Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. The tail lights I used had resisters per installed.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Stock 3rd brake light.
Smoked LED 3rd brake light.
Stock driver side tail light.
Depo LED driver side tail light.
Very happy with the new updated look.
Not much to review. They work and look great! It was a very quick and easy install. The 3rd brake light took under 2 minutes. The tails, from what I saw online, the resistors should be relocated from the housing and secured to the car. There is a DIY video by Delray Customs on YouTube. The longest part of the tail light install was finding the right 3M double sided tape that would adhere to the body. Other than that, it's one 10mm bolt that holds each light in.
I went outside later in the evening and had my girlfriend step on the brake and put it in reverse, so I could see how they looked. They are very bright. Now I need to buy another 3rd brake light for the spoiler. All said and done will be under $800.
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
I want to do that but with the smoke tint, my third brake light is different than stock, it will need to have a smoke tint film applied.
Really considering removing Carrera emblem and doing the Porsche letters in it's place, another member did this and it looked great.
BTW, your lights look great!
Looks great!! One of the eBay vendors for the third brake light warns that with LED tail lights and two LED third brake lights you could get an error on the dash - let us know if you have any issues. I assume that you do not have any error right now with just one of the LED third brake lights?
Thanks! I really like them. I think the PORSCHE badge looks nice. You should do it. I'll probably keep my current badging as is, well, until I see yours.
I have the depo tails in my '02 C2, and really like them. Haven't moved the resistors to the body, but probably should. I want to do the third brake light, but have been concerned about getting an error code. Your car looks great1
From what I've read and seen, the resistors get very hot. Mounted on the tail light casing 'could' cause problems. It was an easy enough suggestion to follow, so I chose to err on the side of caution. I'm glad you have not experienced any issues.
the 3rd brake light look nice but keep an eye on water condensation when it rain or after a wash. I bought the same light for my old 996 & after awhile it just stop working.
There are two (2) third brake lights, one under the window (which you've shown) and one in the end of your rear wing which can only be seen when it pops up. Did you do both?
For those of you that purchased a smoked or clear 3rd brake LED and had it fail, I may be interested in buying it if not cosmetically damaged. PM me,,,
I sent you a PM on a related subject but I guess this nullifies the question. If installing this causes a bulb out error there has to be a work-around.
I have a quick update to the problem of moisture getting into these lights. Apparently the manufacture has an issue in the bonding of the light assembly to the case, allowing moisture to seep into the housing. The heat from the engine and or the LEDs them selves will cause the lens to steam up and make a very cool looking 3rd brake light look foggy... Thanks to Dean donating his non functioning smoked 3rd brake light, I was able to do a quick study to find the hairline cracks. I cut the back off, put a new strip of LEDs inside, completely sealed the casing, and now have a very nice looking, very functional smoked 3rd brake LED. Here are a few pictures of the final product and how it looks mounted. No more fog and very bright...
I prefer the style of the LED tail lights I got from MaxSpeed as they are fantastic looking LED units that are completely plug and play (took five minutes to install). Yet don't look so radically different for OEM ones that they clearly look like after market units from some Chinese EBay store.
I got my tail lights from pitlane. I love them. I tried every other led tail light out there (I have two other sets in my garage). Each has their own set of issues. I have the same ones in the first post but it was just too much red for me and my car color. I then tried the oem looking LEDs but looked too much like oem (duh). That's just not my personal taste. I wanted my car to look different. I found the clear lens with very lightly smoked looks better on my color car than the red. Still lights up very bright and looks great. The 3rd brake led matched perfectly and am now very happy with the overall look.
Yes, I also modified my headlights. That was another project that worked out great. Really looks different and 100 times better night illumination (and DRL). If anyone is interested I'll post that project as well.
When I get home I'll update with the LED strip I installed and the type of calking I used to seal it up. No issues with the cruse control or dashboard lights. The tail lights I used had resisters per installed. The tail light circuit expects an overall fixed load. That load can be applied at the tail light or the 3rd brake light (or both). If you have the correct load at the tail lights, you won't get an error with the lessor load of the led 3rd brake light. If you want more info or want me to elaborate, just let me know.

It took a long time for delivery but worth the wait.

I've done a ton of mods to my 996 in the past year.
HID bi-xenon headlights with DRL halo.
LED tail lights.
replaced all lights (inside and out) with LEDs
LEDs in dashboard, light switch and AC controls.
double din stereo with backup camera.
customer sub woofer.
dimming rear view mirror with garage door openers and compass.
activation and wiring for OBC.
changed steering wheel & clock spring to include radio controls.
custom horns.
increased range mod for key fob.
Thats just the electronics... The list of other mods are too long to list... I guess i have too much time on my hands but I love to tinker.
Permatex 81173 - About $10. You can get at amazon.com
Great stuff, sets up in about 2 hours. Stays relatively soft for a good seal but bonds to most serfaces great...
