Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
The cause was traced to an "obstructed" micro switch, i.e., with the top in the "down" position, the rear cover would not retract.
Leading evidence: '"obstructed" micro switch, i.e.' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '"obstructed" micro switch, i.e.' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pelican site' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

In my experience this was probably the hardest vert to work on in comparison to mercedes, bmw, and boxsters.

You also have to have a piwis II to re-calibrate after any repair on it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2000 996 convertible and the clamshell opens properly allowing me to put the top down but when the top is completely down the clamshell doesn't move back to home position it just stays elevated. It appears to be waiting for a switch to be activated, I don't think it is getting any power . I then will close the top since the clamshell is raised and when the top latches the clamshell will then close properly. Does anyone know if there is a micro switch somewhere that activates the closing of the clamshell when the top is completely down? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated since I am 380 miles from the nearest dealer.
I had a very similar problem with my '99 cabrio! The cause was traced to an "obstructed" micro switch, i.e., with the top in the "down" position, the rear cover would not retract. The "obstruction" was caused by a loose "Hardtop Latch Cover"...a black plastic thingy about the size of a 50 cent coin, that had popped out and fallen into the top closing mechanism. An alert dealer Tech spotted the "obstruction" and retrieved it. Problem solved.
So in response to your posting, yes, the cabrio top mechanism has numerous micro switches, and if any single switch is inoperable, the top system will not operate properly. Trouble shooting requires an experienced Tech. Sorry.

There are so many causes for a cabrio top to not work properly. You also have to have a piwis II to re-calibrate after any repair on it. Unfortunately you're going to have to take it to a indy or dealer to fix this. In my experience this was probably the hardest vert to work on in comparison to mercedes, bmw, and boxsters. Granted after repairing a few you get the hang of it and know where everything is at.
Not all repairs to the cabrio top system require recalibration. As long as you don't alter the sequence of operation during your repair, you may be fine.
Get the system apart and see if you can see what's not working properly. There is a potentiometer that rotates during the actuation of the clamshell, as well as a microswitch on the actuator mechanism. Each "flap" on the sides must also fully actuate.
Check the pelican site for how to access the system and do basic convertible top mechanism repairs.
