If the shop doesn't fix it, should I use rubbing compound on the wheel, or something stronger to start with?

Suggestion

You could try to polish it yourself, if whatever you are using turns black then its probably single stage as the color will come off during polishing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I contracted to have the front and rear bumpers painted SWARTZ as would be normal for getting a 20-year old car looking better. After the job, the tops of the bumpers looked good, but underneath showed buffing/swirl marks. I am no expert, but it looked like a single stage paint job that got a half/azzd job done. A two-stage job would have shown clear that needed more buffing. What was our OEM black paint, single or base/clear?

POST 3Original post

What makes you think its single stage? My S3 had its bumper painted at the dealer before I bought it, you can tell because there is a lot of swirls and some solvent pop but its still base/clear. You could try to polish it yourself, if whatever you are using turns black then its probably single stage as the color will come off during polishing.

So it's just lazy buffing that left the bottoms of the bumpers looking hazy? If the shop doesn't fix it, should I use rubbing compound on the wheel, or something stronger to start with?

Definitely not a single stage paint process. I would take it back to the place and address the issue before you do anything to the paint.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, back to the shop it goes. Thanks for the education.

POST 7Original post

Just a heads up, it's hard to tell without pics but most body shops aren't in the business of paint correction. A lot of it is volume and insurance work, obviously if it's a high-end shop you might expect better but in my experience even better shops usually leave some holograms and swirl works. Although it would be lazy work if they did part of the bumper but not the rest.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This shop doesn't do insurance work; he does restorations mostly, and anybody that pays him when the job is done. He has two new guys that might have finished the buffing, and the tops of the bumpers shine fine, but the lower portions need the same level of attention since our cars show off the lower sections too.
