With 200K miles and that price, aftermarket rims, unknown service history, looks like a sketchy used car lot...

This was in 03, were they even replacing IMSB's in 03??

Use the 'due for a rebuild' argument to start at 10k like Bill said.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

01 Carrara 4. 200k, needs clutch and rotors, Maybe more. I have never seen these wheels before. Anyone know what they are? Are the std for this car??
They are asking 14k, seems high. What do you all think.
TIA
Maybe a bit high, IMO, but not crazy. Depends on how everything else is. I bought a cab with 135K miles for $10K but it needed lots of cosmetic work and a steering rack.
Offer $10K and hope they come down a little. How's it drive? What's the interior look like? Service history etc...The wheel are the last thing to be concerned with, either you like them or you don't!
There are others out there...
Use the 'due for a rebuild' argument to start at 10k like Bill said. Between risk of a rebuild and the deferred maintenance 14 seems high. Use that leverage.
Those are aftermarket wheels - not sure of manufacturer. PPI...PPI...PPI - don't believe the "all it needs is..." arguments. It looks like those headlights need a good polish...
Too high considering a beautiful arena red coupe just sold on Bring A Trailer for $17,750 that appeared to need nothing with 78,000 miles. I would say this car will need enough work to shoot over that price and you will have a rebuild on your hands well before the other.
Considering the mileage, someone had to have taken care of it since these cars can experience failures well under 100k miles if neglected. Get a PPI and like others have said, use the rebuild as leverage. PS - these are OEM wheels for the C4, they are just uncommon.
Just looked at your ad. Beautiful car... OP should buy this instead. I bought my car on Autotrader Canada and looking back I think it was a huge mistake. If I were to buy another, it would be from an active enthusiast on this site or my local Porsche club. Too many unknowns otherwise.
With 200K miles and that price, aftermarket rims, unknown service history, looks like a sketchy used car lot... I'd pass. There are too many others out there that are in better starting condition.
With any car you don't have history for, the conventional wisdom around here is plan on $5K in potential service costs. Depending upon whether you can DIY any of the work, this car could probably use every penny of that. The dealer will have you in that range in no time for brakes and suspension alone.
They're out there in this range. I'm trying to sell 2000 with all the service up to date, factory rims, good tires, 107K engine, new: brake pads and rotors, clutch, flywheel, AOS, hoses, RMS, fuel filter, battery, you name it - and I'm close to that price, even with the PSS10 suspension on it..
Thanks for all the comments and info. Random comments: Agreed, wheels not a big deal, just have never seen before and they are beat up. Interior looks like a 50k car, zero wear on drivers bolster, made me think it was re-done, if so the work was top notch. . It drove tight and rode very well.(but to be honest, this is the first 996 I've driven. Accelerated thru the gears smoothly to redline. If I did not know the mileage, I would believe it was a sub 100k car. The front bumper cover is trashed with knicks, you can't see in the pictures, but rest of paint looks good, needs a good detail, but decent. I was thinking about the PPI and then maybe starting at 9K as see what they say. But I don't want to go more than 10K. But I am sure there are better examples with a Hx out there.
I am completely open to learning about cars for sale from members of this forum, so contact me at jcdod93 at that google mail place. Or thru PM's here. Again, thanks and I am looking forward to becoming a Porsche owning member of this community.
PS: JimmyB, nice to see Saab's in your ownership history. That Is what I have too. Did some fun things with the Classic 900 turbos.
@efd914: Where is the car located? Any indication of IMS/RMS replacements? If the clutch hasn't been changed, it could be due for both of those jobs as well.
Hi Frank, the car is in Colorado. Spent it's whole life here. Carfax shows 4 previous owners with RMS replaced under warranty at 30k. This was in 03, were they even replacing IMSB's in 03?? I have no other info than that. I would imagine that the clutch has been replaced at least once. I can't see a clutch lasing 200k. So I would hope the IMS was done, but again, I have to info for that
A good mechanic should be able to tell if the car has been maintained for the 200k miles. I dont know if Id lowball down to 10k but Id probably start $11.5k. As long as the is mechanically sound minus the things you already know. The wheels are not stock 911 but do look similar to cayenne wheels. Its easy to check if you take one off. And yes the cayenne does have a similar fitiment to the 996. Personally think 996 are an amazing buy these days and will start to climb back up as they are one of the last user serviceable 911s ans are basically the last generation of analog 911s.
The ims thing is highly owner blown and the issue affected at most 7% of cars. Most cars over 50k wont have an issue but it should be done when the clutch needs doing.
Personlly think 996s are the car to own and dont worry about the haters out there. You may however want to see what other options you have near you in the 13-15k mark. Some may have a better service history that may put you more at ease.
just my 2
Pass on this one, it seems like a very poor deal to me. I feel like for that kind of money you can get one with the IMS/RMS and clutch done and it won't have 200k on it. Im not sure of your overall budget but if you were willing to spend around18-20k you should be able to get a really nice one with under 100k. If you are willing to take the gamble have the PPI done first, then offer money because not many are going to want to come down 4k and then allow you to take it somewhere to have it nit picked again. Just my opinion, good luck!
From what you described it needs $3k in work on day one, so they are asking $17k for a 200,000 mile car. In today's market you could do A LOT better. If it needs a suspension refresh, which you might not know if you are unfamiliar with the brand, add another $4k minimum.
Not sure if you're into a tip cab but I have this for sale:

Also included for rennlisters is my Durametric with laptop.
Make me a reasonable offer and you might be surprised! Best to you!
They are actually asking 14K. Here is the listing

My sons friend works at a Porsche indy shop, he is going to check it out for me. Agreed, not worth what they want. I am thinking IF I offered anything, I would not want to pay more than 10k for it, probably starting around 7K based on a comment that it is not much better than a rolling chasis, a bit harsh but maybe some truth to that. But I also agree that much better cars can be found, esp from this group here for better value vs all the unknowns with this one.
PS: is it reasonable to assume with the miles that this car has had the IMS sorted?
Very off topic, but I looked at the Victory ad photos.
Whats up with the huge airbag warning sticker just under the passenger airbag.
I dont think Ive ever seen one there before.
Have I just never noticed them before on early cars?
Ive worked on quite a few now, but normally I dont get inside them very often except to start them.
But I cant believe Id miss something that prominent.
I think even $10K might be too much.
I have a 66K mile C2 cab 6 speed with Brembos, Radius wheels, FabSpeed exhaust, new tires, and some other stuff. I'm down to $17950 asking price but best offer so far has been $15K and that guy didn't even come look at it. In fact, I haven't gotten anyone to actually come look at it out of the 3 or 4 inquiries I've gotten.
If my low mileage car in very good condition is only worth $15K that 200K car can't be worth $10K if that (plus all the dealer fees).
