My 996 had a roll cage installed by Michelin Research and Development when they bought it from Brumos Porsche.

No need to run wider in my case - I run 245 fronts and 315 rear.

Funny when you go back and look at where it started. I really need to document everything that's been done to this car.... this was the day I brought it home... and yesterday after getting the last of the parts back from paint after my 'oops' at Sebring.
Oh the places you'll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won. And the magical things you can do with that ball will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Very cool.
Love seeing these cars used for what they were designed for!
Edit: You bought it exactly when I started dating my gf and I still can't believe it's been 2 years!

Next steps will be to remove the stereo, speakers, etc. That's going to be worth 25# or so right there.
But I'm leaving the AC.
Where the stereo was - I'll make a custom switch plate and put my manual radiator fan switches.
My head is spinning trying to add up the dollars you spent to get to this point.
I bought a set of Ohlins coilovers yesterday, and I believe that has pushed me beyond the point where I have spent more on parts and mods than the purchase price of my 996. 😲
I probably won't. If I did, my wife might find out...
Two questions. What is the brand of roll cage you installed? Is the aluminum base the Numeric shifter is mounted to the factory part? Doent look like it is. A Numeric shifter is on my list.
My 996 had a roll cage installed by Michelin Research and Development when they bought it from Brumos Porsche. It was removed when they sold the car to the second owner. I want to put one back in.
Bar is an RSS 930. Nice bar, good fit and finish. The 5" riser for the Numeric is by Rennline. I love the thing. It forces you to get rid of the console though - the cables get pulled a bit.
Frickin fantastic work man! Really, really nice work you do.
I wish I had the resources to go to that level of fun building (and to track it too ). But I don't so I won't wish and cry, I just drive my baby to her current limits with a smile as wide as the horizon!

I’ve added up what I’ve spent this last year in repairs
Year 1: $846
Year 2: $323YTD
I also added up how much I would have spent had I paid list price for all my mods.
I’m over half the purchase price of my 996 in mods at list price.
Of course I found some awesome deals, so I’m probably closer to 40%.
If I’d paid someone to do the labor, I’d be broke!
Yes, at local Indy rate of $130, it sure would have been a TON of $$.
Coilovers themselves would have been $1040 to install.
I checked to see how much they would charge when I was going through chemo.
I decided to wait until I felt better to install them myself.
I had to wait from May to Sept, but I decided that $1000 could be better spent on a 2qt deep sump kit and skid plate from LN.
Next weekend I hope to be done getting my 996 “track ready”...except for maybe a low temp thermostat.
Yeah - Rennlist classifieds has been an outstanding resource for parts. Add the relationships that you build as a result of multiple transactions with folks here - aka; Slakker - and you have access to parts before they ever get listed.
Doing the labor yourself can save a ton - and I try to do some myself. However, there are certain things that I have chosen to do to this car that give me piece of mind - not because they were less expensive. My indy has been awesome to work with and I give them a lot of the work on this - not because I can't do it - and certainly not to save money. I give it to them because I want the job done right. Now, don't get me wrong - they also recognize the opportunity for repeat business coming from this car (and my, often questionable, driving ability) and have made some adjustments on things as well. Like I said- they've been awesome.
It seems like we have a contest in Central Florida of who can fit the biggest wing on their car. Good looking 996 you got there BC, looking forward to following some of your lines soon.
Keeping this updated with progress... not much though.
I bought a set of Joe Toth canards. I couldn't rationalize the carbon fiber ones - so the gelcoated FG ones seemed a good fit.
I removed the front bumper to do this because I wanted to rivet them in. After removing the bumper I used a grease pencil to mark the lines of where I wanted them to be. After some measurement I drilled the holes. On the back of the 3/16" rivets I used a thick nylon washer and a smaller stainless one. Any gap between the canard and bumper (cosmetically) was filled with black silicone.
There isn't a ton of info on the correct angle - so I talked to a friend that races professionally in the GTD series of IMSA - said this seemed right.
Not really - the front bumper is in dire need of repair. Ive gun into my trailer, ran off track multiple times, had someone back into me, and have had my kids on bikes hit it. A few holes didnt bother me...lol
the floor in the garage is the second best thing I have done to this house - the lift is the first.
Blue Chip, how is your splitter attached? I have a cup splitter I need to install, but Im not sure it will clear my trailer when loading, so I was considering using dzus fasteners to make it removable. Im open to ideas though.
I ran the same issue. My last trailer wouldnt clear. This one, with Race Ramps does (barely). Its attached with stainless screws. I ran the idea of quarter turn fasteners for a while (if this didnt clear). I would do the same with the Toth splitter if needed. My next splitter will be custom with Aluminum-plast
Great build!! - I am heading in a similar direction but with slightly different components, some questions if I may.
Do you have bhp and torque figures for your motor?
What weight is the car?
What offset are your front wheels? Do you have any rubbing issues with 245's? Are you running adjustable thrust arms to get the correct caster? what camber do you run?
I see you have added dive planes/cannards to increase front end, have you carried out the mods to the radiator airflow to further help?
Thanks
This ^ - Although when fitting a GT2 chimney you do not have to block the current radiator vent holes in the bottom of the bumper as all of the air is directed straight into the duct and out of the bumper vent - It makes a different once over 75 and a noticeable difference once over 100.
In addition, if you haven't already, remove the front radiator cowls and slot the front wing liner so as the air that travels through the rads and is direct straight into the wheel well as oppose to hitting the rad cowl and being directed at a 90' angle to under the car. - Once complete fill in the hole in the liner that sits under the radiators and use 997 GT3 upper air guide in the wheel well to direct the air onto your brakes (997 air guides are hugely cheaper than 996, but do require a little modification)
Going off of memory here - the HP was somewhere near the 380 mark. I actually need to get the car re-dyno'd and weighed for some NASA stuff. I haven't weighed the car since removing more weight from it - but I believe I'm in the low 2800 range right now.
Offsets are 46f/60r. I do have some rubbing with the NT01's at full lock - but barely. The Hoosiers clear just fine. I am running adjustable thrust arms on the car. Current camber is 3.3f, 2.7r.
I haven't done anything yet as far as flipping the center radiator, stacking the exhaust, or blocking. That's coming down the road a bit.
Next steps will probably be more weight reduction. I'm not going 'Slakker' on it and doing the wiring - but I see a FG hood, lexan side and rear windows, and an eventual re-skin of the roof with FG. Of course - I could also actually remove the stereo and speakers - but I like my music while waiting on the grid. I'll eventually get a roll bar mounted bluetooth speaker and call it good.
Would love to know how "difficult" a roof reskin would be. Have considered it LONG before actually getting a 996 as a sunroof delete. I've seen it done in E46 BMWs (Vorshlag did one) and it was on a shop car. Cant imagine what a body shop would charge.
I know it isn't the same thing, but it is close enough to give a data point. I did a roof reskin on a VW, replacing a sunroof roof with a flat roof panel. It wasn't difficult, just lots of drilling out spot welds (buy spot weld bits), grinding and rewelding. If you're only removing it, you have less metal work to deal with. I'm sure a body shop or fellow racer can recommend the right adhesive to bond a composite roof panel onto the steel shell.
Yes - every mod was done to improve lap times. Don't get me wrong - I appreciate your opinion - I have struggled with some of the things as well. I find the looks of the stock 996.1 with aero to be refined, classy, and well balanced. The car that it has turned into is no longer representative of where it started (in my opinion).
Had an opportunity to test the front and rear aero this weekend at Sebring for the 3 day event.... I had a Pro in the car for one session - Chris Hall. Amazing experience to have someone like him give his input. The car is very well balanced right now with minimal push caused by the wing. The canards and splitter seem to have the right effect on the front of the car.
Brakes have seen better days - so moving from the old PFC06's to Pagid blacks all the way around. I find that I'm having to use too much pedal input for too long to slow the car - this is cooking the fluids much faster than I should be.
Add speed, add brakes. Simple as that.

It has a plate still - there are times that I'll drive it on the street - but its rare at this point. We took it to dinner the other night - which is always fun. Something about handing the valet the steering wheel always gets a laugh. Most of the time they just tell me to park it out front myself.
I continue to take stuff out of it - so it's becoming less and less street friendly - but more fun. It's all about compromise.
Every now and again opportunities present themselves that are too cool to pass on... this weekend was one of them.
I had gotten in on the group buy earlier this year with the Apex Race Parts SM-10 wheels that they just developed for Porsche. I wanted something light, quality made, and something that stood out a bit more than my other 2 sets of OZ wheels. These fit the bill 10-fold.
Anyway, they had asked for a few pictures of the wheels on the car (which I sent in). I got an email from Ryan shortly after asking if I'd be okay with a professional photographer shooting the car at the next track day (happened to be the 3 day event down at Sebring).... uh, yeah! Below are a few of the pictures (credit to RF Martin Photography - Rafael is an awesome guy to work with, is a car guy, and shoots lots of car related subject matter.... the results speak for themselves).
A huge 'thank you' to Brian and Ryan at Apex and to Rafael at RF Martin... this was (is) something that I'm really proud of and honored to be a part of it.
Love those as well!
These are my favorite types of threads! Go on any other forum, and there's usually a build sub-forum. Everyone would have a thread dedicated to their builds; learned so much from those.
Yes. They are the 8.5 and 11's. No need to run wider in my case - I run 245 fronts and 315 rear.
The car just got back from another 3 day weekend at Sebring. I've got the results of the last 2 oil analysis from SpeedDiagnostix... there is virtually no wear - like nearly ZERO on the brand new motor. To me, that's a testament to the Nickies... the car still pulls like a train and the LSD is an immense improvement over the open diff. The Joe Gibbs seems to hold up really well - actually better than I thought. At 500/700 miles the oxidation levels are really low. I'm going to keep it in for another weekend and see how it looks.
I'm continuing to lighten the car whenever the mood strikes.
My next step is to have some RS door cards made up - this will eliminate the speakers, airbags, and the clunky side cards now... about 14# per side. Once I get them done - I'll post more pictures.
The car is in getting a small oil leak addressed (nothing major) before another 3 day weekend at the track. Will be back at Roebling on the 8th-10th. Hoping to finally run the old NT01's down to the cords and get rid of the OZ wheels that they are on.... 4 sets of wheels is too many for my garage... lol Been holding off on the Hoosiers to save heat cycles - but they're damn addictive.
Heads up - little garage sale coming up soon.... the OEM Taco wing is FINALLY coming back from the shop later this week - Arctic Silver and will look brand new. Also have a gauge cluster or 2 with under 70k miles that I'll clear off the shelf, and then, of course - the OZ Alleggerita HLT's in the below picture. For those interested - also a case of Joe Gibbs DT40, and a case of HR50 (also Joe Gibbs) are taking up space on my shelf.

Thanks for the info. I have two 996's and plan on getting the same type of wheels on my silver one. I love they way your car looks. You did a very good job!
BTW, are you on Instagram?
Great update, and surprised to hear that the stock door panels and speakers are still in this machine! We look forward to some of the small changes to come.
- Ryan
No - I got rid of it right after Facebook. I kept my Twitter for the news though. Rennlist is my InstaBookaGramTard.
I can't stand huge wings either on cars that it doesn't serve a purpose. When I smacked the wall at Sebring back in September and damaged my Taco - I knew I wanted to move to a Cup wing with the roof top uprights. I did a fair amount of research on the topic - which is why the width and the height were pretty specific.
I still much prefer the elegant lines of a MK1 aero - but this car isn't a street car anymore. It (very) occasionally finds its way on the roads or at Cars and Coffee - but it's really not safe, comfortable, or practical for the streets. 100% of this car is track function based and not for looks.
Absolutely amazing pics and experience. Thanks for sharing! It was reading -15F here this morning and I am glad some of these cars are getting used properly. Enjoy!
Another 47# came out today. Just over 8.5# from the dash speakers and rear speakers and the head unit.
Another 12.5# from the interior panels in the rear.
A shocking 26# came from the carpet on the floor of the car and over the trans hump. Basically from the front of the car to the base of the rear. The rear seat, deck, etc were already removed.
still have the doors to do. Having RS cards made and then Ill remove the speakers, airbags, and a few more pounds.
Also FINALLY wired up the new horn button and the relay over rides for the radiator fans and the engine compartment fan. Stupidly easy to do and TOTALLY worth it (at least for a track car or one in hot areas). More on that later when I make the stereo delete plate to mount switches to.
You can save .002 ounces by removing the front mounting tab from that numeric shifter. As I recall it is removable.
Youre moving solidly into dedicated track car territory, but the weight reduction makes a huge difference. Nice work!
Odd question: does anybody seam weld the 996 chassis for race use? On a previous race (rally) car, seam welding made a massive difference in chassis stiffness.
That's about all it is these days... dedicated track. The change in volume now that ALL of the carpeting and insulation is out was noticeable. I won't realize any change in feel until it goes back to the track... I have Sebring and VIR nearly back to back coming up shortly. I'd really like to get the door cards made prior - but it's about time and whether or not I can make over there (and if they have time).
I'll say this - the glue that's used to hold some of the insulation down is some messy crap. Spraying it with brake cleaner and hoping to shortcut the removal just made things worse. Lesson learned.
Last step on the interior really is to just get the doors made with RS cards. Then, as near as I can tell, the list kind of looks like this:
Fiberglass hood
Fiberglass roof / sunroof removal
Possibly full cage.
Lexan side windows / rear window
And the circle seems to be coming all the way around. The car has been listed for sale and Im actually considering parting it out....
I know what I paid for the motor (and what I paid for the last motor - which lacked some of the options this one has) but Im trying to get my head wrapped around that process and the time commitment to do it.
Im thinking that Id love to make a deal with someone on the car - but I just need to give myself a set timeframe for it to sell.
