. Anyone know what wheels these are and what the offsets are? Im wanting to go to a 20 rim but want to make sure I get the fit right 99 996

POST 2Original post

They look like Sport Edition Cup 4 wheels. They are inexpensive, Chinese-made cast wheels. Congrats on the car. It looks great. As im sure you know, the 996 was designed to run a maximum wheel diameter of 18. Theres no official recommendation for a 20 wheel, and I think rubbing is a serious concern. Hopefully you can find somebody with advice in that area. You may have to roll the fenders or make other modifications.

POST 3Original post

I'd advise against that. The ride is going to be really harsh and you'll probably end up bending wheels. Plus it won't look very well-proportioned. But, to each his own!

POST 4Original post

Personally I would stick with 18s. I love the looks of the Carrera 2 wheels.

POST 5Original post

POST 6Original post

Joking aside, if you've never owned a Porsche before you need to find someone that's a Porsche guru near you and have them look the car over to tell you "it's in great shape". Not trying to be the wet-rag here, but there's a lot of gotchas to these cars and if you don't know them VERY well, you're just guessing. It does look great! As mentioned earlier, don't put any larger wheel than what the owner's manual says you can. Porsche wheel/tire engineers know they're business... Put also, welcome to the Porsche life! Drive it hard and fast and enjoy it!

POST 8Original post

This is a performance sports car not a "Donk"!

POST 9Original post

Seriously, Id have it looked over by someone who knows Porsches as mentioned earlier. Then Id address any pressing concerns, then Id drive it for a while. By adding 20s I suppose you are after a certain look. Youll find out that Porsche engineers were very meticulous in picking 18 wheels for this car, 20s will actually raise the car an inch, ride like garbage, and put undue stress in the suspension. I think a wiser move would be to spend the money on a good pair of coil overs and lower the car 10-20mm and youll magically find the car looks how you wanted it AND you got new suspension components out of the deal to replace the 100k components on the car now. Double win.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All good advise and well absorbed. The car is currently on 19 wheels and does great... I am consider 18s. I am wanting a certain look but not at the expense of perfomance. Being new to the Porsche world I dont want to make undo complications for myself. Ive just been looking for info on the rims that are currently on it and havent been able to find solid info about offset and technical data

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as having it looked over that is a unique situation. I live in Midland Texas (do some Reseach on the economy here) its not the easiest service situation, so Im doing a lot of homework

POST 12Original post

I used to live in Midland, and worked on aircooled Porsche’s when I was there. There were several good Porsche mechanics back then, but they’re likely retired now. Lubbock used to have the closest Porsche dealership back then. I bet there is someone with some knowledge there somewhere. A few months back there was a 996 roller for sale in Midland. I toyed with the idea of buying it and making a trip back to see friends who still live there and then tow it home.

POST 13Original post

Take off the wheels and see if the offset is marked on the back. Or just measure them. Offset = 25.4 * (Backspace - (Rim's Tire Width + 1) / 2) You can then come fairly close that way. When I measured an unknown BMW wheel, I came within a couple of mm of what I eventually was able to determine what they should have been. http://www.gtsparkplugs.com/Backspac...alculator.html

POST 15Original post

If you want a low wheel gap look I'd get smaller wheels and put your money into suspension. Then you'll have the certain look and the certain performance.
