My first thoughts are to change the injector and coil on #5 and see if anything changes.

With the engine dropped to replace the RMS anyway we examined the cam timing and found the timing had been set incorrectly when the engine had been reassembled.

Suggestion · Original poster

The only explanation offered was incorrect original instalation OR the use of a cheaper aftermarket part which has apparently been causing all sorts of issues for many people.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Time to pull on the collective knowledge. Why would one cam bank show +5 degrees and the other -8. I believe the -8 bank is 4,5,6 and cylinder 5 is bring retarded. Note the rear main seal has walked and is causing a vacuum leak as well. My first thoughts are to change the injector and coil on #5 and see if anything changes. but why one bank is advanced and the other retarded seems VERY odd. Are any of the tensioners left to right different? I was under the impression they were the same. If anyone has any insight I'm all ears!

POST 2Original post

Assuming you have a 996.1 , the cam deviations are probably due to Vario-cam pads worn. As far as the spark retardation on cyl #5, it could be due to a vacuum leak affecting that cylinder more than the others, or due to carbon build up on that cylinder, or that cylinder temp is above the rest.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All: So the RMS had walked out to a massive and very odd angle (pics attached). With the engine dropped to replace the RMS anyway we examined the cam timing and found the timing had been set incorrectly when the engine had been reassembled. It was off by a full link. To compensate the adjustment was at it's full limit on both chain sprockets. One cam is still reading that it is out slightly but having done more research I believe this may be a sensor or wiring issue I will make note of but ignore for the time being as all is well within spec. The chain guides are all very new and looked to be in fine condition. I'd especially like to thank Konnor for being a stand up guy who helped greatly during this process and did the right things all along.

POST 6Original post

Uh... no pics What is the theory on why the RMS "walked out to a massive and very odd angle" ? Glad it's running right again

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We were not able to ascertain why the RMS walked out. The only explanation offered was incorrect original instalation OR the use of a cheaper aftermarket part which has apparently been causing all sorts of issues for many people. Use of the latest revision of the Porsche OEM is strongly recommended. after adjustment of the cam sprocket above...

POST 8Original post

I would have replaced the sprocket bolts and I hope you used loctite. Those bolts have been known to back out.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will go apoplectic if they do back out!

POST 10Original post

glad to read this thing is back on the road! such a strange situation this engine has caused, but hopefully the worst is behind you.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Konnor! Much good Karma for you! I still love the look of that deep oil pan. It says there/'s something special going on!
