Just had it vertical and adjusted the cables accordingly, brilliant shifter.

Suggestion
If I had adjusted the cables to fit the "tooled" position on the 997 shifter, it would have moved neutral slightly farther away from me to the right, which didn't seem desirable.

I might check for neutral once more with the tool before I change it over.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Guys,
I want to install new shift cables on a 996, I was hoping that someone on here has the shift cable alignment bridge, tool 9619/ OEM part number: 000-721-961-90 / 00072196190?
Preferably close to Boston, MA would be great, but will gladly pay to ship it. Seems like the dealership no longer carries it and I couldn't find it online.
Would rather buy it off someone, but would also borrow or rent.
Thanks for all your help!
9619/0 (for 9x6) is not available anymore, ask me how I know!
9619/1 (for 9x7) is still available...and works well enough, even though fine tuning might be required, especially if the shifter components are worn out.
I have the tool you're looking for. I'd like to get it back, but if you pay to ship it both ways you can borrow it. Email me at my username @ gmail.com
Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas has the tool also at $3.45 plus shipping
I have bought several parts for my 996 from them, great prices and very knowledgeable parts staff

@adm54: thanks for the link, however please note that is the 997 version (green tool). It would work--more-or-less, but not exactly the same thing as the 996 version (white tool), part #9619/0, as shown here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-ma...ment-tool.html
).
I got the 997 version from

.
Is there any difference in the way the two different parts (tools) work or fit? I thought the 997 shifter was a bolt in for the 996, and naively assume that they are dimensionally the same. Is that incorrect? I don't have a 997 shifter to test the theory with.
Both tools will fit either of the two shifters; the alignment won't be exactly the same, albeit within a couple of mm of each other and good enough for most of us, bar the perfectionist with OCD.

For what it's worth when I installed a 997 shifter in my 2001 996, the 997 tool did not line up with where the cables were set. It was close, but not exact. If I had adjusted the cables to fit the "tooled" position on the 997 shifter, it would have moved neutral slightly farther away from me to the right, which didn't seem desirable. It shifts fine with the cables adjusted as they were for the 996 shifter, so I just left them at their existing lengths rather than adjusting them slightly to force them to fit the 997 tool position. A few thousand street miles and several track days later everything still seems fine. It seems to me all the "action" is in the transmission; the only thing the tool does is ensure the neutral position is in the right place so you have enough range of motion with the lever to access all the "action" without hitting the travel limit of the shift lever. In this case close enough really is close enough.
This thread has been timely for me as i'm about to install a Numeric Racing shifter that arrived this morning from the old ol' US-of-A!
I'm going to have to make up where I feel neutral is because it doesn't come with an alignment tool though!
We've hijacked the OP's thread a bit
And, the 9619 tools don't usually work with aftermarket shifters anyhow, so you won't need the tool. Instead, they recommend to mark the cables or count the threads to restore optimal neutral position after installing the new shifter.
We sure have!!
Nope I won't need the tool but planning on keeping it with my 997 shifter as a kit, sorry OP!
Anyway, yep exactly - planning on just removing the shifter ends and installing them directly onto the Numeric.
I might check for neutral once more with the tool before I change it over.
I have a Numeric shifter that I installed on my 2002. I also installed it on my 2000 before I got the 2002. You just leave the shaft vertical. If you use stock cables, mark the metal end of both shift cables with a sharpie marker - where they enter the couplers - before removal. It’s easy enough to fine tune without something holding the shaft vertical. If you go with Numeric cables there are more fine tuning options with the threaded ends at both ends of the cables.
My apologies to the original poster, I've taken this thread way off track. Happy to discuss the Numeric in another new thread if someone wants to kick it off.
OP did you find the tool?
