My car has the lock mechanism, I've heard they sometimes fail (but I think they are easy to replace).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Another question, my M96 from 1998 had a standard cap that I upgraded with the alu look one. It came with a set of 2 retainers, I used the most flexible / rubber one. I think my car didn't have that retainer formerly, I couldn't spot any hole for the push-in plastic rivet, so I drilled one at the expected location. Now the question is where to suspend the retainer. My fuel door doesn't that bottom welded S shaped clip like I've seen on other pictures. Here's what's mine look like. I though that maybe the 2 O' clock snap in location could be for such a clip but I couldn't find any part # referenced to this place. I actually don't know what's the use of it. Aside changing the door, any possible hack for a fuel cap "hanger" on such a door ? Thank you

POST 2Original post

My 2005 has a "hook" at the 4 o'clock position which I never use. The cap tether(replacement part) has a shape that gracefully allows it to hang down over the fender roll into the wheel well area. Next time I'll try using the hook. so I can't help you...

POST 3Original post

I found the tether to be a hassle and removed it. I just put the gas cap on the bottom of the windshield. Easy peasy.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks guys, I'll see how it goes with the tether. I might 3D print a hook or something if I keep it

POST 5Original post

The Fuchs valve stem support would work. https://www.aasesales.com/products/d3e-b52-6i-104263

very cool hack thanks !

POST 7Original post

Interesting that it doesn't have a hook, too bad its painted. You could always find an updated flap? Dont think they are expensive - nor are the stickers. I like the hook its very cleaver.

POST 8Original post

My March 98 build doesn't have anything to hang it on either. The tether is long enough to hang it over the filler door, so that's what I do. Not to hijack the thread, but my fender has a hole next to the filler door latch where the locking mechanism should be. Did some of the cars come without a filler door locking mechanism?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15169806

nice, I'll see how it goes to hang it this way, thanks a lot. My car has the lock mechanism, I've heard they sometimes fail (but I think they are easy to replace). Also, it's easy to crush the lock pin (car locked with pin out, close the filler door, bam). Mine had the lock latch (in which the pin goes) missing, I replaced it for a couple of .
