I've been pouring over the wealth of internet information regarding the reliability difference between the 3.4 and 3.6 M96 issues and how it has changed over time.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been pouring over the wealth of internet information regarding the reliability difference between the 3.4 and 3.6 M96 issues and how it has changed over time. My understanding at this point is: -Mk1: +IMS bearings +Less bore scoring -More cracked cylinder heads -Some porous cylinder heads (though these would all be resolved by now) -More D-Chunk -Mk2: -Weaker IMS bearings (though this can be fixed with aftermarket solutions) -More bore scoring +Less cracked cylinder heads +Less D-Chunk Does this sound about right "2016" consensus? Seems like you trade the risk of a cracked head and d-chunk for bore scoring since IMS solutions make the issues a wash. Regardless of the performance difference, what do you think is the "smart" choice? Thanks

POST 2Original post

All your points seem correct, there are many pros and cons of each. Comes down to what's financially viable and what you want. There is no right or wrong answer and getting a 3.6 is not smarter than the 3.4 and vice versa. Smart choice is doing exactly what you've been doing, research. Also a PPI, know the possible issues make an educated decision and attempt to keep emotion out! Good luck with the search

POST 3Original post

To put it bluntly: ZERO "consensus" just opinions. 1. pick the MOST/BEST/NEWEST car you afford. CHEAP TO BUY vs. COST to OWN 2. have the most thorough/invasive PPI you can afford (still not a guarantee) 3. buy a proven warranty that will pick up the tab if your car craps out......if you need the peace of mind and have the $$$ to spare. Or use the money to address known problems 4. buy a 997.2 and up

POST 4Original post

Or, buy whichever version you like, put it in a glass enclosed container and just look at it. Drive a Corolla or some such to put your mind at ease.
