Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I did a search on the forum first (how I knew to check the ground) but if I missed something a link would be great.

If alternator readings are fine wouldn't surprise me if the battery needs replacing - really common problem and only last 3-4 years.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

Swapped out the alternator and everything is back to normal.

No unique explicit quoted action; no causal link assigned

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey, I've got a 2001 Cab with less than 60k miles that I picked up 18 months ago as my first Porsche. Still the original IMS but the RMS was done with the clutch about 10k ago so I figured I'd wait for the IMS when I have another major service item to do. Using IMOLA Motorsports locally as my Indy here in Minneapolis (welcome any recommendations and comments but I've been happy so far). I have a new issue. Yesterday I ran a few errands and parked, when I came out two hours later it would not start. I checked the battery and it was low so I connected up the charger and left it overnight. This morning everything started fine, but as I drove I could see the battery level gong down. Pulled it into the garage and hooked up the meter and found that the battery would hold 12volts itself but under load it actually dropped to 10. I checked the ground and it seems fine and I pulled the battery and had it tested out as OK. Figured I was in for a new alternator but wanted to see if anyone had seen this resolved any other way or had any tips about changing out the alternator. I did a search on the forum first (how I knew to check the ground) but if I missed something a link would be great. Still happy to have her, old cars just need work.

POST 2Original post

Check the output of the alternator it should show 13.8 or above.

POST 5Original post

+996 on batter to alternator cable, not an easy fix but well worth it. Ashasi did a good DIY write up on it In the meantime make sure your battery stays charged and it will start just fine until you replace it

POST 7Original post

also wanted to give a heads up on the front trunk switch - (hood latch switch #99651105303) these also go bad and cause shorts draining battery - a difficult problem to locate/assess

POST 8Original post

It's happening to my car but as it heats up I can see the volt gauge begin to drop. When cold it starts off just below 14v and slowly drops down to just above 12v. Not sure if this is a true test to see if the cable is failing as other components would turn on when the car is hot like the radiator fans or engine compartment fan etc.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Swapped out the alternator and everything is back to normal. Took a few hours, they certainly package everything pretty tightly in there. Thanks for the help everyone.
