Given such obscene price for replacement of the special key, why not completely delete or bypass the electronic security system, and just use the old fashioned mechanical lock system?

Using the VIN, they ordered and received new key blades from Porsche, and they had new key heads in stock.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

But when they tried to reprogram the security system to the new key heads, they said it didn't work.
Hi folks,
I'm new to this forum, so I'd like to say thanks in advance for your collective wisdom and help. My wife and I have a 996 cab and a 968. We purchased the 996 last September, and it came with only one key. The key was stolen out of my wife's Jeep, and now we are partway through the saga of having the Porsche dealer provide new keys. Using the VIN, they ordered and received new key blades from Porsche, and they had new key heads in stock. But when they tried to reprogram the security system to the new key heads, they said it didn't work. In their confidence-inspiring words:
"One tech tried and then we got another tech to try, but now we are locked out of the computer. With these things, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. We are going to need to replace your security system computer. Please pay us $1900."
With a little internet browsing, I've learned that the security computer can only register a limited number of keys at a time, and that the dealer needs to delete old key entries before (in order to) add new keys. My suspicion is that the techs messed up these steps.
What do you think?
Thanks very much!!
From Loren on Renntech: I have actually programmed (new) keys to cars using a
PST2
and
PIWIS
- there are IPAS codes needed as well as original unique key number code.Only 4 keys can be programmed at any one time - and to overwrite one of the 4 key codes you need the original key and the unique key number code.
Only a dealer can do this.

$1900? The part must be crazy expensive. How about finding a place that is parting out a smashed up 996, that does have the original keys, have them clear out all the key codes and sell you the used part?
