I was driving around town the other day, when a car pulled up beside me. The driver asked me "Where do you take your car to get it worked on? I have a Porsche at home that I need some work on and I was wondering where to take it." "Sorry", I said..."I do all the work on my car"...
It sure is a great feeling to be able to say that, and know that it means more than just refilling the coolant tank or changing the oil.
Well done ! I also work on my own car!! I think the 996 suits this as you can keep it on the road for a lot less than always taking it to the garage/shop!
Make that a hat-trick! The two times I've taking my car to the local dealer for an inspection, something un-related to the inspection "has broken" and had to be fixed...the second one cost me $1100.00 - it's questionable whether they caused it or not, but it's a good example of why I prefer to do most if not all the work my self. While I could technically "afford" to have the work done at a shop, I just prefer to do it my self. I know exactly what was done, how it was done, and exactly what it cost in time and $. If there's a screw up I own it
It's insane what a dealer bill can get to for not so Much work , I've got a bill in the history with my car , full service ( oil and filters plus wiper blades and two tyres £1600!! And it's an old bill like about 8 years ago 😬😬
Depends on the situation. Since I've recently moved from a house to an apartment I can only manage taking on certain tasks in the garage.
Had the IMS/AOS/etc. done by Kraftwerks and am very happy with all his help. Great guy.
You have our curiosity... How far do you take your mechanical skills? What can you do beyond normal maintenance?
If you can do full reconstruction of the M96, then please let us know... we'll be bring you lots of work! haha
My thought is if you never need advice or an opinion beyond what you can find online then doing it yourself is fine, but if you need good timely advice and can find a shop or dealer that is willing to give you their time and guidance you can build a lasting relationship and understand that you are getting much more value from that relationship than just saving a couple bucks. I have always enjoyed the relationships and trust building that it takes to make a customer a friend.
Called local dealer to inquire about a 30k service as I recently bought the car with sparse history and wanted to get regular service on record. Told them that I did not need the oil/filter changed or the cabin filter...just the spark plugs, air filter and a slew of checks.
THey called me back...$2200 for the full list of 30k service interval, take $500 off since I had already done oil and cabin airfilter. $500 for an oil change??? On $110 (max) worth of parts retail??? $1700 for air filter, plugs, and 25 odd checks.... Local indie wants $330.

while i admire you DIY mechanics.again its not a shock that porsche dealers charge alot ,some people can afford it,and if it brings them peace of mind having the dealer do the work then so be it. And sorry even the dealer doesnt charge $500 for an oil change.

Though I'm getting there in life where I don't have time for Kids things anymore, besides they are all 30+.
I'm looking forward to day when we work on a car for my Grandson.

I use PowerTech in Rockaway, NJ. They are great. All they do are Porsches and they even have a race team. Mike Daino knows these cars in and out. I have no affiliation other than getting my car serviced there and I highly recommend them.
Sorry, Randy, yes they do...at least my local one does. I don't have it on paper or email so I can't post it, but I do have it in a voicemail (that I could post, for what it is worth, pretty sure it is still on my work voicemail). They offered me $500 off the $2200 total for the 30k service interval since I had already done the oil change and cabin filter....ergo, that is what they charge (or more) for these services stand alone.
I have an excellent indie here who shall remain unnamed lol. Factory Porsche and Mercedes training, which works for me X3 Pcars and 5 MBZ. Time on his rack (for most) is like winning lottery tickets here in TN. Have been with him 8+ yrs, excellent relationship. If it weren't for him, I'd probably sell 'em all..
