Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I finally found the right car at the right place at the right time. It's a 2003 991 C2 with 63k miles. Needs IMS/RMS (next year) for my peace of mind, but I am enjoying the hell out of the car now. It is great to drive. My previous performance car was a 2011 M3 Comp. Great car, but there is something special about a 911. It's not as fast probably as the M3, but I enjoy driving it sooo much more. I think I got a smokin' deal on it (15.5K) and it's a two owner California/Oregon/Washington car. No leaks or ticking at idle so far. Pulls hard and is punchy when I'm on the backroads in North Carolina. Love it. I was planning on getting a 991.2 TTS in couple of years, but I'm so happy and satisfied with this 911, that I'm considering either delaying that or even just forgetting about it. I have so much fun in this thing that I'm thinking do I really need 200HP + more? I guess I'll really make that decision in a couple of years. But that's how good I think the 996 is to me - it's got me reconsidering getting a 991.2!!!

Enjoy! Eventually, you'll lust after the additional horsepower.

POST 5Original post

Congrats on the new 911. My first 911 was a 2003 C2 in Midnight Blue Metallic. Great car and tons of fun. You will enjoy it!

POST 7Original post

Great looking 996. After driving my stock 03 4s for few months, and initially thinking I really need more Hp from a 991 or 996 turbo, I now realize I can have so much fun in the low Hp 996. More Hp would only get me in trouble.

POST 8Original post

Congrats! I picked up an 03 Midnight Blue Targa back in December. Couldn't be happier. Don't delay too much on the IMS/RMS. Also have the AOS checked out or replaced. This seems to be the hot topic these days. I keep moving up the horsepower chain myself. I thought the Targa was pretty fast compared to the VW R32 I was driving. After a few months, I would like some additional HP. Although the more I drive it, and learn the best power curve to drive in, its plenty fast to get you in trouble. I had picked this up as a stepping stone 911 with intentions of upgrading. I think I'll just drive this for a few years before I make that decision. The members here are a great resource. I was warned about the snobby Porsche forum folks. The opposite has been my experience. What a great group of helpful knowledgeable people. Kyle

Well, you ARE in the 996 forum... I agree. Now, pulling away from the stoplight, Im thinking is this it?. Horsepower or firepower, you ALWAYS want more. TC

POST 10Original post

Seems like a really good deal to me. You see cars with a lot more mileage in that price range.

POST 13Original post

Wow What a deal, that car could have pulled $24k Congrats, nice car

POST 14Original post

Congrats! Just bought a speed yellow 03 myself. Got to take it out for a 1200 mile drive over the past 4 days. What a blast. Had more miles at 99k but the IMS and oil separator together with other items were all done. Well maintained and solid. ENJOY! I have had BMW's for many years but this is a fun change of pace.

Out of curiosity if you don't mind me asking, what is the IMS/RMS service you're having done going to run you? Also could always purchase a supercharger kit for it if the need for more presents itself.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've gotten quotes for between 4.5k to 7.5k, for IMS/RMS and clutch/flywheel replacement. I've gotten quotes for the LN Engineering IMS solution. How much do superchargers cost for a 996? Although I think I want to stay stock for most the part.

I had a 2011 M3 that I had purchased new in 2010. I loved that car too, but since it was brand new, I never wanted to drive in the rain, if I had to park it for more than 20 minutes where I couldn't see it, etc. I never used launch control on it (it was DCT). Great car, but I'm enjoying the 996 much more. The manual is great, and it's just more fun.

I feel like I scored. The seller was asking 17.9, and I thought I was low balling at 15.5, but he accepted my offer straight away. I was pleasantly surprised. I sent him the full amount (probably should have been more cautious) and then went through the circus of trying to get it shipped from California to North Carolina. That was the only regrettable part of the whole thing.

Kyle, what exactly happens with the air/oil separator when it goes bad? How much should I expect to tack on price wise if I do when I do the IMS/RMS/clutch/maybe flywheel if needed?

Wow thats a pretty big price swing 4.5-7.5. Heres this kit https://www.vividracing.com/tpc-supe...4-p-14864.html expensive but I bet makes the 996 a lot of fun.

Here's my track car when AOS failed. You can also get hydrolock. Additional cost is low.

POST 23Original post

You win. Not black, sliver so -- bonus. Get some tools, a few jack stands, borrow a trans jack and do the IMS yourself. There's a metric ton of help here, and it's a great way to know your car. Can also do the RMS, AOS front trans mount, clutch, PP at the same time. Save that $6k for upgrades elsewhere. I'm gonna disagree with others. I think once you wind the engine out, there's plenty of HP for the chassis and brakes. Start messing with the M96, and it's quickly down the rabbit hole. It can be a very deep hole too. This isn't a M3, will never be one, and stop chasing that, it's over. Even if you do get more HP, there's always someone with more down the road.
