I purchased a good used motor from him for a fair price.

My suggestion to check cam timing was to confirm that a chain was in fact broken.

Pulled the bumper and heat shields off and started disconnect things it prep for dropping the motor.

If you're up for the project, you can have a great running car with a new long block, or salvaged engine for less than the cost of most high mileage 996s on the market (assuming you do the work yourself).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm thinking the latter. I can see the ribbed lines/conduit under the intake runners are wet. When the tow truck raised the front, oil came running down the left side dripping onto the farthest rear header tub. No oil under the car at all or between the tranny and motor.
Drained the oil, no abnormal signs. Pulled the bumper and heat shields off and started disconnect things it prep for dropping the motor.
Still can't find the source of the oil that spilled when the tow truck lifted the frond end up. I see some wetness behind the oil filler tube and on the ribbed lines below the intake runners but it looks old.
Back at it tomorrow...
Oil filter looked great, sump dropped and no chunks of metal like I was expecting (20-30 small black plastic pieces) and then I turned the motor and could hear what sounds like a timing chain flopping around.
I just wish the idiot that I bought it from didn't try to start the car again after the event!
Stay tuned...
AOS, how much oil would it spit out? I got a good half cup (I'm guessing) that came from somewhere.
Fingers crossed. I need someone more engine knowledgeable than me to explain how the rod through the block deal would cause additional oil leaking during the flat bed unload process.
Actually sounds kinda promising to me.
You may just end up with a rebuildable engine.
Maybe just a broken timing chain.
Thats better than a rod through the block.
Most likely valve and piston damage, but maybe you can reuse some components.
If I ever get the F'ing third bolt off the ac compressor. I spent an hour on it with no luck!
Next, the cam plugs will get pulled to see if one of the cams is not moving.
Good suggestion. I don't want to speak for 808, but I think he has said elsewhere engine will only move about 1/4 turn before it "tightens up". Not sure he can get to TDC.
Tex, if the PO started the car after the chain broke, would that not be enough to jump timing?
Also (fingers crossed) I noticed a cam plug missing, source of the oil running out when car was tilted? Owner lied and said no one looked at it but then came clean last night.
Yes, that would jump it.
My suggestion to check cam timing was to confirm that a chain was in fact broken.
If the engine only turns over 1/4 turn and then stops, you most likely have valve to piston contact due to a broken chain.
That can also damage camshafts and cranks...and more.
You might luck out and have some salvageable parts.
I'd pull the engine and disassemble it to find what all is damaged, or start looking at RND long block costs...or really both.
Yup!
I bought the car expecting the worst, and knowing how much he put into it over the years makes me feel better about what I have to start with...It's not looking as bad as I first thought!
Well, all things considered, I wouldnt be too harsh on the seller. You got a hell of a deal on that car. For that kind of money, the base assumption should be that the motor is shot. If you can salvage anything, you are ahead of the game. Anything else is kind of dick-ish at that price point.
After hours of trying to get the 3rd AC compressor bolt off, I almost gave up and spent the $130.00 the have the system evac'd… Then had a brilliant idea, why not try a crows foot, 5 min and off it came.
What you have said is true, however, for the previous owner to tell 808 "No, never had anyone look at it." is a lie to which PO has now admitted. Why not be honest with 808? PO was allegedly "giving away" the car because of frustration. Why hand 808 an unknown if something was known. Was seller afraid 808 would drop out? Really? For $4k, why lie? Like you said "assume motor is shot", however, if a mechanic has examined and found a cam chain disconnected 808 could have already moved past the "how failed is it" stage.
I'm sorry but what is wrong with honesty? A lie is a lie!
Regardless, that part is over. I wish all luck to 808.
Exactly WB.
The owner was hoping someone would think it could be an easy fix and take a chance at $8K...I hate being lied to and liars are no different then thieves!
Regardless, I went in expecting the worse, negotiated a good price and now am looking forward to the future.
Fair enough, I get your perspective. I also wasn't there and do not know what was said or not said. I do not like liars either.
That being said, I would gladly buy a clean, well-maintained 996 roller with a blown engine for $4K any day of the week. If you're up for the project, you can have a great running car with a new long block, or salvaged engine for less than the cost of most high mileage 996s on the market (assuming you do the work yourself). Worst case, the parts alone are worth far more than $4k.

Yup, the plan all along was to pick up a used motor, or 2, a short block from Porsche Hawaii but it's is over $9K with a $5500.00 core charge, ouch!
Then I thought why pick a part a motor that may have the same issue down the road (no guarantees) so I'm now thinking Raby has a one year waiting list, for $20K I can get a bullet proof 4.0...Now where the heck did I leave that $15K.
I don't know if I can wait a year so option 1 might be my plan and save up for option . With a big expansion of my company ready to take place the next 6-8 months are going to be tough but the increased revenue after that is going to be good!
Thoughts?
I'd love a Raby engine. It just isn't in my cards due to the cost.
For a driver, I would get ahold of Mike at QualityPorscheParts on eBay (he is also PartsSociety.com). I purchased a good used motor from him for a fair price.
You could also try Norspec Dismantling, I've had good positive dealings with them as well.
I know a lot of people will suggest this is a bad idea, since you are potentially inheriting someone else's problems, but my sample of one worked out fine.
A year is a long time to wait, but at least you dont have to go out and buy a long-term-temporary daily driver.
Id consider buying an RND long block, or just buy a used motor and rebuild it using an LN Nickies set.
If rebuilding myself, first step would be visiting theknowledgegruppe.com.
RND=$15K
Correction, (long block not short)
for a short block, and nothing available at this time.
I'm just continuing the process of unhooking everything so I can drop it. Not much free time or money lying around when you own a small business...
Nice thing about the RND option it comes with a couple of the major weak points already addressed. Nickies, IMSB upgrade. I do see they have a short list of available engines. Wonder when/if they will be caught up with the demand. One of their strong selling points was the ability for quick availability plus the one to five day delivery.
But $15K... For a short block???
You can buy a spare running car for that kind of money, use the engine and sell the remaining parts to reduce your total cost.
Or a running engine from a reputable salvage yard, and have $5-6K left over.
Yeah, I get that. Expensive, but less risky than some of the other options. There are others who will rebuild your engine for less money. I have seen many positive comments about these folks, as well as some negatives about a few. It is nice to have choices these days rather than just the direct from Porsche engine which have been exorbitantly expensive. Looks like Porsche has reduced the cost of the M96 short block but it has some/most of the original inherent defects so there's that. I just would be squirmy about a used engine which could be as on the edge as my engine was before it puked. I have no affinity for RND. It just seems like an attractive option with some improvements.
The RND program are longblocks only - we have considered doing shortblocks, but you run into greater warranty concerns as we have no control about how the engines get finished.
Porsche no longer does complete engines for M96/M97, so those part numbers and prices listed are shortblocks and are sold without any warranty unless a Porsche dealership builds the engine and installs it in your car.
Mr. Navarro: Thanks for the clarification. Is RND behind on their demand? As I said above that was one of the attractive attributes of the program to me in addition to the improvements to the engine.
SSF Imported Auto Parts picks and chooses which engines we build and when, as well as which engines are on clearance. We do have a shortage of high priority engines due to high demand and have cores inbound, but at this point we do have some holes in coverage. Due to Porsche's introduction of subsidized short blocks through Classic, we likely will cease offering all but a few of the m-codes and expand our offerings to focus on building up our 9A1 offerings. As inventory gets rotated out, we are also planning several other changes to the program to bring added value like standard upgrades to JE Pistons and ARP rod bolts.
SAY IT AIN'T TRUE!!
If my M96 pukes I don't want a Porsche short block with many of the inherent design flaws still included! I do like the idea of JE pistons and ARP rod bolts, though.
Yup. Going to focus on engines that are in high demand. Once those less popular m-codes that are on clearance are gone, they won't be replaced. That's why SSF is letting them go with no core charge.
So my M96.03 is going to be in the pipeline for the near future?
BTW if I had a Boxster I would buy one of those $8500 engines and storage just for the future!
But.... Our engines have a 10-13 month delivery time after we accept the build. RND engines are stock displacement, and are held on shelves ready to be shipped... Our program is nothing like theirs.
Our pricing is more along the 22.5K point for the entry level Stage 1 Street Performer.
Knowing what I now know, an FSI build is absolutely the best bang for your buck! There is so much more that Jake puts into these motors than meets the natural eye...
Unfortunately folks generally only look at the price tag, and the wait. This is the world of instant gratification, and cheap prices (and entitlement).
Jake refuses to offer things built quickly, and with compromise.
No one really pays attention to inclusions, or reads the details.. Soon our website will be one single page that just says call us. Time to take it back to the mid 1990s...Life was better then.
I have to take exception to your above statement. Yes, the price tag is tag is high, but not for what you get from Flat6. The wait is the problem for me. I'm not a Millennial! I do not expect instant gratification nor a trophy just for participation. I also do not feel I am entitled as I worked my butt off for over 35 years to be able to retire at 55 and enjoy the remainder of my life. I am now 67 years old and it would not be advantageous for me to wait 10-13 months for an engine, regardless how awesome it would be (I know it would be awesome). Hell, in that amount of time I may not even be here or, if I am, I may no longer be able to get into the car! I fully understand Jake's philosophy of controlling a process and believe it to be valuable, as I spent 30+ of my 35 years in management for a major transportation company and have seen both sides of that coin. I respect his knowledge, his abilities, his ethics and have supported his operation on this and other forums. I have throughly read the website information and each one of his incredibly informative posts he has done in the past. If my engine pukes I plan to pursue an RND replacement engine due to his start-up involvement in helping this program get formatted.
Your statement is too broad and inclusive to be accurate. Sorry just my opinion. I still will tell anyone who asks that Flat6 is the best.
wildbilly32,
Your opinion is respected here.
Yes, lots of things can happen in a year, while we are creating someones engine. Weve had babies conceived, and born, marriages occur, and divorces occur... Weve had purschasers pass away, and lose their spouses (the latter just happened last month).
Over the year that we work with our purchasers, they become more than just a customer. We speak often, and sometimes we spend more time talking about life, and things happening in our respective worlds more than we do the business at hand. lve had customers tell me that they didnt want the process to end, because they appreciated the friendship so much..
No, what we do isnt for everyone.. Jake never wanted it to be. We might be able to build engines for a whopping 2% of the M96 powered Porsche cars produced, but not more than that. We sit back and watch all these other guys killing themselves to steal all the business they can with cheap prices, marketing, and quite frankly, lies. We see them using their purchasers as guinea pigs, and we answer the phone calls that come in when that doesnt work out so well for the guinea pigs.. Those guys come and go. They change business names and locations as much as 3 times in just one year.
We want to be the best resource for those who believe in us enough to spend their money here. Thats what we do, and what weve been doing.
That said, we sometimes have slots in the schedule that are left open for vacation periods, and when Jake wants to close the shop and give us all time away. Sometimes we schedule in more time off than we want, and that can open up a time slot for a build faster than 1 year. We sometimes have customers go through those unfortunate things that can make them have to forfeit their slot.
I have one of those circumstances now, where a slot opened up after a purchaser passed away while on the schedule. It was very unfortunate, as it was skydiving accident. The craziness never ends here.
