Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had them pull the hardtop, inspected the soft top.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect soft top' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'spark plug tubes' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean carfax' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I first saw the price it seemed cheap, the oil leak is probably the spark plug tubes which leaked the same on mine until I fixed it, its a pretty simple job.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just joined up.
I have been looking at a few cars at Indie dealers.
2000 996 Cab
6 spd RWD 80k miles for 15k Silver with blue.
I test drove a Cab last night.
After reading a few threads here last night beforehand. I fired up the car, Let it idle while I inspected it. 15 minutes worth. Then drove the car. It has an oil leak, drivers side head area, (saw the spot on the ground and matching spot on exhaust manifold) On the test drive. I ran thru the gears and RPMs. On decel, it smokes grey. You can see it and smell it with the top down. The guy seems to think its the oil fill tube. I think its internal. But after the second time, The car still smoked lightly as we drove along in cruise.
The car comes with a hard top and the soft top. I had them pull the hardtop, inspected the soft top. Rear glass on the soft top is faded.
The top whines a bit on going up and down. There is a light on the dash with an arrow pointed to the rear of the car, (lower left on the cluster) Not sure if that is a fault for the top or for the rear decklid.
A/C is great and has an upgraded radio. Loud exhaust, must be aftermarket, right side tip was lower than the left. Bottom of the car was clean, no signs of damage. shifted good, no clutch slip. clean carfax with service history. Under the oil cap was clean, oil was full and clean on the dipstick.
I think unless they show me a leakdown on the motor. I might pass.
The next car is a 1999 996 coupe.
6spd /RWD car. Red with tan Going this afternoon to see
I have heard that the 99 was the light chassis, and the coupe is the iconic body style. So values might level out on these?
Also found one of these in Yellow.
My other choice is a 07 Cayman. But I think the market is still sinking on these.
Any feedback?
What ever car you decide on, have a PPI done by a qualified m96 specialist, good luck!
There are a couple of really good cars for sale here on Rennlist that have all the preventative maintenance already done.
Yeah, I have been looking at them.
I need to drive a C4 I guess as well.
The PPI I can get done at work. I'm new to Porsche, But not to the automotive world. I just have a steep learning curve the next few weeks. Not in a big rush to buy. But if the right car pops. Then I light to know as much as I can.
This is a great site for reading.
I'd pass on that cab. When I first saw the price it seemed cheap, the oil leak is probably the spark plug tubes which leaked the same on mine until I fixed it, its a pretty simple job.
The smoking is more concerning, unless a PPI showed the smoke to be a simple fix I'd walk from this car.
My 110k mile cab uses no oil and no smoke as a reference point. Top whining is normal, faded plastic window is also normal and can normally be polished.
Echoing what others have said, smoke and oil are concerning unless you can 100% trace them to the source and know they're not a big deal to fix. Could be oil dripping on the headers from leaky spark plug tubes, a $10 fix, or it could be something severe inside the engine. Mine had a leaky spark plug tube when I bought it, and it was enough to leave the head a little oily looking, but never saw any smoke even though it was occasionally dripping directly on the headers. Is the smoke coming from the tailpipes, or from somewhere else (e.g. dripping on hot headers)?
The warning light you're talking about is for the rear spoiler. It should come on when you start the car, and then go out once you accelerate to about 5 mph in either forward or reverse. It has to get a valid non-zero measurement from the vehicle speed sensor before it's happy that the automatic speed-dependent spoiler will deploy.
I'd go for the coupe. Fewer parts to fail, fewer place to leak, cleaner lines, and lower weight. But obviously those are all personal opinions!
^^ What he said.
EDIT: if a Cayman is on the list, I wouldnt rule out a first gen Boxster S. I believe they are just as fast as a 996. I had one and it's brilliant. Someone is selling one a hair under $10k here on Rennlist.
