Someone installed a black fixed wing over the automatic spoiler and therefore the automatic spoiler cant move.

I removed the factory housing, cleaned out 20-year-old hardened grease, installed the new Teflon guides and gears with synthetic lube, and reassembled it.

I bench-tested the mechanism through hundreds of full cycles to check for gear wear before bolting it back into my car, and it's been rock solid under daily use since.

Tested all the wires on the trunk harness and even made my own legend with my own diagram with photos to simplify and understand it better.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I finally fixed my failing 996 rear spoiler drive after $750 down the drainheres what was actually broken and how I ended up solving it.
My original rear spoiler drive stopped working, so I picked up a used motor/gearbox assembly on eBay for $750. Less than a month later, it failed again.
I tore the unit down to see what was actually going on. Inside the gearbox, the drive gears were stripped clean. The root cause was the cable guidesthe original plastic gets dry-rotted, cracks, and binds up, which forces the tiny plastic gears to sheer off under load.
Since Porsche doesn't sell individual internal repair parts for these assemblies (and buying another used unit felt like playing roulette), I decided to draw up and machine proper replacement parts for my own car:
PTFE (Teflon) Cable Guides:
Machined these out of Teflon to replace the brittle stock plastic. The friction reduction is huge, and they won't dry-rot in engine bay heat.
Carbon-Reinforced Slider Gears:
Standard 3D printing couldn't hold the flat tolerances required and degraded in engine heat, so I had these precision CNC-machined out of a carbon-composite polymer rated for 300F+.
If you're mechanically inclined, tearing down the motor assembly isn't too bad. I removed the factory housing, cleaned out 20-year-old hardened grease, installed the new Teflon guides and gears with synthetic lube, and reassembled it.
Test your microswitches while you're in there! There are two limit switchesa simple continuity check with a multimeter confirms if theyre still good or if they were the cause of a previous failure.
The spoiler mechanism is ridiculously smooth and noticeably faster now with the lower guide friction. I bench-tested the mechanism through hundreds of full cycles to check for gear wear before bolting it back into my car, and it's been rock solid under daily use since.
Here are a few photos of the teardown and the internals. Happy to answer any questions about the teardown process if anyone else is fighting a dead spoiler motor. Because I had an Aerospace machine company make these, I had a minimum order. I also had to have the Teflon tube/Guides made as no off the shelf size fit properly. I have assembled some kits if anyone is interested.
Fantastic work and I would be interested in a kit if you've made a few extra ones. Will send you a PM. I fixed this about a year or 2 ago and had a similar failure with the housing failing and even though it has lasted for a while, I've been getting a random spoiler error on the dash, despite the spoiler moving up and down manually and at speed. It's probably starting to fail again. Nice job figuring this out!
Thanks for making to effort to produce these parts! I am awaiting delivery of a 04 C4S I just purchased and the spoiler is one of my issues. Someone installed a black fixed wing over the automatic spoiler and therefore the automatic spoiler cant move. I assume the automatic spoiler was defeated somehow. Additionally, the car has sat unused for several years. Maybe the automatic spoiler stopped working and the fixed wing was their solution. Having said all that, my assumption is that I will need your fine parts. Is there a troubleshooting flowchart for repairing the automatic spoiler? If I get lucky, maybe Ill find its just unplugged somewhere.
I'm so glad I stopped by this forum today. I was JUST about to order the guides from a site that 3D prints them but I've been hesitant bc they are still plastic. They state that the Nylon they use "provides superior strength and resilience compared to the original injection-molded part"
But I'm not that well versed in 3D printing or what filaments are best for which applications.
I've also done extensive research on the active spoiler and how the micro switches work while trying to diagnose my issue. I got very familiar with the wiring diagram and the harness itself. Tested all the wires on the trunk harness and even made my own legend with my own diagram with photos to simplify and understand it better. I was able to determine one microswitch had gone bad and while I was able to get it work with parts from one I had laying around, it ended up failing and taking out the other one too. The teeth started to strip on the guides so the motor would continuously run until it timed out. I ordered one micro switch a few months back while trying to figure out my issue so I'll need to order another to get everything working properly. I really hate to cut and splice an original harness but at this point I just want my active spoiler working again.
HIGHLY interested in set of the guides. PM sent
