One of the major mechanical changes will be the use of an automated manual gearbox, similar in essence to the Selespeed used by Ferrari and Alfa Romeo.

With next year's 911, the present liquid-cooled 3.6-litre flat six engine with 235kW will be retained, although higher-performance versions will use a 3.8-litre variant producing about 260kW.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone have any info on the 996 facelift.(ie when it's due and the changes etc) Does anyone have any photos? I am about to finalize a 996TT order and don't know whether or not to wait for the facelift ,apparently due mid-2003.
I would appreciate any info. Thanks!
Guys FYI Australian Press 31/01/2003.......
After a radical departure from tradition with the Cayenne 4WD, Porsche is using history to shape its icon's future. By Bob Jennings.
Porsche is delving into its past to create the 911 of the future. The silhouette of the classic sports car has barely changed in the past 50 years but the German maker is taking a closer interest in its history with the next 911.
As these computer-generated images from spy agency Automedia show, next year's car is going to look like the model replaced five years ago.
The photo shows that the "fried egg" headlight design has been dropped in favour of the round lights characteristic of previous 911s, and indeed of its predecessor, the 356.
European reports say Porsche is allowing more engine noise into the cabin, following complaints the present model is too quiet.
As reported in the Herald late last year, Porsche says it will retain the 911 badge, despite the number being shorthand for the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Some Porsche owners in the US have removed 911 badges from their cars but Porsche says research it conducted last year showed that people want the car to retain its famous name.
The new 911 is due to be unveiled later this year and go on sale early next year. As was the case in previous 911s, the fog lights and turn indicators are separate from the headlights.
The revised bodywork will allow the use of 19-inch wheels, and the rear of the bodywork is more rounded than the present model. It will incorporate a retractable spoiler.
This modified generation 911 will be the last before the replacement model in 2006. Until then, the round headlights will help differentiate it from the Boxster, of which a hardtop version is expected in 2005, according to European reports.
With next year's 911, the present liquid-cooled 3.6-litre flat six engine with 235kW will be retained, although higher-performance versions will use a 3.8-litre variant producing about 260kW.
Again, the European reports suggest that the sound deadening in the car will be reduced; not only will this lighten the car, but it will allow more of the engine's distinctive noise to enter the cabin.
The instrument package is expected to resemble the Cayenne's, with provision for a TV/satellite navigation screen.
One of the major mechanical changes will be the use of an automated manual gearbox, similar in essence to the Selespeed used by Ferrari and Alfa Romeo.
Porsche was one of the pioneers of this sort of system with its old Sportomatic shift in the 1970s, in which the clutch was disengaged electronically when the driver put pressure on the gear lever.
However, the new system will be highly sophisticated and use two clutches, similar to a system coming in the Volkswagen Golf and Audi TT next year.
The advantage of the double clutch (one will work on first, third and fifth gears and the other on second, fourth and sixth) is that there will be virtually no interruption to power delivery, allowing smooth gear changes.
In Australia, Porsches sales were among the few to have dipped in last year's record retail year. Porsche Cars Australia claims this was a result of production limitations.
But challengers are on the horizon. Ford-owned Aston Martin is headed by Dr Ulrich Bez, formerly of Porsche. Bez is the brains behind the British brand's baby 911 contender, the AV8, unveiled in Detroit.
He was also responsible for Porsche's Vehicle Research and Development, the establishment of Porsche Engineering in the United States and the company's motor sport programs in formula one, the World Sportscar Championship, Indianapolis and Le Mans.
He held similar research and development positions at BMW and Daewoo.
Cayenne-like interior, double-clutch transmition, 3.6l 320HP and 3.8l variant, retro-look styling...well, those are the rumors of the new 997 model rather than a 996 restyling. If thats what you are reffering to (997 model change) you will have to wait till 2005 at least. And if you are waiting for the TT version then probably till 2007.
Here is also a previous post from DonW...from Cape Cod about an article on AUTOSPIES on the matter:
"2004 Porsche 911 refresh
What will it be like?
We got a chance to sit down with the Porsche guys to see if we could confirm the rumors of a significant refresh (997) to the current model coming in 2004.
Well sorry to break you hearts, but it's not coming.
Porsche says the next significant change will come on the next body style, but that will not appear for at least two years."
They could I'm sure, but they've been letting the RL app atrophy for some time now. Really annoying given that GarbageTalk is still iPhone only...
I'll keep using it and hitting the report button when the app complains until they fix it or make GarbageTalk play nice on an iPad.
