Maybe a better way is to have it diagnosed and get some quotes as to what it would cost and adjust your asking price in some way to take this into account.

But I decided to drive it a bit before putting it for sale, and I also went for a PPI check pretty far away from home...

In the case of my Boxster which had its "RMS" leak fixed under warranty the SM told me the SOP is to replace the RMS and the IMS end flange and bolts with new/improved hardware.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Something weird happened, I left the car sitting for 5 months, as I just got a daughter and it had been busy...you know When I went back to the car, I saw a mild oil sipping, and I thought the RMS died again, third time on this car... But I decided to drive it a bit before putting it for sale, and I also went for a PPI check pretty far away from home... anyways one month later, not a drop of oil to be seen under the car, oil level are still at full. Car is driving and sounding same as before, no tick, no smoke, nothing special. Did anyone experience a similar thing ? Car still for sale, as I had a buyer but did not come though, and I enjoy driving the car so much ...but I really need to sale, baby is just a good fit for this hobby. PS: picture for enjoyment only

POST 2Original post

It won't fix itself - but if your car has a bore alignment issue, it's conceivable that the seal might not leak when the crank is in one position but could leak when it's in the most eccentric position.

POST 3Original post

The RMS is going to leak more when driven due to oil pressure....not when sitting for five months. Is it possible there was some residual oil leftover from the previous RMS failures that just weeped out after sitting for so long? Another one that appears in that general area is the AOS lower bellows. If you clean it up and it doesn't show anymore signs of leaking, I would not worry about it. Nice looking car!

POST 4Original post

Perhaps it was something else that caused the leak and it just dribbled and eventually dripped off the same location that an RMS leaks at the bottom of the bellhousing?

POST 5Original post

I've seen this on non-Porsche cars. The seals become dehydrated, shrink or deform slightly and leak (sometimes a lot). Once driven for a while, it reseals. Don't know if this would apply to your car, but sounds like a possibility.

POST 6Original post

as a curiosity, do you drive the car with the tow hook always on that car?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13736387

I actually put the tow how back on the shelves I never really drove much with the thing on. It looks good though. And I live in south florida were there is little bad weather or road projection so it was not a worry of mine, but I was more worried to misplace the bumper plug... the tow hook is such a nice piece of aluminum, it is really cool.

POST 9Original post

I'm very surprised that your 996 Aero hasn't been sold. You've lowered your price, the photos look great, low miles, and beautiful car to boot. I have owned my '99 for 10 years and still really enjoy it. If I didn't, I would be on a plane to Lauderdale to drive yours back to Maine.GLWS

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a bunch of interested parties but with my daughter born in June, I was totally swamped and could not deal with it, any even less going for a PPI. Things are just settling down, so i'll put it back for sale shortly. I actually had a PPI done at champion motorsports last week.

POST 11Original post

I went to Champion a few years ago with a good friend from Delray. Impressive facility and beautiful Porsches everywhere. How thorough was their PPI?

POST 13Original post

He installed the bar and has posted numerous threads about tracking/autox as well as some for sale threads for his FRS track car. Don't tell Hurdi, but he's a "racer."

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had installed a equipment roll cage in the car a few years ago, I think I went on the track 6 to 7 times with the porsche, I liked it a lot so I built a full caged FRS so that I could retire the porsche for the street only. The gt3 bucket seat were really fun but not very usable for daily use. The champion motorsport shop is just nuts, they are real VIP service, my car was definitely the cheapest thing out there that day. They kept the car for a good 2 hours and I think they found all the stuff that they could, even diagnosed missing rear brake dust shield removed or brake pad wear sensor unplugged, which I had forgotten from my old track days They took it for a good 15 min test drive and all. I would recommend that shop deifnlty but then I asked them for a quote for the IMS job and they never got back to me, I assume they are just not interested with my junker

POST 15Original post

My limited experience is the RMS leak --- if that is what it is and it doesn't have to be -- can be intermittent. In the case of my Boxster the leak only made itself known when I left the car parked for a good length of time (~ 1 week ) while I was away in my other car. Up to this point the car had never manifested any leak sign -- but it had never gone more than a day or two between uses -- and after I resumed driving the car the RMS never left any leak sign. I even took the car on an ~8K mile road trip and because I was aware of the RMS leak (or suspsected RMS leak) kept a close eye on it and the car never leaked at all on the trip. However, once the RMS begins to leak while it may not leak very much it never fixes itself. The leak may not be from the RMS. My info is the IMS end plate/bolts can leak. In the case of my Boxster which had its "RMS" leak fixed under warranty the SM told me the SOP is to replace the RMS and the IMS end flange and bolts with new/improved hardware. The new flange has a 3-rib seal (vs. the single o-ring) and the new bolts are micro-encapsulated to seal the bolts as they thread into an area that is subject to a lot of oil and this oil can find its way past the bolt threads and head and leak. After the fix was done the RMS/IMS end flange/bolts have remained leak free and that was back in mid-2002 and 275K miles ago. (The car had around 25K miles on it when I had the RMS leak fixed.) Since you have the car for sale it is up to you if you want to have the leak diagnosed and fixed and of course documented. Maybe a better way is to have it diagnosed and get some quotes as to what it would cost and adjust your asking price in some way to take this into account. BTW, that is a nice looking car. Too bad you are selling it.
