I used Amor All Extreme Tire Shine gel on mine two years ago and it still looks great.

Wow, I used some Mequires Ultimate Black on my gray (actually is black) cowl and it came out great.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello, how difficult DIY job to replace the plastic cowling below the windshield? On my 996 it has worn and faded to grey. About $150 on Pelican website, but no "how to" article. TYVM! /X3
Buy a bottle or two of solution finish and try that. I've restored some pretty nasty looking plastic with that stuff. It might need a coat or two but its cheaper than a replacement.
Before you buy a new trim piece:
I used "Wipe New" on all the black trim on my 2002. Works like a charm. They look black with a matte finish. For $20 give it a shot.
OP,
Check out this thread: 2002 996 Windshield Cowl Replacement on Rennlist 07-11-17. Hardest part is discoing the washer nozzle stuff. If you buy new, don’t forget to order the two cowl panel caps. Pretty easy and satisfying project!
I did mine with black plasti-dip when I first got my car (4 years ago) - it's just starting to look a little worn again, so I'll probably hit it again in the spring...
Try Sonax PLASTIC RESTORER GEL. I have used it for several years and keep coming back to it after trying the next great plastic treatment I read about.
This thread reminded me that a prior owner tried to clear coat -I think- the cowl on my AE and it is pealing up in places now. So I just went into the garage and hit it with the Sonax. Looks great. One would never know it was ever spayed.
I replaced my cowl last year - its pretty easy. The biggest advice is to be very careful with the wiper arms. I marked the position of each with painters tape before removal. That way, the arms will be perfectly aligned when you reinstall them. And dont let them snap on the windshield.
What color is the cowl to begin with? Mine is grey and doesn't look bad on a dark blue car. If it was black originally, I'll treat mine while the car is up for the winter.
Once you remove the wipers, it comes off easily. You can also remove the rubber strip and put it back on to refinish the plastic. I repainted mine with black semi-gloss plastic paint ~5yrs. ago, but its beginning to look like its time to do it again.
Yup, the Hawaiian sun does a number on plastic here.
Now I just need to fix the two end mounting points as the have cracked at the base. Thinking of gluing a water bottle cap in there to firm it all up. My cowl resembles a wild pair of eyebrows curling up at the ends!
I re-apply mine (Wipe New) every 12 months, but it doesn't really need it. It only takes 5 minutes to do all of the black trim on the car. I wash the car weekly from April-October. However, it is parked in a shady spot. Someone who has it parked in the sun in Arizona might have different results.
Funny thing, mine still looks dark grey/black, but the plastic is starting to crack where it's bolted to the car. Wow, I didn't know that Porsche $150 for this simple piece of plastic, but there again, this is Porsche we're talking about. I will need to replace it soon. Looks like you have to remove the front wipers?
My cowl fastening area on the driver's side was broken and loose. I ended up gluing a piece of plastic in the hole and drilled it for the fastener...a lot cheaper than $150. That repair may not last long what with the brittle plastic, but at least for now it's not flapping and trying to fly away! Anyway with the fastener cover on the ugly repair is unseen!
Its easy to replace:
- Remove wiper arms
- 2 x nuts on top, 1 x screw on top, 2 x screws behind the battery
- Disconnect washer fluid line
- Remove trim
Tips:
- replace rubber gasket which is a separate part
- Be careful when disconnecting the washer line - there is a very small screen/filter inside it
My rubber gasket won't stay on place. It doesn't look worn but I suspect perhaps it is shrinking and now will not follow the curve around. It pulls up like it's cutting the corner. See picture. If I order a new one how it is held in place? Are they just pinched into the slit or do they glue into place? Should I try to glue the existing one in?
Actually, come to think of it, if I glue it, I may ruin the trim/plastic piece.
Is the rubber gasket supposed to stay in place just by pressure? I'll put a new one on.
Yes just pressure and it locks into place in the groove of the plastic.
If you haven't removed it yet and you're trying to work it without removing the trim - you might actually get away with removing the trim and reseating the gasket into it.
My local dealer parts dept mgr just called me; he found it. The image files were less than complete he said, but he figured it out. It's P/N 996-572-931-00. I'll be buying it from him since he did the work to track it down. ;-)

That's hilarious, I never knew it was supposed to be black. Mine is faded to charcoal gray and I just assumed that was what it's supposed to look like. Doesn't look half bad on a silver car.
Anybody know what's different from early to later cars? Curious why the part up to 2000 is <$100, and the one for 2001 and later is >$150.
I finally got around to installing my new cowl gasket today. Great write up is located here:

Unless the sun smooths things out, and it may since my gasket was in a small round bag when I bought it, it's not laying flat. If it stays this way, I may just splurge for a new cowl since I'm really feeling the love for the 996 lately.
