Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2004 Targa has started leaking coolant. I've found the source, and it's the AOS. I called my local Porsche shop to get a replacement, and they only one they can get is the AOS that doesn't have any connections for coolant lines. Will this work in my car? If so, what do I do with those existing coolant lines that went to the old one? Thanks!

The ones without the coolant lines are for Boxsters/Caymans so if you want to keep everything stock, I don't recommend using it. The one for our car should be easy to find. Have you checked with local dealers? The coolant lines are there to prevent AOS freezing in cold weather. If you really want to, you can just connect the two lines with a pipe nipple to bypass the AOS.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I may go that route and connect the two coolant lines. I live in SC and it's almost always above freezing. Any idea what size pipe nipple is needed? I'm not sure what the ID of those coolant lines is...

POST 6Original post

Strange, I ordered mine from pelican two weeks ago without issue.

POST 8Original post

Not saying you are doing these kinds of 'moves'. Bypassing the AOS of coolant lines, leaving off brake dampeners from the back of brake pads and leaving out the brake pad thickness indicators. Also spring assisted being removed on clutch pedals. Just a few things I read on this board that scares the crap out of me from wanting to buy a 996 from a rennlist user. For obvious reasons, give me the un molested stock 996 car any day. Why would anyone want to leave something from a Porsche 911. Maybe they think they are a better designers than the people in Stuttgart. Just saying.

Fixxxer, I see you live in Lexington. I live in NE Columbia. You do know that you have an excellent indy in your back yard? If you're going to the Porsche dealer on Two Notch, don't. No affiliation with either place, just experience.

These are legitimate points. Although the nice thing about Rennlisters is they document most of the stuff they do so that you have an idea what you are getting into. I will say that bypassing the coolant lines on the AOS because you are too lazy to get the right part is much different than having the brakes setup to where you can change out pads quickly to go from street to track pads and back. I have every part that is non-consumable sitting on my shelf including original shifter, oil canister, engine mounts (OK they are back in my car temporarily but that's another story) and the referenced dampener pads so that I can put it back to bone stock for the next guy if desired. And if you are swapping out pads regularly, it doesn't make sense to keep reinserting the wear indicators into the pad each time does it? But once again, you zip tie them to the side (instead of cutting and bypass wiring) so that they can be reinserted at any time. Sorry, just didn't want to be lumped in with the AOS guy. :P

POST 13Original post

There are some designs that are questionable. The 996 AOS is one of those in my book. Essentially we have a PCV valve designed to possibly dump coolant into our crankcase and or intake system. The idea of putting air, oil and coolant together in a hunk of plastic and then stick in just about the least accessible place in the engine bay does not strike me as the best engineering to come from Stuttgart. The wrong AOS purchase came up in another thread recently and when Ahsai mentioned that the coolant was to keep the slurry from freezing, I have been thinking about going to the boxster/cayman version and finding another solution to the freezing issue. Why take a chance of dumping coolant into your oil that isn't absolutely required? I haven't done it yet and may not but a solution for the catastrophic failures that the AOS can cause falls into the realm of aftermarket IMSB or oil filters. Every car has design weaknesses.

POST 14Original post

Ya I've also wondered if bypassing the coolant would prevent the intermix. The only concern is if it ends up in the North after you sell it. Not sure what the greater risk would be.

I live in Lexington too. Did you get a bad experience with the Porsche dealer in Columbia? My annual service is coming soon and I was wondering wether to keep the history of my vehicle with Hendricks in Charlotte or to try the Columbias dealer.
