I've had the lights out a whole bunch of times in the two years I've owned the car - checked the pins/sockets, done contact cleaner, even replaced one of the blue "body plugs"...

I had a turn signal bulb that kept "burning out" - I replaced the bulb, replaced the bulb socket and it would work for a while - finally I checked to make sure headlamp assembly was secure.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

HELP!!! I've got the stock Litronics, and lately I've noticed the following: 1. The passenger side low beam (HID) will occasionally not light up on first try. I can usually to get it to light by messing with the switch a few times. 2. Separate from issue 1, when turning on my high beams, only the passenger side works properly "bright"... The high beam bulb on the drivers side is lit, but dimly...I've changed this bulb out (H7) with a new bulb, but the behavior is the same. * also, when the high beam is "on" my drivers side directional (front & rear) won't work. 3. The fog light on the drivers side is the same as the high beam - it's on, but very dim... I've already changed out the headlight switch, and while the low beam problem seems to be less frequent, it still happens occasionally. The high beam/fog light/directional thing is always there. Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Make sure the headlamp is securely locked into place so that the headlamp plug makes solid contact with the body plug. You may have to use the headlamp removal tool to unlock, re-insert and then lock. When you lock make sure you hear and feel the lock. If that doesn't do it check to make sure the body plug is secure.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply! I've had the lights out a whole bunch of times in the two years I've owned the car - checked the pins/sockets, done contact cleaner, even replaced one of the blue "body plugs"... I wish it was that simple, but I don't think so.

POST 4Original post

Don't the litronics lights have a ballast? Maybe a going bad ballast... I see, it is called an Ignition Control Unit. Wonder if that is going bad. Sorry, don't know how to test those. Hmmm..there is also another "Control Unit" on the back of the headlight. Part 9 and 12 in the diagram. Really expensive. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=905-01

POST 5Original post

Nothing is ever simple especially with electric stuff. Hope you find the gremlin. I had a turn signal bulb that kept "burning out" - I replaced the bulb, replaced the bulb socket and it would work for a while - finally I checked to make sure headlamp assembly was secure. It seemed like my locking procedure was correct but I found out that I could remove the headlamp assembly by grabbing at the edges and pulling - obviously not locked. Once I got a solid locking with a "snap", etc. the problem never returned. Good luck.

POST 6Original post

The headlight switches are notorious for going bad although I would not start there considering the $160 price tag from the dealer. My Litronic headlight would flicker occasionally so I detached the unit and carefully removed the bulb (w/o touching the glass with fingers) and took some fine steel wool to the contact points. Then reassembled with a sparing amount of silicone grease and all has been well since. There is also a small ground connector wire with a ring terminal for the ballast fastened with a Philips screw. This might need a cleaning also.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the thoughts guys... keep 'em coming! I've already replaced one ballast unit (passenger side) because I had problems with that light when I first got the car. It was fine for awhile, and then about 6 or 8 months later it started intermittently acting up again. I bought a "ignitor" (separate from the ballast) but I haven't installed it yet because I can usually get the light to go on. I'm starting to wonder if it couldn't be the "stalk switch" on the steering column - due to the fact that it affects both the high beams and the turn signal on the drivers side...

POST 8Original post

Just double-check the socket in the fender where the hlamp unit plugs into. I *thought* mine was just fine (same exact symptoms as you) but on closer inspection, the socket would "give" a bit when pressed. Turns out the yellow retaining clip that holds the socket into the headlamp carrier was missing. New clip and presto, hi beam worked just fine.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Carl, When you say "same exact symptoms" do you mean a dim high beam and fog light and no turn signal when the highbeam is in the on position? I'm just trying to clarify - The yellow retaining clip is definitely in place, but if your symptoms were the same as mine I'll do some more clean up on those connectors for sure! Thanks

POST 10Original post

I had similar issues. It was a loose ground in the frunk.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll check the ground(s). While it may be simple sounding, this seems to make sense because there's power there, it just seems to be too low to fully light the bulbs.
