Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello! I'm new to the forum, and new to Porsche, and wanted to say hello. I've been drawn to the 911 from an early age, when I saw a classic Carerra with its iconic spoiler belonging to a distant family friend. With 996 prices so low, the end of the naturally aspirated 911 upon us, and the rarity of manual transmissions on newer vehicles, I was sure that if I wanted to have the 911 experience, there would never be a better time. I've been keeping an eye out for several months now for a basic 2wd Carerra that could supplement my WRX, something with a solid higher-mileage drivetrain, also that I could take to the track and not have to worry if I'd be able to drive home or not. (The WRX is somewhat less than factory-original) I found something even better, and am now the owner of a nearly immaculate 2003 996 Targa, with 48k miles. Speed yellow with full black leather interior (I love the yellow stitching). I'm absolutely ecstatic about it and hope to be around for a long time to come. My biggest issue with the car is that it is simply far too clean! And now for what I'm sure you're here to see, the pictures: VWYgp6B.jpg ScM0P4e.jpg

POST 2Original post

WOW! That is a good looking car! Congrats and drive it like you stole it!

POST 3Original post

That IS pretty! You don't see many yellow narrow-bodies. Very nice. Mine came from the same dealer originally.

POST 9Original post

Fantastic looking car, congrats!!!! If KC shows up, you will need to explain your user name to him. Arch1t3ct.... he won't get it.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the welcome and the compliments! I'd be curious to know if the previous owner is around here. I feel like it's too well maintained for him/her to not be an enthusiast.

POST 12Original post

Wow indeed! Love Speed Yellow, and yours is unique! Lots of smiles ahead for you.

POST 13Original post

Yea, great looking 996! Congratulations and welcome.

POST 14Original post

Details on the sale? Speed Yellow targa has to be rare, let's see the inside!

If so, they never posted a picture. I've never seen your car before.

POST 16Original post

Wow, what a beautiful color. Congrats and enjoy it.

POST 17Original post

Welcome. Great looking car! That has make you smile every time you see it. Looking forward to the interior pics. Not nice to just tease us like that.

Ear-to-ear, every time. I feel like it's a happy car. Due to popular request, I'll take a few interior pictures this evening.

I was in the market for a much rougher car and this was not a terrible stretch price-wise. I have always loved the color, and I was curious to see the Targa top, which is why I went to look at it. Dealer was able to work with me to get the price down close to the range that I was looking for. Cost out the door, including a 4 year/48k mile warranty, was barely more than I paid for my WRX limited new in 2011. Previous owner traded it in on a brand new 911.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Apologies for potato-quality interior pictures, but should give you an okay look at things.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Unfortunately, after 400 miles of driving in under a week, we have thrown our first CEL while idling in a parking lot, as evidenced by the above dash picture. Cylinder 3 and 6 misfire, which I will attribute to what are probably 13 year old spark plugs nearing their first service interval. I'm planning on doing new spark plugs, pollen filter, oil, and oil filter here shortly just because I don't ever trust maintenance that someone else has done on a vehicle.

POST 24Original post

^ Agreed. If it's a no-deductible warranty, don't start tinkering unless you have to...

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Spark plugs are a wear item, so not covered under warranty. However, they are inexpensive and extremely easy to swap out on these cars, and I'd like the opportunity to take a look at them first as well. Given that the car runs and drives fine and that it only threw the codes while sitting at idle, when a misfire event is most likely to occur, I'm not too worried about it. I've reset the codes, and we'll see if it shows up again. I was prepared for sorting out nuances on a 13 year old car that was driven only 3.5k miles per year on average, and is approaching a major service, mileage-wise. If it looks any more serious than old spark plugs, then it's off to the dealership to use that warranty!

POST 26Original post

Nice. If you're going to do the plugs, you might as well at least LOOK at the coil packs before you get started. If they're all cracked and nasty, two birds with one stone...

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh definitely. I won't ever pass up an opportunity to get new parts under warranty if I can. Although the warranty was more for my peace-of-mind for having a vehicle with the original IMS bearing, and how absurdly expensive it is to put a new engine in.

POST 28Original post

Welcome to the Targa Club! I love my higher mileage one I can drive and not feel like im losing money with each mile! That Yellow Is HOT! and car looks Mint! Congrats

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13176439

Thanks! I'm debating whether or not to try and keep miles off it, or just enjoy it to its fullest and see if I can top the highest mileage 996 thread.

POST 30Original post

Oh, please drive the wheels off of it! Mine shortly became my DD, and for the last 3 years I've enjoyed every mile. LOVE your interior, and it looks like you have the very desireable leather console. Enjoy!

POST 31Original post

+1 on the true full leather interior you have there... I have pretty much all leather interior minus the airbag part in the steering wheel; really wish I had that part covered with leather as well with contrast stitching like on yours, very nice indeed, enjoy. Oh well, you win some and lose some :-) Cheers,

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had Ivan at IMA Motorsport look over the car to make sure all is good, and was told that everything is in pretty good shape. I'm looking forward to driving this thing everywhere. The drivetrain has a bit more slop in it than I'd like, so I've ordered a set of Rennline semi-solid motor mounts that will go on the car as soon as they show up.

POST 33Original post

Targas are rare with only 3% of 996 production. Your full leather and color stitching makes it even rarer! Congrats and search my user id for pictures of my full leather Boxster Red targa. John '03 Targa Greeley, CO
