Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I'd say mice or rats carried the snails to your nice warm motor and enjoyed their first course of the evening there...Check all your wiring!

He told me it was very clean, no oil anywhere, or in the plenum - yea

when i picked up the car i asked him how clean the top of the motor was, since i try to keep it in as nice of condition as i can.

maybe i should reach out to Jake and see if he has done any studies to test the efficacy of snail slime on the longevity of the IMS?

When Porsche designed the IMSB they had to use a special rubber on the seal that would be impervious to both engine oil and the grease in the bearing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

so i took my '03 to my trusted indy for a starter replacement, since it's job i didn't feel like i wanted to tackle this week.
when i picked up the car i asked him how clean the top of the motor was, since i try to keep it in as nice of condition as i can.
He told me it was very clean, no oil anywhere, or in the plenum - yea
then he said that the top of the motor was full of snails - yes snails (well just the shells) i thought he was just yanking my chain
he said that it's common and he sees it quite a bit
so my question is, how the hell do snails get up in there? and where did they go???
i park in the garage at night, and have never seen any snail trails there (they are in the garden though, much to the dismay of mrs. looneybin)
is this where they morph into slugs? yukk
i hope there not hanging out in the headliner waiting to drop down on me
maybe i should reach out to Jake and see if he has done any studies to test the efficacy of snail slime on the longevity of the IMS?
or i could go the food truck festival with a sign "escargot, $5"
anybody else notice this phenomena?
A friend was replacing pedal bushings in an air cooled 911 and there were of bunch of snail shells behind the pedal box cover. On closer inspection, there were bite marks on the pedal box cover. It turns out, mice and rats LOVE snails.
did the mice and rats carry the snails up there for dinner?
i haven't seen any evidence of mice or rats in the garage, (or in the engine bay) but that doen't mean they aren't around
my area has lots of big trees and i have seen dead rats from the neighborhood cats
Once upon a time there was a contributor who blamed everything on mice. He would be enjoying this exchange. Along with the shells are butter wrappers, garlic skins and tiny forks also found in these areas?
Wow. Just when I thought nothing else could threaten our beloved 996s, now I have to worry about snails...
Off to pour a circle of salt around the car now.
When Porsche designed the IMSB they had to use a special rubber on the seal that would be impervious to both engine oil and the grease in the bearing. Turns out that mice cannot resist chewing on this rubber. If youve got snails 🐌 on top of the motor...Id drop the trans immediately. If snail shells fall out, DO NOT start the car until youve gone a complete tear down to assess the damages.
You have rats; they like to collect the snails to a nice warm place and have dinner. I've had them a few times when I left one of the cars parked for any extended period... Good luck!
my neighborhood had an outbreak of rats about a year ago, but we got them eradicated and haven't seen any evidence of them since
i guess the shells could be from that
no evidence of any chewed wires or electrical gremlins
