Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
It was the unlock/locking mechanism within the door latch assembly itself that prevented me from opening the door.
Leading evidence: 'unlock/locking mechanism within the door latch assembly itself' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'unlock/locking mechanism within the door latch assembly itself' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check here' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

All of the linkages from the handle to the latch were in good condition and installed correctly.

It is a twenty year old piece of hardware that gets used every time you enter or exit the car.

I'm assuming this means a full replacement of the assembly, but figured I'd check here to see if anyone had any creative fixes that have lasted.

That being said, I am an expert in replacing door latch assemblies now.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had issues with the door lock assembly not recognizing the door being open so the window would pop back up when the door was open. I pulled the lock mechanism out expecting to find a broken plunger on the microswitch; the rubber boot was gone and the plunger was a little worn, but the bigger issue I noticed was that the cam that the microswitch rides on was chewed up. I'm assuming this means a full replacement of the assembly, but figured I'd check here to see if anyone had any creative fixes that have lasted. I don't want to take the door apart again any time soon. Thanks!
Someone here did a write up of the internals and that might provide the information you're looking for. The vast majority of people replace the whole latch. It is a twenty year old piece of hardware that gets used every time you enter or exit the car. Like they said in the old Vaudeville routine - Pay the two dollars.
Thanks wyovino. I went for the two dollar fix, and it looks like now I have to pay the two (hundred) dollars. I brought it up because I hadn't seen any content talking about the damaged cam, only the microswitch failures. Figured this might be a valuable data point for someone else on a Google mission. Just in case it is helpful for others, here are the bookmarks I amassed from my research:

You may want to try your luck with a used latch from
https://www.partssociety.com
or qualityporscheparts on eBay. They are the same company.
My experience has been great with them.
I gave this a try a while ago. The door lock mechanism failed within a few months and I was unable to open the door using either the interior or exterior door handle. I was pretty lucky to get the door open after pulling the handle ~ 50 times. All of the linkages from the handle to the latch were in good condition and installed correctly. It was the unlock/locking mechanism within the door latch assembly itself that prevented me from opening the door.
I will never buy a used part for something this critical again. That being said, I am an expert in replacing door latch assemblies now.
I got the latest revision latch, and its a very smooth mechanism. Just get a new OEM one.
That's a fair comment. Used parts do carry risks. I try to favor my odds by buying parts only from wrecked cars where the seller can provide pics of the car and the parts. In that way, I know the parts were likely still in working order when they were pulled. I would disassemble and examine the used parts carefully before the install but at the end of the day, there's still no guarantee.
BTW, the driver's side has been upgraded to 9A783701503 $200-ish now so not bad at all for a brand new part.
The passenger side is still 3B1837016P, $340-ish
VW and Audi used the same lock mechanism and you can buy an aftermarket replacement without the Porsche Tax.
