Suggestion
Way cheaper than doing the Porsche OE Dimming mirror retro fit too, the Gentex kit comes with all the need trimming stuff which makes a nice clean install.

I then sanded the switch down so you could no longer see the window picture on it with 800 grit sandpaper and then sprayed it with the paint that was recommended above.

Which by the way is hard wired thus eliminate the need to ever have to replace the battery in the remote unit as you would with the garage door remote.

On one end of each wire, crimp on a female wire connector (5 total)...set two of these aside after.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Closest ive seen isnthe Heidi/Franny garage vid, but still not the same looking circuit board.
Ive read through all of the many threads about this mod. All of them do a great job, but none of them have my exact remote. Closest ive seen isnthe Heidi/Franny garage vid, but still not the same looking circuit board. Im trying to figure out where to solder my wires on the back of this Chamberlain 3-button remote. I will be using the big button (top button on circuit board) for my garage door and then the lower left button for my gated community entrance. Thanks for any help!

If you have a Chamberlain or LiftMaster, maybe this will help you out. A few of the pics are from a Youtube vid I found. Cheers!
Parts:
Chamberlain (or LiftMaster) keychain remote
956ev-p2 ($17.99)
eBay
Porsche 2-way switch (Targa shade)
996-613-119-10-A05 ($47.63)
Harper Auto Parts
Porshe non-smoker shelf kit
9X6NSS ($84.95)
Suncoast Parts
Female wire connectors (x5) and some wire (enough for about 5 sections 7-8” long)
Hardware store
Tools:
Wire cutters
Wire crimper
Heat shrink tube or electrical tape
Solder tool and solder
Flathead screwdriver
Dremmel tool
Process:
1. Program remote to your door(s) - if using 2 doors, use the big button and bottom right button
2. Cut 5 sections of wire (7-8” long), strip both ends on each and twist tight
3. On one end of each wire, crimp on a female wire connector (5 total)...set two of these aside after.
4. On the other end of the remaining 3, tin the wires (add a little coating of solder)
5. Use flathead screwdriver, pop open the remote and remove circuit board
6. Position board like the pictures I’ve provided.
7. Add a very small dab of solder to the posts of the buttons you plan to use. fyi, 2 doors will be 3 wires. 1 ground and 2 leads.
8. Solder your “tinned” ends of 3 wires to the board (be careful it happens quick). Make sure wire is secure after. Tip: If using one color of wire, mark which wire is your ground and which is door 1 vs 2.
9. Circuit board will not fit into housing with wires, using dremmel tool, trim housing side a little to fit wires through
10. Shrink wrap or wrap wires with electrical tape and close remote up. Done!
...the other 2 wires you made will be used to draw power to light the switch (if I understand the mod correctly) by plugging the connectors to the outside posts of your new Targa switch and taking the exposed ends and either splicing them (or what I plan to do is just sticking them into the outside posts of one of my window switches which will be nearby)
I haven’t got past this part yet as I’m waiting for switch and ashtray delete (non-smoker shelf) to arrive. I’ll post some pics below and then the rest of my work when I get my parts.
For Chamberlain or lift master
Targa switch
Non-smokers shelf
Five female wire connectors
these are the two buttons I used.
For all three buttons here are the leads and grounds you could
Here are the two leads and the one ground that I used. I have two garage doors so I used two buttons
Im sure you can get the parts at other locations, this just happens to be where I found mine. Prices seem similar regardless. More to follow when completed!
Cool. I will report back up with a 👍🏽 when I get my parts and finish the project. Wait for that before you do it....that way if I fail you dont follow my lead! 😜
Still dont have my switch or tray yet, but they have been shipped! I decided to get really crazy and do the mod to my community gate remote. Since I already plan to use my Targa switch for both my garage doors, I had to acquire a second switch. Decided to save a few dollars and bought a used window switch on ebay. I plan to sand it down and paint black (saw it in another thread) and go with a stealth switch next to my garage switch. I took apart my gate remote and it is just 1-button (looks the same as any of the 3 buttons on my garage remote) so I took a gamble and soldered 2 wires in the same spots as the pictures from above. Remote still works fine, but TBD on switch when it arrives in the mail. 🤞🏻
I plan to slide both remotes in the center console tunnel. More to follow! Cheers.
Not sure which is more work, this mod or just installing the Gentex rearview mirror with the auto dimming feature & the built in 3 button Homelink garage door opener. Which by the way is hard wired thus eliminate the need to ever have to replace the battery in the remote unit as you would with the garage door remote. Personally I think its cheaper to just do the auto dimming mirror mod because it yields 3 separate controls (for 3 separate garage doors) in case you need them, it eliminates the need to ever revisit the battery if it ever needed to be replaced and you gain the nice auto dimming feature. Which is nice for when you get these clowns with their bad want to be HID/ xenon modification headlights behind you. Down side is you splice into 3 wires and have to remove the over head light/sensor housing, oh and ditch the OEM mirror. The Gentex (GNTX-453) mirror can be picked up on eBay for the price of the Tip sun shade switch. Way cheaper than doing the Porsche OE Dimming mirror retro fit too, the Gentex kit comes with all the need trimming stuff which makes a nice clean install. Nice wire up though and its good to see the our beloved 996 has so many was to be modified to your hearts content.
....now you tell me!! 😜. Thats pretty sweet, but I dont mind doing it this way. Gave me a good reason to get the non-smokers shelf anyways since I can use the cubby (I dont have the glovebox) and I had two blank spaces for switches anyways. Thanks for the info tho!
Here is my final wire harness.
1 & 2. Garage doors 1 & 2
3. Leads to Targa switch
4. Leads to new blacked out switch
5. Community gate remote
6. Taps for switch lighting from a window switch wire harness
I did this mod a few weeks ago.
I made sure I bought a remote that was 12v DC and then ditched the battery and powered it off the cigarette lighter.
I cringe whenever I see people using those Scotchlok type crimp splicers. I like everything else though.
I have a single garage door so I just got the cheapest Chamberlain compatible remote I could find.
95% done! Works awesome! Waiting for second switch to arrive then I will throw inthe gate remote. For lighting power, I opted to NOT use anything to splice with. I simply took the wires and slipped them into the harness plug before plugging one of the window switch back on.
For lighting, use the outside posts of a neighboring switch. Brown is Neg (ground) and blue/red hash side is positive. Easy!
Horsepower gain = 0
Coolness = 👍🏻
Cheers!
So I ended up getting a used window switch from eBay for $15. I then sanded the switch down so you could no longer see the window picture on it with 800 grit sandpaper and then sprayed it with the paint that was recommended above. I did about 2 to 3 coats of that let it dry pretty good and then I put on a satin clear-coat. About 2 to 3 coats of the clearcoat spaced with enough time to let it dry each time in between. installed it connected my gate remote to it and it looks and feels nice.
So in the end my left switch opens and closes my two garage doors at my house and the right switch does my community gate. They work great!
