Driving to work this beautiful morning, a dump truck was dropping what appeared to be Rocks all over the Major highway (287-South) A couple of cars in front of me were hit, then It was my turn, the rock hit my Windshield on the Passenger Side and cracked the windshield from Bottom to Top - I have been checking online for a replacement - What annoys me is the difference in pricing - that range from $437 (OEM - w/o rain sensor) to 938 (Safelite) - since the truck did not stop, I have no way of obtaining info for my insurance, so I will just pick up the expense on my own.

Hindsight is 20/20, but you should have followed him and gotten his license plate #...Anyway, your insurance may still cover it - mine did. It was also hit by a rock/pebble but I couldn't determine where it came from. I've got full glass - didn't even cost a deductible. The one caveat for you is that you don't just get the cheapest glass - you'll be sorry in the long run as they tend to pit/scratch very easily. Good luck - make sure to check with your insurance co.
I also experienced a similar situation and my insurance company covered my windshield replacement minus the $100 glass deductible. The shop I used also managed to get an OEM replacement at no extra cost! I use an independent shop here in the Northern VA area. I suggest you ask your regular indy Pcar mechanic if he has a source. Wait . -Safelite costs twice as much as OEM? Did you accidentally switch those two around?
Anyway, I had a cracked windshield and believed my guy when he said pay the extra to get OEM glass/install. Said Safelite is not as high quality and if it isn't installed right will lead to worse than pitting, but leaks, etc. I have a Safelite replacement on our 4Runner and I can tell it is a P.O.S. Has a warp in it. And the noise on the highway is louder than it used to be so I think they screwed up the install too.
Absolutely, got hit by a rock last week and pressed the button on the dashcam to "save" that clip. Thankfully, it was just a chip and the $35 fix was not worth the hassle of tracking down the truck. Anyone running with the newer passport/escort detectors they now have a cam that connects to the radar mount and uses the same power cord.
Exactly! That's why I have a dash in my 996. One year these suckers cracked two of my windshields from unsecured flying debris. It's dangerous. Without proof, I'll guarantee you they wouldn't own up to the damage.
Sorry about the bad luck. Your comprehensive coverage should cover glass replacement. Get a good installer that's experienced with high end cars and go with the OEM glass. I always found Safelite to be higher than most other estimates.
Did the dump truck have one of those signs on the back that says "Not responsible for damage from roadway"? Those signs infuriate me when I seem them on the back of a truck dropping crap on the road.
Yea, those signs are a joke and won't hold up in any court in the land. That's like a restaurant disclaimer in the menu that says, "We're not responsible for deaths associated with uncooked foods."
Same happened to me a few years ago. I used AAA glass who was actually Safelight. The windshield without the rain sensor was actually more than one with it. My comprehensive coverage paid (minus $100 deductible) so I wasn't worried about the cost too much.
