What is the danger of using cone shaped versus ball seat bolts?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Need more help and advice...I have a 2001 996 C4...I purchased 15mm hub centric spacer for the rears...the bolts they sent me were cone shaped and I understand that the standard bolts are ball seats...For whatever reason I lost one of the new bolts...I ordered 60mm bolt replacement as I thought that was the calculation...should have got my tape measure out...when I got the new 60mm cone shaped bolt and installed I noticed the wheel grabbed...I assumed that this is the parking break. When I backed off a turn on the bolt the wheel was fine. My question is can I drive with one bolt this way? What is the danger of using cone shaped versus ball seat bolts? Any comments would be appreciated
Just grind down the end of the bolt so its a few mil shorter gor now. U would be better off driving on 4 bolts then leaving the 5th one loose. Personally i would get the correct ball seat. The friction interface helps keep them tight.
If it were me, I'd consider these:

I've installed them on VWs, BMWs and Porsches.
They make wheel swaps much simpler!
You also don't have to worry about them going in too deep!
The threaded part that goes into the hub is 15mm long.
Any extra length is on the other end.
Also, spare ball nuts are cheap and probably easy to find locally if necessary.
It's what I currently have on my 996.
Strictly speak, cone shape and ball shape lugs don't mix because the lug holes on the Porsche wheels are shaped for cone lugs.
The problem with cone shape is that even though you torqued it down correctly, you are risking the cone lug loosening over time.
You mentioned that there is a slight binding now even as you turn the wheels. Regardless of what others say on this forum, don't do it. Use your commonsense because folks giving advice here don't have to live with the consequence of mishaps down the road.
Roger that guys...I took Tex Squirrel's advice and purchased 60mm ball seat bolts from ECS should get them in a day or so...thanks for the comments much appreciated.
Well I finally got this figured out...I now understand the impact of cone vs ball seat bolts and the importance of having the proper size and configuration...
Humbling experience but a good learning...I really like the look of the 15mm spacers in the rear and the handling seems to be more stable although that could just be subliminal...LOL
Thanks for everyone's input it was extremely helpful.
