Some states have begun to crack down on the use of these kits, failing cars at inspection time, and a couple have begun to issue “unsafe vehicle” citations which require the car be repaired on site or towed to a shop before it can be used on the road again.

I believe that in many countries, you can't use HIDs without a leveler of some type.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys.....newbie here again.......I posted a question on headlight conversion to HID........got 70 views and 0 replies. Is this a sensitive subject.....something I don't know but need to about this topic? Best Les.

POST 2Original post

anyone want to tell him what happened to the last guy who asked about this?? Just kidding, Welcome to Rennlist!

POST 3Original post

I think his widow is still in mourning, so I'd rule her out. On a serious note, did you try a search? I'd bet it's been covered. You need it, we got it.

POST 4Original post

Oh, I thought you meant converting your headlights to a 997 look...

POST 5Original post

Patience is always important. We have a couple thousand regulars on the 996 Forum, but most do not spend their days and nights here like I do. Specific questions like yours require someone who has attempted your request to respond. Not many have done that recently. Yes, SEARCH is important. But specific data about a specific mod requires some time for the right folks to roll through here for you.

POST 6Original post

If you click on "search this forum" from within the 996 Forum and do a search for "HID conversion" you really will come up with a lot of relevant responses. Best of luck! -Eric

POST 7Original post

You know... I have to say that I am disappointed in my factory Bi-Xenons. They are not nearly as clear and sharp as those in my E90 BMW or the Toureg I drove for a while. Now, that is 2002 technology vs. 2004 and 2007 tech, but still. I actually wondered if they were really in there, or just on the option list.

POST 8Original post

I did a conversion on an '00 from standards to the factory Bi-xenons with the factory leveling set up. I think it only took a couple of hours to install and the entire kit, everything included was right at $2600.00. Had our local 928 vendor source out the Bosch head lights and ordered the leveling controller from Porsche. Was pretty amazed at the difference. Now as for changing the standard stuff out and putting in the cheap HID crap you see on e-bay, I've got no advice besides don't do it.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.......I'll search the forum postings.

POST 10Original post

+1 to Sean's comment about cheap ebay crap. There are a couple good threads on renntech that come to mind. http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...logen-housings http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...onversion-kit/ (I think it's funny we aren't replying in his original thread). And courtesy the always knowledgeable JFP: "Any aftermarket HID “kit” that does not include projector assemblies is going to be subject it intense glare for on-coming drivers. Some states have begun to crack down on the use of these kits, failing cars at inspection time, and a couple have begun to issue “unsafe vehicle” citations which require the car be repaired on site or towed to a shop before it can be used on the road again. In addition to the glare and legality issues, we have had several cars with these aftermarket HID’s come into the shop with all kinds of electrical problems, ranging from error codes in the onboard computer system, charging problems, to burnt wiring, and HID’s that would not ignite. As the result of the problems we have seen, when we get a car with these systems installed in them in for a PPI, we rate this item as a “deduct” from the car’s value…….."

Kudos for doing it the "right way", Sean--seems like most guys just ignore the auto-leveling feature in lieu of just making sure their neighbors know they have HIDs. I believe that in many countries, you can't use HIDs without a leveler of some type. My Infiniti has a manual leveling adjustment in the cabin. +1 Didn't know you worked on 996s, just 928s. Glad to see you bring your knowledge to the 996 forum. FWIW, I think the factory halogens in my 996 are superb and have never had much of a desire to swap them for HIDs. Also, it makes me feel like I've got an "older" Porsche, even though I'm water-cooled.
