Add into that I needed to replace the front right bolt (lines made it impossible to put in afterwards) I was contorting like a gymnastic prostitute.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hate starting a thread on this but I did a search and can't find it. I am putting in a new alternator/starter cable and also doing the top right chain tensioner. Because I'm doing that, I want to move the AC compressor out of the way. I have it unbolted but for the life of me can't seem to find where the electrical connector is located. Do I unhook it at the AC right behind the AC clutch or do I unplug is somewhere else?

POST 2Original post

did you read this? https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...implified.html

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I did, thanks for the reply! I want to to the RH cam chain tensioner as well and I think moving that compressor will make it easier to get at since I'm mucking around up there. I actually have it unbolted I just need to disconnect that one thin wire that runs to it now. I stopped working on it last night after I figured I had a couple too many beverages to be safe and didn't want to start making mistakes or forget things!

POST 4Original post

Feel around the side of the a/c compressor. The wire should be between the compressor and the power steering pump.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. There is no connector there on mine - the cable (see photo) goes right out behind the compressor to the RH area of the engine bay.

POST 6Original post

It is a yellowed(with age) connector often on the outside of the inlet manifold.

POST 7Original post

I don't think I had to disconnect the one on my 2004 to just move the compressor to a safe position on the rear edge of the engine compartment. Nice nest, eh?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ugh. No not really LOL! I didn't want to risk moving it too much with the wire attached. If you say you can leave it connected I might try. Thanks man - I'll take a look

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys - got it pulled and you're right Rockhouse - I don't think I'll need to disconnect it. Can bring it pretty far forward still attached. Have a pretty clear shot to the tensioner now. I want to pull the alternator to assist with pulling that cable off and I can't rotate the darn think counter clockwise off the idler pulley. Going to rig up something to assist with it. Oh, in case anyone is interested, it appears the idlers just take 6202 bearings which are common as heck to us in the bearing world. I'm going to replace the bearings in the idlers while I have it all opened up and apart. You should be able to score SKF/*** bearings for less than $10 each at a quality bearing shop.

POST 10Original post

Spud - So you got the ac compressor to move far enough forward with everything attached? Trying the same thing, I couldn't get mine to move enough out of the way. So I turned back. What was the trick? Also let us know if this made it to where you got the 4-6 tensioner replaced. and did it make the engine crank quieter.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry dmw96, missed your reply. I actually didn't have a huge issue pulling the compressor forward. Biggest hurdles were the back bolt was not removable so I had to tie it up and out of the way and IIRC there was a wire loom in the back but it cracked due to age so no biggie. HOWEVER, I am having one heck of a time getting it back in. For the life of me I can't get it in "square" - the back of it goes in low and I cannot bring it up for the life of me to line up with the rear mount. This is driving me up the wall, I've already wasted a couple of hours screwing around with this darn thing.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

e: If anyone has some tips on getting that compressor in, I'd love to hear it. I just can't get it in square. The AC lines keep pushing against the intake plenum and even if I try to manhandle them under, something else seems to hang up. This is driving me up the wall!

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 13730694

That is strange. I never had any issues on getting it in. I'm trying to imagine why it's giving you such a hard time. One thing I'm sure is there's no need to force anything. Is the aluminum bushing/spacer seated properly?

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, once I had it seat only to realize it came out... so out it came Either way, I finally did it. I think the secret was an unbelievable amount of cursing and swearing. Right after a tirade that would make a sailor blush, in it went. I am not sure what I did differently other than the cursing barrage but it worked. It just went "right" and I could tell the rear was resting on the spacer and the fronts were good. The top AC line was getting wedged with the plenum and the left part of the compressor kept getting hung up on the PS pump. Add into that I needed to replace the front right bolt (lines made it impossible to put in afterwards) I was contorting like a gymnastic prostitute. If I had to guess, 3-4 hours dicking around on it. Just to put the throttle body back in, button the rest of it up and if all goes well I might even give it life tonight. Maybe. I'll go back to my AOS thread with any further updates. Appreciate the reply.

POST 16Original post

Spudster - just saw this. Glad you got 'er back in. So did you replace the 4-6 tensioner? Does it crank any quieter?
