Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is my first post and I'm stoked to be joining the community. I've been shopping for a 996 C4S for some time now and have found a good example - all stock (with stock lowered height and 18" turbo wheels), 67k miles, manual. The only thing I noticed during the test drive was play in the steering wheel, especially at slow speeds. And a good amount of it. What am I comparing it to? I have a friend who has the same car and his steering all around is very tight. His front drive is disconnected, so not sure that would have any impact. I am having the car PPI'd tomorrow and wondering if there is anything beyond the usual suspects (tie rods, bushings, alignment, tire wear) that we should look at or be concerned about. I've spent hours in the forum before posting and I don't see much beyond the usual suspects. And if there's any thing else particular to this car you think I ought to look at, please weigh in. Thanks a ton for your input and looking forward to contributing to the community!

POST 2Original post

Welcome to the community. The steering should have no play at all. Could be tie rods and having them checked is a good idea. There are also outer tie rods and inner tie rods. Good idea to get the PPI. That will hopefully point in the right direction as to what needs to be addressed.

POST 3Original post

Strut mount bearings are also something to check on a C4S. They tend to rattle when going over bumps at low speed when they fail.
