I fitted an Evoms to my previous 40th AE and run back to back runs on a dyno vs standard, I cant remember the exact details but I think it gave between 2-7hp more.

Having an X51 makes ordering a 100% bolt on solution a bit more difficult since there is an extra filtered air line coming off of the intake and I didn't like the idea of running a simple breather cap to the line.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The best cold air intake is the OEM air filter box with the snorkle rising to the spoiler where it introduces cooler outside air. All others suck hot engine air from the engine bay. Debated endlessly, but reality is reality. Spend money on something else. Likely to decrease your performance. Sorry to burst your bubble.
I fitted an Evoms to my previous 40th AE and run back to back runs on a dyno vs standard, I cant remember the exact details but I think it gave between 2-7hp more. Just the intake, no tune but obviously on the X51 engine
Agree with that, I monitored a while the intake temperatures under various driving conditions and a wide range of ambient temperatures ( -5C till +35C).. As soon as the spoiler goes up and with a bit of driving wind the intake temperature gets within 3-5C offset of the ambient temperature. Nothing more to gain on the principle of colder air. As close as it gets. So if you want a cold air intake put your spoiler up and thats it.
Maybe the only thing to tweak could be the air flow. There has been a consensus that the Porsche airbox is almost as good as it can be. Some report the 997 airbox is a tiny bit better.
Apparently also the EVOMs air intake is reckoned to deliver a good air supply.
didn't someone make a cold air on the right side of the engine bay with good results? make an opening on the right side of the lid as well so it pulls the air from right side vs crossing over the engine.
I agree with everyone here. I personally have a Fabspeed intake and Mufflers. I'm sure if it was on a dyno before and after you would see a difference. Enough to measure on a machine but you won't notice it. The BIG difference is the tone of the car. Intakes greatly change the tone off idle. If performance is what your looking for, it's a lot of money for little gains. If it's the sound (which makes you "feel" faster) that you are looking for, go ahead and go for it!
No. Stay with the stock air box. Waste of $$. I had a Fabspeed (was in the car when I bought it). All it gave me was a louder intake howl and CELs. Luckily the stock airbox also came with the car. Switched it out and no more CELs and car runs great. And I made $400 on EBay 😁. I dont understand the appeal of cold air intakes. They sit in a hot engine bay sucking in hotter air than the stock box. As for them looking cool, I guess thats subjective, and youll never see it while driving the car.
Ha, I have a friend who says the same thing about mismatched wheels and faded paint.
"I can't see it while I'm driving, so who cares what it looks like?"
Lets be honest. While the flat 6 looks great on an engine stand, popping the hood on a 996 or newer 911 doesnt exactly exhibit much wow factor. Not much to see. Its not like we are lifting the hood on a 427 Cobra motor....
Yeah, unfortunately most newer engines don't look as nice as an old engine.
It's not just a Porsche M96 thing.
Have you looked under the hood of any recently made car/truck?
The engines are hidden under a bunch of plastic.
Most of my friends wanted to look under the deck lid of my 996 when I got it and most responded with a "not that impressed" look.
But once I started it up and took them for a ride, they were impressed, even though it is slower than my previous car.
I'm a firm believer in the stock intake box and snorkel. However I couldn't resist the intake sound. Having an X51 makes ordering a 100% bolt on solution a bit more difficult since there is an extra filtered air line coming off of the intake and I didn't like the idea of running a simple breather cap to the line.
The solution for those with X51 or an automatic (Both have the breather line) is this Samco product. It fits perfectly, bolts on to the breather line directly, and also comes with the "Cap" so no Home Depot or Orange cap mod solution needed.
The sound is AMAZING! While retaining the stock box. I find that with the windows closed, I hear more of an intake sound vs the exhaust. It's a very harmonious combination and maybe it's all mental but the seat of the pants dyno says it's gained a little.

This is why I lurk -members like Silk and the data mined and presented - too effing cool.
When I had the stock spoiler my rear deck lid fan used to come on just after my car was parked every evening.
Since I added the Taco spoiler, it rarely comes on after driving.
I think the Taco spoiler keeps the engine area cooler.
I need to start logging my IAT and compare it to ambient temperature.
Unfortunately when I plug in my Snap-On scanner or my Durametric into the OBD the cables get in the way.
I need to get an extension and cable tie it out of the way so I can easily get some real-world stop and go traffic and high speed freeway driving results.
Curious whether the engine lid was opened or closed during the dyno run. I'm wondering how much a dyno run reflects the difference you'd see in the real world, driving around with the engine lid closed where the trapped air would be hotter.
The intake pipe is part number TB-5570 and the clips are CKTB5570.
Im pleased to see these being fitted to cars after all the work I put into getting it made by Samco. 👍
You can just put a cap on the line. The line just bypasses the TB into the intake manifold. If you look good at the design schematics in the catalogue it works as a jet pump to put some extra vacuum on the brake booster especially when going of the throttle and the TB closes air gets sucted via this line into the intake, It flows under high speed pass by the brake booster. Or at least at idle give some aid to the brake booster.
Another theory could be that it provides some extra air into the engine at idle to improve its stable smooth running and keeping all the TB and control of the ECU standard. The grounds for this being that the tiptronic compared to a manual at idle has the extra load of the torque converter spinning in the fluid. For the X5it makes less sense but considering that it has a slightly different intake manifold and different cam shafts.
When my tippie was converted into a manual the line on my car was kept on the tip rubber intake hose. But later I closed it off when I switched to the manual rubber intake hose without the side connection. I did not notice any real difference.

My take is if the engineers wanted a vacuum hose there for whatever purpose, that's the way they want it to work. I would much rather keep it with this neat solution vs to cap it off or add the breather filter.

40th steve, I found out about this part from your thread. It is an absolutely worthwhile and extremely well made addition. It was extremely difficult to order though. All the benefits of the intake without bypassing the porsche design. I am 100% satisfied even though it took a long time to get it to my door.
The Evoms air intake in my car does have a snorkel to pull air in from the outside through the grill, similar to factory. But an open air filter, so I suppose air from the engine compartment is also pulled into the engine. Was on the car when I bought it so no before /after comparison. Evoms told me it probably adds roughly 5 hp on my engine (3.8L). Engine does sound better than stock, raspier. Car is a tip and I have the "hose connector", similar to stock.
What I'm learning from the 996 forums is rather than mod the 996 that I have, save my money and eventually move to either a turbo or a GT3.
A local expert tells those of us with 996's that no matter what we do with intake or exhaust, it's not going to sound [or perform] like a newer GT3.
I love this 1999 so much that I'll probably be just saving money for tires. I've already started my Michelin fund.
20 years of technological advancement is tough to duplicate with intake and exhaust changes.
You could get the 996 to perform as well or better than a GT3 of that era, but it wouldn't be just a could of cheap mods.
Anything is possible with enough money.
I've yet to see any "cold air intake" that is actually colder air than stock with cataloging back to back. Most are poorly insulated, and have higher AIT than a stock airbox.
This is true from my experience as well, there are no noticeable differences in IAT once the temps are stabilized.
There is however noticeable difference in temps during transient rising or falling temps. Such as slowing from a sustained highway speed to stop and go, or speeding up from stop and go to highway speed.
When slowing from sustained highway speed to stop and go traffic, the stock air box will stay cooler longer until the snorkel, ducts. and plastic box have heat soaked due the inlet air being better isolated from the engine radiant heat. Likewise the IAT temps will stay higher for a longer time after transitioning from stop and go to highway speed until snorkel, ducts, and plastic air box has been cooled by the incoming fresh air.
The open air filter such as I have designed for my car(Short Ram), with a heat shield to block engine radiant heat is faster at transitioning. The IAT heats up faster after slowing, but also cools faster after speeding up. This is due to the incoming as is less isolated from engine radiant heat, but also not having to absorb heat from the snorkel, ducts, and plastic air box.
All that said, I don't think my Short Ram design has any HP advantage over stock and is only cooler when transitioning from stop-and-go to highway speed for a period of about 5 min.. I mainly designed it to give a little more room in the crowded engine bay, and to give more sound, and also for a connection point to hook up my switchable Sound Symposer so I can enjoy the symphony of the Porsche engine.
Short Ram with Sound Symposer
Well....you have to stop listening to propaganda and let your imagination run wild. The design goal for my 996 was to actually beat the 996 turbo and GT3? And it did!
And for what its worth the car had a cold air kit...it actually sucked in 20F hotter air. Went stock with 997 Airbox and snorkel.
That's what my indy tech said the first time I brought my C4S to him... he said "If you have a day job, you probably won't ever be too fast for this car, so spend your time learning to drive it quickly, you'll save money from mods and have way more fun!" lol.
I have a cheap scangauge on my cluster that shows real time OBD III indicated intake temps and it seems to me like the stock box is actually a really effective cold air intake. If the spoiler is up and you're going as slow as 35 mph for more than a 30 sec, intake temps drop to within a few degrees of ambient. Not that I drive around with the spoiler up at low speed, but I did notice that the snorkel pulls air from right behind the spoiler slats that direct air downward so I tried flipping it up and down on my commute and watching the temp reading drop like crazy whenever it was up.
I had a buddy with a 996.2 like mine but with an Evom's intake and I was able to drive his back to back with my basically stock car. I felt zero difference in power, but the Evom's did sound a lot better than my car with the orange cap mod. I had a K&N filter in the stock box + orange cap mod for a bit and it sounded about 70% as good as the Evoms, but it fouled my MAF after a while.
I agree..the Evo and k&N sound better than any of the airbox mods. The EVo is better insulated than the K&N (i had both). If anyone is looking for an Evo intake lmk..i have on off my now sold 996.2
