Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I tend to run the AC on most times anyways, to keep the low radiator fans running, but never knew the best way to handle this in the winter.

If it's cold outside even though its set on the compressor is not engaged....i believe all cars with climate control where you set temp work this way....i wouldn't worry about it.

Hi all, probably been mentioned before but, if I set the temperature on my A/C control it is remembered when I switch off and back on.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, probably been mentioned before but, if I set the temperature on my A/C control it is remembered when I switch off and back on. If I set the A/C to off it comes straight back on again on a restart.

POST 2Original post

Odd. Mine doesn’t do that. If it’s off when I shut it down, it stays off. TC

POST 3Original post

Mine acts the same as yours. Everytime I start my vehicle, the AC is on, no matter what I had it set to before I shut it off. I tend to run the AC on most times anyways, to keep the low radiator fans running, but never knew the best way to handle this in the winter. Should I keep the AC on and jack up the temp, or should the AC be off?

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 15874662

same here, I just thought it was supposed to do that...

POST 5Original post

What year? The AC controls are a little bit different between the Mark 1 and Mark 2. On the mark 2 if you manually hit the minus button on the speed till it says off before you shut down the car and when you turn it back on it will be off until you turn it on. I'm not sure about the Mark 1 cars.

POST 6Original post

even though it is on it doesn't mean its running. If it's cold outside even though its set on the compressor is not engaged....i believe all cars with climate control where you set temp work this way....i wouldn't worry about it.

POST 8Original post

Mine is a 1999. I've never worried about it, like said just thought it was supposed to be like that... now its going to bother me. geesh, thanks for the headache lol

POST 9Original post

My 99 does the same as OP's. Doesn't drive my crazy...it is just what it is. And running the AC compressor in colder temps really helps dehumidify the interior.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 15875011

I also have a '99, and it doesn't do that. If I turn the A/C off, it stays off upon restart.

POST 11Original post

I have a 99 and it comes back on at restart, like OPs.

POST 12Original post

pretty sure it does that on my 2000 also i blame gremlins

POST 13Original post

Mine comes back on at restart too. And if I had the defroster on with a low fan speed, it comes back on at restart too, but with the fan at full blast.

POST 15Original post

my 03 stays where it was when the car is turned off was on, comes on was off, stays off

POST 16Original post

My '99 turns back to the previous setting. I keep it set at 69 to appease my immature side.

POST 17Original post

Seems like we've cracked the case, boys. This is a Mk.1 issue. 2003 Carrera AC stays off but I am annoyed I have to hold the minus button to turn it off. Wish the auto button were smaller and there were also an off button but first world problems...

POST 18Original post

On my ‘99 if it is in Auto mode when I shut the car off it restarts to Auto mode. If I have the system turned off, when I start the car it comes on in manual mode with the lowest fan speed setting. Daryll

POST 19Original post

My mk II works like the other mkIIs described. Gotta be a mkI mkIi difference and not something broken. Another reason to only buy a mk II :-)

POST 20Original post

My 2001 996.1 stays in the mode I left it in. I almost never use a/c, and it never comes on by itself.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So it looks like a design fault on the mk1 which was rectified on the mk2. Shame, I thought someone would chip in with a magical button sequence that would fix it!

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 15875168

Same here on my 99. I just assumed some engineer named Hans or Dieter wanted it that way. Fine by me!

POST 23Original post

The '99 C4 has a fuel cooler that operates off of the AC compressor . It only functions to cool the return fuel charge when the compressor is on. I don't have a non-'99 996 to compare my car's behavior with, but it seems at least plausible that the HVAC preferences may be different between fuel-cooler-equipped cars and all other 996's that did not come with the fuel cooler (or HVAC controllers that were installed in 996's during the period where the fuel cooler could have been present).

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 15877044

I don't think so since my Mk1 doesn't have the "fault".

POST 25Original post

It must have been corrected in 2002. My 2000 Boxster's A/C is On whenever I start the car, regardless of how it was when I shut off the engine before. My 2002 996 will stay off if that's how it was when I shut off the engine.
