Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
If yes, then it might make sense to check the voltage at the starter during this event, but not sure there's enough space to do that.
Leading evidence: 'Check voltage at the starter during this event' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check voltage at the starter during this event' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
From what I recall, the starter is pretty cost effective, so if you're going to spend time on the labor, might just make sense to replace the starter anyway.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Symptoms: Sometimes slow to turn over, sometimes does not start and the solenoid does not click, hot or cold makes no difference, the cable ends all look fine with no corrosion, and random "whirring brushing" sound can be heard from the transaxle tunnel while trying to start usually when it is turning slower.
HI everyone:
I have searched multiple threads on this and other sites, and believe I have it narrowed down, but my starting issue has a couple of differences.
It is a 99' with about 110,000 on her, battery is almost new, the ignition switch is almost new, and the alternator is fine.
That sound can only be heard from the inside.
Once started, runs absolutely great/normal.
I am assuming starter is on its way out, maybe the internals straining are transmitting sounds through the flywheel to the trans. etc...
Any help is always appreciated. Thanks!
Yeah, could be the starter. When there is a slow start or a no-start situation, can you easily resproduce the issue? If yes, then it might make sense to check the voltage at the starter during this event, but not sure there's enough space to do that.

Sounds to me like your starter is going bad. When the starter solenoid does not kick in, the starter is not getting the full 12V/and amperage necessary to engage the stater. Or the bendix is not kicking the starter gear into the flywheel and it is just spinning, or in your words, just making a whirring noise. Replace the stater with a new Bosch SR0808N. You can get one off Amazon for a pretty good price.
Mine is getting a new starter and earth lead for the same problem. The garage said the earth lead was shot and the mounting bolt corroded. Should get it back in a few days.
Thanks for the replies! That is why this forum is great!
I ordered a new Bosch one from NAPA, $237 and with a lifetime warranty, and no core charge.
Question for AWDGuy. What are the symptoms for the crank sensor? Is that a common thing to go out?
You can get misfires with a bad CPS. Mine started to die this summer & now it's sitting in a parts bin @ home. I had misfires under mid to heavy throttle when fully warmed up + slow start at times. Not entirely sure if the latter is a symptom from CPS or coincidence.
Hey everyone, four hours later and $237, and i put in the new starter.... works great! Problem solved! Good Lord, I feel like i have arthritis now!
For me, the two hardest parts were taking out the bottom starter bolt, and putting the rubber rings back on the throttle body/plenum.
thanks again
