Of course now, I am second guessing the new badge that was installed 2 days before the event.
Replace induction parts without retuning it), i felt terrible

Even though the buyer did something I explicitly explained NOT to do (replaced induction parts without retuning it), I felt terrible.

Tried to start the car, it ran for 2 seconds (very poorly) and stalled.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This past weekend was my last event of the season, at Summit Point. It all ended 12 minutes into the first session on Friday.
12 minutes in, I lost power and car started misfiring like crazy. I limped it offline in view of a flagger (trying to get far enough off course so they would not have to black flag).
They finished the session and sent the wrecker to come get me. Got pulled back into the paddock. Tried to start the car, it ran for 2 seconds (very poorly) and stalled. I pulled the codes. It showed an o2 sensor failure on the right bank, and misfires leading to cat damage on the left bank. Also showed an overrev of 214 that was not there when I first purchased the car. I did have a bad shift, but it was 2 laps before, and I am pretty sure I caught it, as the clutch was not all the way out.
Anyway, I pulled the filter (screw on), poured the oil into a cup and stuck a magnet in. What came back out was not good. Lots of sand sized particles. So, something let go. Not sure yet what it is.
I'm going to pull the pan tonight to see what I can see. Guessing I will either be doing a rebuild, or I'll buy a salvage car, pull the engine, and sell the rest of the parts to recoup some of the expense.
Silver Lining, it was the last event of the season, and now I have a project for the winter. Just wish it was the last run session on Sunday instead of the first on Friday.
Of course now, I am second guessing the new badge that was installed 2 days before the event. Perhaps I hurt the cars feelings.
Bummer man, that sucks. Hopefully it's something not to terribly bad. As many miles as it has on it and as much as it has seen the track, a good refresh/rebuild might be worthwhile anyway.
Yeap, so we know it was a good one with plenty of track under it's serpentine belt!
I'm going with the new badge as the cause
Ooh... Maybe a lawsuit against Gator is appropriate here. He obviously misrepresented this as a solid track car!
Dammit, not the Douche Canoe II! I thought self-deprecation was the key to M96 longevity.
Since they car will be out of commission for a while, maybe he could loan you the deck badging? At least the first word...
Sorry to hear that but it does sound like a fun winter project. And it does sound like a "money shift" caused it. Especially if it registered in the DME.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I am thinking this is my fault, of course I was tracking the car ALOT with 117K so something was bound to happen at some point. I was already planning on pulling the motor during the off season, and doing the clutch, IMS, AOS and all of the other stuff that needs doing.
Now I just need to decide if I am going to try to save this engine, or buy a salvage 996 and start with that engine as a base. I'm leaning that way since I already have a side business of parting out E36 M3s, so I am used to tearing apart cars and selling parts, and I'll be able to recoup some money.
And I think it is already widely known that this is Gators old car. Just wanted to say that he represented the car really well, and the PPI was good, and he has been a great seller always quick to answer questions after the sale. I know he did not misrepresent that car, and that he is a really good guy. Just wanted to throw that out there.
And here's a pic from an earlier event that did not end in tears (I had just passed the C7 BTW).
Failure can be an opportunity...... To start over, more intelligently.
Looking at it like this, makes it not seem quite so bad. Its only money, you'l make more! :-)
I just got pointed to this thread and didn't see it earlier. Kris, I am completely devastated to hear the news. I'm at a complete loss for words and absolutely crushed. I don't know what I can do to help, if anything, but know that I'm a phone call away.
You have a great spirit and I know you will make the right decision for you and your family. I can't imagine how difficult this is for you. I am saddened beyond saddened and almost physically ill over this.
Edit: Kris, I was speaking with Jake Raby at Flat Six tonight and he is more than amiable to discuss this with you. He saved my bacon a few years ago with a different car. Well worth a chat.
I've been in the same position, where a car I sold someone wound up with engine failure. Even though the buyer did something I explicitly explained NOT to do (replaced induction parts without retuning it), I felt terrible. Gator, props for posting your condolences.
Ed, thanks for the awesome words. Don't worry, the car will be back up and running by April (when the track season starts for us poor people in the North East). I'm just bummed I took a car that you maintained so well and blew it up.
I'm headed away for the weekend, but will be pulling the pan when I get back to take a look. I've got a few friends from the club that have rebuilt a ton of motors so I'l get them to take a look too.
Once I have more info, I will be giving Jake Raby a call. The short term plan may be to swap another motor in, but if this one can be salvaged, I'd like to do it bigger and better, and maybe I should change it to an automatic since I obviously can't shift
Kris, the world needs more positive people like you. Please let me know if I can help in any way. Hell, find a motor and I will pay for shipping. Anything to help get you on the the way to being whole again.
Jake. You know your stuff. Pulled the pan today to find this. Guessing there is not much that will be able to be salvaged. Will start pulling the motor in the next couple of weeks. At least this proves that a dual row IMS can make it to 117K without going. Especially if the driver is an idiot.
Finding the exact moment I money shifted on video was not something I needed to see. Funny my best friend caught it on tape. It was loud. Guessing 4th to 1st. Amazingly the car made it one more lap before letting it all go. It happens right at the end of the straight. Two laps later you see me to the right just before turn 4.

Buddy is in a 2015Corvette ZO6. We both started 7 years ago. My track car progression was 94 Miata, E36 M3, E36 M3 to the 996.
His was RS4 to E36 M3 to the ZO6.
When we were both in M3s, we had a ton of fun just trading positions. Now I just wait to see him in my mirrors and throw my arm out/missing shifts....
Just pissed I had a money shift in this car. I have a side business of parting out M3s, and if I blew up a motor when I had my M3, I just would have pulled one from our inventory. Time to start parting 996s!
What is the source of this ^ info?
I was told ignitions are one per cylinder for each revolution.
In math terms: if over revs are 214, then divide 214 by 6 = 35.66 engine revolutions over red line.
Based on info above, with 214 ignitions divided by 3 = 71.33 engine revolutions over red line.
I'm curious because I was told by a Porsche tech (who might have been wrong, or maybe I didn't understand).
I got that info from here because it's the clearest description:
http://www.911virgin.com/porsche/rev-range-information/
But I have long understand to mean ignitions as 3 per rev because 2 cylinders fire simultaneously each ignition. Similar info here:.
Just think of all the fun you'll be having this winter. During these kind of projects I've found that cussin' at the wrench, screwdriver or my bloody knuckles makes the job go
so
much faster. Good luck.
I put 125 range 2 on my engine last weekend. It's now up to 815. I'm hoping it goes another couple of years but if it doesn't make it past next weekend I won't be totally shocked.
Sorry to hear about your money shift Kris...best of luck in getting the car back on track. I occasionally do track events with the Riesentoter region but I haven't seen your GR 996 at the track(although, I haven't done any PCA events in about two years).
Did you have your car at a PCA meeting at Knopf this past spring? I was in my GR 996 and a car similar to yours was parked near me.
I was not at knopf in the spring, I was there for tech in August (I'll be the new tech chair next year). If you have not been with us in two years I would not have had this car. Just got it in April. Two years ago I would have been in an E36 M3 (silver).
Hope to see you out there again in the spring though.
