With the transmission out of commission you can't drive the car and give it a proper used car check out so there's some risk the engine may also be sick or other serious problems are lurking in the car.

if on the other hand the owner wants to mail you a check for $20k and have you cash it, then send the $15k back to him you might re-consider

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I cant imagine what happened in 2-3 years and 5k miles< but im obviously hoping that its not as bad as it seems and I'm getting a good opportunity to get back into a 996 with repair work limited to the $5k range.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All
I think I might have an opportunity to purchase a 1999 996 for $5,000
Heres what it has:
25k miles
Techart Exhaust
Techart wheels
Here's the catch;
Car needs a transmission
Do you think its worth the effort?
How much do you think a new Trans (labor incl) would be?
maybe Crome is also looking to trade up..
kidding aside... what condition is the rest of the car in? If salvageable....does it have a clean title.
post pics. it may be a good candidate for some mods.
6sp trans..$3K + installed.
Is the engine ok? Only the trasmission broken, tip or manual?
There are manual transmissions on e-bay for roughly 3k usd
About 8h work and thats it. Not knowing how much the labour is in the states, I'd say that less than 5k for repairs.
A friend of mine had the car until 2 years ago and sold it with 19K miles on it
She is perfect and beautiful and loaded with Techart extras
Mechanically the car was in v-good shape when he sold it. I know that astetically the car is still flawless
I cant imagine what happened in 2-3 years and 5k miles< but im obviously hoping that its not as bad as it seems and I'm getting a good opportunity to get back into a 996 with repair work limited to the $5k range.
How much risk are you willing to accept?
With the transmission out of commission you can't drive the car and give it a proper used car check out so there's some risk the engine may also be sick or other serious problems are lurking in the car.
If you want to know what a transmission replacement costs get an estimate from the dealer. Sure it will be high but so what? You use this estimate to adjust your offer down, subtracting the estimate amount from the market value you establish for similar cars in good working order.
If you then want to put in a used transmission (yet another risk because the used transmission may prove to be also bad), and (possibly) save some money, there's nothing wrong with that. You received some mitigation for assuming the risk the rest of the car was ok in buying it without being able to properly evaluate it.
Might add if the transmission is bad what's to say the clutch isn't bad as well? Or the clutch hydraulic system? Or the flywheel? So keep those possible additional costs to a transmission replacement in mind.
Sincerely,
Macster.
The TechArt exhaust is $3500 + Wheel $3000. I think this is a no brainer... even at $10,000. Even with the tranny bad the engine should start? No smoke - no leaks - no intermix... Charge it on my Amex and ship it to me!
Based on the OP description... for ~$5000 the owner could get this car on the road. Any driveable MY99 996 would sell for at least $15,000, more if it looks/smells good, has low miles, and has extras. Something here just doesn't seem right. There are no crazy deals on IPADs or 911s... are there?
Unless you're in bed with him, I do agree that this seems too good to be true. Something has to be wrong. How long have you known "this friend"?
Post pics if you have any.
This is a good deal pending PPI. It is the tranny that is not working right not the engine. You can still fire up the engine and it should run. All other PPI checks boxes still apply.
makes ZERO sense. 3 EASY sales on ebay and the guy could have his 5K then send the rest to auction or the yard. Even on ebay someone would pay 10K for the car.
PLUS.. if a shop told him it needed a tranny and didnt have it fixed... Someone from teh shop woudl have been all over it.
Ill believe it when I see it
After thinking about this some more I have to agree.
In fact, this is not the first one of these car with a problem being offered at a firesale price. Just a few days ago one came up that had a goofy tranmission problem that would not let the engine start because the Tip thought it was in 2nd gear.
I wouldn't be surprised if this car was a scam with the 'seller' hoping someone sensing a deal of the year gets a bit ahead of the buying process and wires some money and the money disappears and the buyer is left holding the bag.
Sincerely,
Macster.
stranger things have happened.....
as long as you have seen the car and met the owner in person....I think its a real winner...
if on the other hand the owner wants to mail you a check for $20k and have you cash it, then send the $15k back to him you might re-consider
Hey, I think we are looking at the same car. Is the PO a prince in exile in Nigera? I'm afraid you are too late- I already sent him a $5K deposit check...
Seriously, if it is legit, then sounds like it is a good deal if everything is there and there are no other major issues.
Wow, a PPI on a $5k 996? How cheap would it have to be for you guys to just take your chances, ignoring, of course, the idea that it's already worth more than five grand as it sits...
LOL.. yeah it started out needing a motor... But then the guys buddy blew up his tranny. And so we have bad tranny and motor now......
I dunno.. I think if I had the chance. I think I would do a compression test. If that looked good I would step out on the limb. If the car was in front of me and I had a title in hand.
Yes peopel do things and sometimes you can never figure out why. This isnt an impossible deal to happen. But it is very rare. Call the state po po and have them run the vin also
Did you pay $5k for the Porsche? I'd say it's worth the investment now that we determined it wasn't a scam. Nice going, can't wait to hear about your progress on this project.
Most of the labor of the IMS bearing is taking the transmission and clutch off, so I would ABSOLUTELY do the retrofit while you are fixing the rest of that stuff.
Looks too good to part out; I'd say you got a great deal.
Check Vertex auto... they offer some rebuilt transmissions for a good price and I have heard they have a good reputation. They are east coast as well so the shipping shouldn't be too bad.
Great find by the way! Congratulations!
I paid over my 5k bid because the engine was running. i mistaken thought it had techart wheel but its just the exhaust. Its not a factory aero but it does have all OEM aero parts installed.
She a looker from far but def needs some TLC on the exterior.
there rust on the drivers door jam
rims are loaded with curb rash
multiple dings and small scratches throughout
My Mechanic is looking at it today so i'll hopefully have a list of "To Do's" by tonight.
Fingers crossed on the clutch, flywheel and tranny
Back on the road today!! Not bad since she hasnt been driven since 2007 - lol
I do need help with the radio code - none in the car and I need to get the radio reactivated - Any advice. I think I read here that I can get it done at the dealer
$4k later:
New Clutch Disc
Throw out bearing
Pressure plate
Flywheel
LN IMS retro kit
RMS
and Mobil 1 service
All in, I'm still under 15k which Im quite happy about
She is all around in great shape. She has some dings, dents and scratches. Mostly on the drivers side but I'm hoping a good paintless dent remover person can get them out and then I'll detail; the paint as best I can to rid her of the scratches
Divorce
Boy do they get ugly, but they offer up great opportunities
Trust me. Been there done that already. At least I was on the good end of one this time.
Not suremifmthemairbags ever were deployed. The steering wheel was changed but previous owner states that was only done to upgrade to a 3 spoke wheel.
Carfax is clean and car shows no sign of accidents
